Chapter 24 ~ Last Minute Confessions

I sat down in Dumbledore's office, staring at my brother, who had a sad look on his face just like me.

It was all coming together now and it took almost eighteen years to finally figure it out. Snape wasn't a bad guy. He was a good guy the entire time. Voldemort failed to kill us as a baby because of our mother. So now, a piece of Voldemort's soul split into two and they lived inside Harry and I. There was only one more thing to do now. I always knew the truth was a hard thing to tell someone. But this was way worse than anyone could imagine. Harry and I, The-Twins-Who-Lived, were about to do the unthinkable.

"Max, we have to die," Harry told me. "We have to turn ourselves in."

I nodded in agreement. "I know. It's the only way, right? Too many people have died for us already."

"I just can't believe a part of him has been inside of us this entire time and took us this long to figure it out."

I sighed and looked down at the floor, waving my hand across the cold surface. "I can't leave him. I can't leave Draco," I whispered to my brother.

"I know you don't want to," Harry replied, wrapping his arm over my shoulder. "But we have to. It's the only way to finally defeat him once and for all."

We sat there for another minute until we finally decided it was time to go face our fate. We went to go look for Ron and Hermione once we left the office. We found them sitting on the steps while holding hands and whispering to each other. They turned around when they heard us coming down the stairs. The two stood up and gave us a worried look.

"Where have you two been?" Hermione asked us.

"We thought you two went to the forest already," Ron said.

"We're going there now," I told them, walking past them, followed by Harry.

"Are you two mad? Don't go!" Ron protested. "You two can't give yourselves up to him!"

We stopped walking.

"What is it?" Hermione questioned. "What do you two know?"

We turned around, facing our best friends.

"There's a reason why we can hear the Horcruxes," Harry explained. "I think I've known for a while. I've kept it to myself, just so I could be sure..."

"What is it?" Hermione asked, tears forming in her eyes.

"Hermione, I think you've known for a while, too," he said.

Now she was crying, and that made me cry as well. "I'll go with you two!" she cried.

I shook my head. "No, Hermione. We want you to kill the snake. Kill the snake and then it's just him."

Hermione went to Harry and pulled him in for a hug. While she was crying on his shoulder, I went up to Ron.

"You and Hermione are lucky that I haven't told Harry about you two yet," I said, making us both laugh.

"How the bloody hell can you make a joke at a time like this?" he said, wiping tears from his eyes.

I began to cry, too. I pulled Ron in for a hug. "I'm glad you're one of my best friends."

He pulled away, nodding his head in agreement. "Me, too."

We smiled at each other. Then I turned to Hermione, who was crying her eyes out.

"Oh, Hermione..." I stated, pulling her in for a hug as well.

"I can't believe you two are doing this," she said after she pulled away, sniffling and wiping her eyes.

"It'll be okay, Hermione. We promise," I told her.

"Thanks for being my best friend," she replied.

I smiled at her and gave her one last hug and Ron a sad smile before following Harry down the steps. Neither of us wanted to die, but we had to do this for the entire Wizarding world. We couldn't let Voldemort win.

"Are you nervous?" Harry asked me.

"A little," I replied. "What about you?"

He nodded his head. "Same."

"Max?"

We stopped walking and turned around to see who called my name. I gasped when I saw that it was Draco. I ran back up the steps and threw my arms around him. I pulled away after a brief moment, gazing into his eyes.

"Are you going to the forest?" he asked, tears welling up in his eyes.

I nodded my head in response. "Yeah, I am."

He shook his head, tears falling down his face. "No. Don't do it, Max."

"I have to. Harry and I have to do this," I told him. "Listen, Draco. I...I need to tell you something. I've been meaning to tell you this ever since I got here and now this is my last chance because I don't know if I'll have another one." I was beginning to cry again. "I love you," I added in a whisper.

Draco stared at me for a moment before pressing his lips onto mine. We were slowly kissing each other until he pulled away, his face inches away from mine. "I love you, too," he whispered back. "I've always loved you, Max Potter."

I smiled at him. "And I'll always love you, Draco Malfoy." I paused, sniffling. "Everything will be okay. I promise."

He smiled back. "You better go now."

I nodded. "No matter what happens, I'll always be with you." With that, I gave him one last peck on the lips and walked away from Draco, his touch still lingering on me. I felt him watch me as Harry and I walked out of the castle.

We were quiet while walking inside the Forbidden Forest. What was there to say? We were about to be killed by Lord Voldemort himself. I didn't want to say anything else that would make me cry. All of this was just too much for me.

"I'm glad that I told Draco that I loved him before we left the castle to come here," I told Harry, breaking the silence.

