Chapter 26 ~ The Final Battle
I felt someone pick me up after Harry and I were pronounced dead to Voldemort and the other Death Eaters. Our eyes were closed, so we had no idea where we were at. I wanted to open my eyes, but I knew that was a bad idea. I wasn't even sure what was going on right now. Were we going back to Hogwarts? Was Voldemort going to show everyone that we were dead? Well, we weren't really dead, but no one else knew that, except for Narcissa.
I moved my hand and immediately felt Harry's sweaty hand in mine. We were hanging over Hagrid's shoulders, rocking back and forth.
I was worried about how everyone would react once they saw us and thought we were dead. How would Hermione react? The Weasleys? Draco? Professors? Students?
"Harry and Maxine Potter are dead!" Voldemort announced.
"No! No!" Ginny shouted.
"Silence!" Voldemort shouted back. "Stupid girl. Harry and Maxine Potter are dead. From this day forth, you put your faith in me." He paused. "The Potters are dead!" The Death Eaters laughed at that, thinking it was funny. "Now is the time to declare yourself," Voldemort continued. "Come forward and join us. Or die."
There was a moment of silence.
Suddenly, I heard someone say, "Draco." It was Lucius Malfoy. "Draco."
"Draco," his mother spoke up. "Draco, come."
After another moment of silence, Voldemort spoke up. "Ah, well done, Draco. Well done."
I knew that he only joined his side for Narcissa's sake. She loved him so much and couldn't bear the thought of seeing him get hurt.
"Well, I must say that I had hoped for better," Voldemort said, making his Death Eaters laugh again. "And who might you be, young man?"
I was kind of surprised when I heard the words, "Neville Longbottom."
The Death Eaters roared with laughter once again.
"Well, Neville, I'm sure we can find a place for you in our ranks," Voldemort replied.
"I'd like to say something," Neville said really fast.
There was a pause, then Voldemort went on. "I'm sure we'd all be fascinated to hear what you have to say."
It was quiet for a moment. Then, Neville spoke up. "It doesn't matter that Harry and Max are gone."
"Stand down, Neville," Seamus told him.
"People die every day!" Neville shouted. "Friends, family...they all die. Yeah, we lost Harry and Max. But they're still with us. They're in our hearts. So is Fred, Remus, Tonks, all of them. They didn't die in vain." Neville paused for a moment, then continued. "But you will! Because you're wrong! Harry and Max's hearts did beat for us! For all of us! This is not over!"
That was when I opened my eyes a little bit and looked over at Harry. "Now?" I asked him in a whisper.
He did the same and nodded his head. "Now."
With that, we rolled off of Hagrid, which shocked many people. We took our wands out and looked at Nagini, shouting, "Confringo!" After that, Harry and I jumped over some bricks and ran over to Ron and Hermione.
"Max and I will lure him into the castle! We have to kill the snake!" Harry shouted at them.
"Here, you'll need this!" Hermione shouted back, handing Harry a Basilisk fang.
I looked back to see a shocked Draco. He gave me a small smile, which I returned the favor.
Finish this, he mouthed.
I nodded. I gave him one last loving look before Harry and I took off running inside the castle. We ran until we couldn't run any longer. No one was in sight.
"What do we do now? Wait for him to show up?" I questioned. "Because if that's the plan, it's not a very good one."
Crack!
"He's here," Harry whispered.
We stood in silence and waited patiently for the next move. I had a feeling that we were about to get caught. That was the last thing I wanted to happen, especially since we had no plan to finish him off. We had to wait until Nagini was dead to even kill Voldemort since Nagini was the last Horcrux that had to be destroyed.
It was now or never.
"Harry, we have to fight him," I whispered.
"But the snake--"
"We're fighters, Harry," I told him. "We can fight him until the snake is killed. Then, we finish him off once and for all."
Harry looked down at the ground, then back up at me. "You ready?"
I nodded my head in response. "Ready as I'll ever be."
After that was said, we ran out and showed ourselves to Voldemort. Voldemort kept shooting the Killing Curse at us and we kept on blocking it. After we blocked the spell for the hundredth time, he was gone.
