( ★ ) Cousins, Massachusetts was the town that hundreds of people traveled to every year. It was right on the beach and allowed those in the area to still enjoy the sand and water while not having to travel hundreds of thousands of miles. The town was best known for its debutante ball every year, with girls and boys dressing up to show their elegance and maturity. The ball was normally organized by the country club with a board of members helping as well, some of them being Susannah Fisher, Jennifer Bardot, and Brittany Wright.

The town was also known for those that lived there and the houses they had along the beach. While hundreds of people actually lived in cousins year round, hundreds of people had summer houses there. The Bardot family was one of those families, along with the fisher family. Susannah and Jennifer had grown up together, along with their friend, Laurel. Along the way, they found more friends and eventually had kids that all became friends. It was the perfect story they wanted. Although, nothing was perfect in their friend group or their kids friend group.

That summer would be one of the last, if not the last, summers where everyone was together. It was either everyone was going off to college or they just didn't have time those following summers, and while it pains them, they were prepared to make that summer the best summer they've ever had. If only things ever went according to plan when it came to cousins.

( ★ ) Autumn Bardot always enjoyed the summers at cousins. From the minute she was born, she had been brought to the summer house every year and even sometimes during the winter and fall. Although, something would get ruined every year. It was normally her dad showing up that ruined it but she wouldn't admit that out loud. For years, her dad had been ruining things for her, her siblings, and her mom. It started out as emotional and mental abuse, using words to drag his family down. By the time autumn was six, she had been slapped across the face for just playing too loudly. By the time she was nine, she was sobbing herself to sleep as she heard the screams of her mom downstairs. She could still hear the words when she closed her eyes.

For years, autumn tried to forget that her dad was that way. Every time he would raise his voice, she could apologize and wait for his approval before leaving. Every time he would hit one of her siblings, she would stay silent by the staircase. If she interrupted, she would be down on the ground with them. Call her selfish, but she didn't feel like being beaten to a pulp. By her fifteenth birthday, her mom was filing for divorce and getting them away from the abuse. Her friends in cousins had zero idea of what was happening. Well that she knew of. Autumn always thought that Conrad knew, from the way he would look at them whenever arguing was going on somewhere in the beach houses. Autumn always wished that belly would be the one to figure it out, but she was glad that Conrad was the one that did.

After the car accident the year before, autumn forced cousins into the back of her head. She didn't want to remember the look on her moms face as she got the call that there had been an accident. She didn't want to remember the look aunt Susannah had on her face when she got the call too. She didn't want to remember the betrayal Belly had in her eyes when she ran outside to find the Bardot car driving away from the beach house. She didn't want to remember the pain she caused to the one person that gave her good love.

( ★ ) Belly Conklin was the definition of a sunshine girl. She brought happiness and warmth wherever she went, just by her smile and high energy. Although, it was all an act. While the girl was a happy sunshine girl, she wasn't always happy like she acted. Her family and friends saw her as this girl that had everything perfectly laid out for her and didn't let anything affect her. But belly was the complete opposite of that.

In reality, the girl had spent most of her childhood thinking that she wasn't worth it because no one liked her in the way she wanted. She had friends but she wanted something more than that and no one wanted that with her. They wanted it with her friends instead. It truly messed with belly as she got older, she was so insecure of herself and it was used against her whenever people had a chance. The only people that didn't comment on her insecurities were her friends and family in the beach house. The only one that she cared about though was autumn bardot. But that all got ruined when autumn left without saying good bye that summer.

Belly knew she wouldn't hold a grudge once she actually saw autumn but it didn't hide the fact that she felt nothing but pain when she saw the car drive out of the driveway the previous summer. It didn't hide the fact that the one person belly loved had left her and she didn't know if their good love would ever be the same again.

( ★ ) Autumn and belly had loved each other deep down from the moment they met when they were babies. Obviously they didn't know what they meant at the time but autumn knew the minute she found out about the word that she loved belly and always would. No matter how much the two girls hurt each other, they always stayed together and didn't let anything hurt their friendship. Eventually, by their fifteenth birthday, the two girls had an idea of what they wanted with each other. But they were too scared to ruin their friendship, making them stay silent.

That was until belly couldn't wait anymore. She couldn't let autumn go after everything they went through. So she kissed autumn and showed her what it was like to have a good love and how this love would be a good one.