"I'm happy that he loves you back," he replied. "I would've hexed him if he had broken your heart."

I chuckled, shoving my brother in a playful way. "Well, you don't have to do that."

He chuckled, too, smiling at me. Then, we went back to walking quietly.

I was wondering what was going through Harry's mind as we continued walking. It was obvious that he didn't want to do this either. He never said goodbye to Ginny. I knew that he loved her just as much as I loved Draco and he didn't get the chance to tell her like I did with Draco. He wasn't going to admit his love for Ginny, but I still knew that he loved her.

All of a sudden, Harry stopped walking.

"What is it, Harry?" I asked, stopping beside him.

He reached into his pocket and took out the Snitch.

"Are you ready to die, Max?" he asked me.

Reluctantly, I nodded my head. "Yes, I am."

He nodded his head, too. "So am I. I'm ready to die."

"I'm ready to die," I repeated.

We looked at each other and said, "We're ready to die."

Harry pressed the Snitch to his lips like he did back in December. It opened up and a stone floated in front of us.

"The Resurrection Stone," I muttered.

Harry grabbed it and closed it in his hand. I placed my hand over his and closed my eyes, along with Harry. We had them closed for a brief moment. When we opened them back up, I gasped.

"Mum. Dad," we whispered.

Tears were forming in my eyes as I went up to my mother and reached out for her hand, but I couldn't grab it. Sirius and Lupin were also here as well.

"You two have been so brave," Mum said.

"Why are you guys here?" Harry asked.

"We never left," Mum replied.

I turned to Sirius. "Does it hurt? Dying?" I questioned.

"Quicker than falling asleep," he answered.

"You two are nearly there," Dad spoke up.

I sniffled. "We're sorry."

"We never wanted any of you to die for us," Harry added. "And, Lupin, your son..."

"Others will tell him what his mother and father died for. One day, he'll understand," Lupin told us.

We looked at everyone one last time.

"You'll stay with us?" I asked.

"Until the end," Dad said, nodding his head.

"And he won't be able to see you?" Harry added.

"No," Sirius replied. "We're here," he added, pointing at our chests.

"The ones that love us never really leave us," I repeated what Sirius told us back in third year.

Sirius gave me a sad smile.

"Stay close to us," Harry told them.

"Always," Mum said.

With that, Harry dropped the Resurrection Stone from his hand and we continued walking. Like before, we didn't say a word after our parents, Sirius, and Lupin were no longer visible.

"Max, wait," Harry said, stopping again, looking down at the ground.

"Why?" I asked. "What's the matter, Harry?"

He looked up and had tears streaming down his face. "I just wanted to let you know how much you mean to me, Max. I'm glad that you're my twin sister. I know that we've had some arguments in the past, but we always got over them. I wouldn't want anyone else to be my twin but you."

"Oh, Harry..." I began to say, crying as well.

"You're my best friend, Max," he said. "You'll always be my best friend. I love you."

"I love you, too." I pulled him in for a tight hug.

Both of us were crying our eyes out. We were about to die together. I never imagined this happening, but it was at this very moment.

We wiped our eyes as we pulled away from the hug.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Harry said, chuckling a little. "We're going to die."

I smiled sadly at him, taking his hand. "We're going to die together."

Harry nodded his head. "Let's get going, then."

We began to walk again. We weren't that far from where Voldemort was waiting for us. Before we knew it, Voldemort was in sight. We walked down the hill and stopped walking once we got down the hill. We waited for Voldemort to turn around and face us. When he did, we stared at him.

"Harry? Max? No! What are yeh two doin' 'ere?!" Hagrid shouted. He was tied up by some Death Eaters.

"Quiet!" a Death Eater hissed at him.

The three of us just stood there, staring each other down. That was until Voldemort spoke up.

"Harry and Maxine Potter...The-Twins-Who-Lived...come to die." Voldemort lifted up his wand and pointed it at me.

Harry took a deep breath. "Be brave, Max," he whispered.

"Ladies first," he said.

I squeezed Harry's hand one last time before letting it go and stepping forward.

This was it. I had been brave for this long, and I knew that I still had to be brave at this very moment. I had to die with Harry. I had to die in order to defeat Voldemort once and for all. I was terrified, but I was placed in Gryffindor for a reason, and not just because I asked the Sorting Hat to put me in there and not in Slytherin. I had shown courage over the years, just like Draco said. I couldn't let Voldemort know that I was scared right now. I was brave. Harry was brave. We were both brave.

Because we were the Potters. We were The-Twins-Who-Lived.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. "Quicker than falling asleep...quicker than falling asleep..." I kept whispering to myself over and over, ready for Voldemort to hit me with the curse.

"Avada Kedavra!"