"Where did he go?" Harry asked.
Crack!
We turned around and found him behind us. While he shot the Killing Curse at us again, we shot a spell at him, which ended up forming a collision between us three. I turned around and saw that Nagini was behind us.
"Harry, shoot up at the ceiling!" I said to him.
We shot our collided spells up at the ceiling, causing it to collapse in the middle of us. Harry threw me the fang. Just as I was about to stab the snake...
"Max, behind you!" he yelled.
I turned around and saw Voldemort standing there. I ran and jumped over the railing of the stairs just before I could get hit with Voldemort's spell. I dropped the fang as I fell down and hit another set of stairs. I saw that Harry jumped with me as well and fell down beside me. Just as I was about to go grab the fang, Voldemort destroyed it.
"Let's get out of here!" Harry screamed at me, standing up and pulling me up with him.
We took off running and didn't look back. I wasn't sure where we were at, but we stopped running when we got to a bridge that came from all four directions and met in the middle. All of a sudden, he appeared behind us. Voldemort shot another spell at us, causing the bridge that we were on to fall. We crawled on the ground, trying to get away from him.
Before I knew it, I felt something tight go around my neck. I was gagging, needing to breathe. Soon, Harry was doing the same thing. We were floating back up so that Voldemort could see us. Once we were visible to him, he dropped us to the ground.
I leaned back against the wall as Harry was still on the ground. Voldemort kicked him, then came over to me and slapped me across the face. I fell to the ground, making me remember when Lucius used to do the same thing to me.
"You were right," Harry said to him. "You were right when you told Snape that the wand was failing you. It will always fail you!"
Voldemort turned his attention to my brother and went after him. "I killed Snape!" he shouted.
"But what if the wand never belonged to Snape?" I questioned from behind him. "What if its allegiance was always to someone else?"
"Come on, Tom. Let's finish this the way we started it," Harry said, standing at the edge of a cliff.
I stood up as Harry placed his arms around Voldemort's neck. I ran and hung onto Voldemort as we jumped off the cliff. "Together!" Harry and I yelled.
And just like that, we were falling. Before we reached the ground, we began Apparating. There wasn't a specific spot that we landed at. Actually, we didn't land at all for a while. We just stayed in the air, flying around the castle. We finally landed in the exact spot we started when Voldemort told everyone that we were dead. I looked up from the ground and saw that my wand was a few feet in front of me. When I saw Voldemort and Harry crawling for their wands, I did the same.
Once we got our wands, the three of us stood up and stared at each other for a brief moment. Then, just like before, our wands collided. It was just like fourth year all over again, but it was just us this time. There were no Death Eaters around, the Muggle caretaker wasn't here, Cedric wasn't here either, and neither were our parents. They weren't telling us what to do at this moment. We had to figure it out for ourselves.
All of a sudden, Voldemort broke the collision. He tugged at his chest.
"What happened?" Harry asked.
"I think the snake's been killed," I answered. "All the Horcruxes have been destroyed."
"We can end him," Harry said.
I nodded my head. "Let's kill this bastard once and for all."
We looked at Voldemort and collided with our wands for the last time. We did everything to not break it. We fought for everyone that had died in this war. We fought for everyone that lost themselves in this war. We fought for the entire Wizarding world.
Suddenly, Voldemort was losing. As we disarmed him, the wand flew over to us. It landed right between us. Harry and I caught it with our hands and held it between the two of us.
We looked over at Voldemort and watched as he slowly turned into ashes and floated up in the sky.
Once he was gone for good, Harry and I looked at each other and laughed.
"We won," Harry said, a small smile coming up on his face.
"We won!" I repeated with joy.
I let go of the wand and hugged Harry. He hugged me back. After a brief moment, we pulled away from each other and looked down at the Elder Wand that was in Harry's hand.
"So I guess we both own the wand," he said.
"I didn't even think that was possible," I told him.
"Well, I didn't think it was possible that we could both disarm him at the same time," he pointed out.
"We're nothing but trouble," I said, laughing.
"More like double trouble," he replied, laughing with me.
I smiled at him and he smiled back, knowing that what he just said was absolutely true.
