A bullet for my Valentine

(Fays POV)

"Uncle Stan," Amber hissed, "move out the way and you," she pointed her gun at Luis, "you, step away from him."

Luis didn't move right away. His eyes landed on Austen, who nodded. Slowly, Luis took several steps away from Stan, who unfortunatly, was still holding his gun.

"Why are you doing this?" Jason asked her, "what do you get out of this?"

Amber grinned. "That's such a stupid question. Obvious and stupid but I'll tell you why since you're not going to live much longer. It's the least I could do."

That bitch actually giggled. Giggled! Mental institution anyone?

"I've always been watching you," she began, smiling ever so sweetly at Austen. "Even before you returned totally hot, my eyes never left you. I noticed how you always followed Fay, who hasn't? Who couldn't? You were so in love with her no one could miss the adoration in your eyes."

Amber glared at me. "Only Fay had been stupid enough to not notice. The more I watched Austen watch over her with such gentleness, patience and so much love that I wanted to puke. But suddenly, I found myself yearning for the same thing. I wanted someone to love me like that. With that intensity.

"It just wasn't fair, you know?" She looked at everyone, willing them to understand her point of view. "It wasn't fair that a girl like Fay, rough and totally unfeminine could have someone like Austen who adored the ground she walked on, and she didn't even notice it.

"The more I saw him suffer because of her blindness and insensitivity, the more I became angry. Soon I couldn't help but like poor Austen, couldn't help but fall for him."

Amber's eyes moistened, glancing at Austen. "I found myself watching you and the more I watched, the more I learned that there was more to you then the "weak puppy" Austen that everyone knew. You were a man, more than a man than anyother of those guys. I could see it."

"So what?" Luis interupted, "you decided to knock Fay out of the way?"

Amber turned her attention to him, but she wasn't stupid enough to let her guard down. The gun she held never wavered. "Well, not at first. I admit I hated her guts but I never once thought of killing her. That is until Austen came back from summer break. I was at the club that night, when Austen sang. No one else knew but I did. I knew I was looking at Austen. He was different, more masculine, beautiful and utterly male but he was still Austen. Then he came to school looking like some hobo reject. It didn't take me much to realize that Fay must have made him come to school like that."

Amber turned her angry eyes at me, hand tightening on the gun. "You humiliated him because you didn't want anyone to see his change. Didn't want to share him. You were mean, spiteful and a selfish bitch. I knew you didn't deserve Austen. You never did."

"Don't," Austen said softly, "relax your hold on the trigger, Amber."

Amber stiffened visibly than her face crumpled with pain. "See? Even now you're trying to protect her. Even though she put you through so much. You're too soft on her, I knew that, that's why Fay had to go. Disappear from your life so you can have someone who would love you. Cherish you."

"And I suppose you were fit for the job," I said dryly. My friends shot me warning looks, telling me to keep my mouth shut before the psycho chick blows my brains out. Ok, right-O.

"That's right," Amber lifted her chin up, "there was no one who loved him more than I. No one who knew him more. Accepted him. Unlike you. You practically abused him emotionally. When you suddenly stopped talking to him and he began to avoid you I knew something was up. So when you approached him that day after school I followed you two and heard everything. He confessed to you yet you crushed his love like a bug. Poor Austen. But by than I already had my plans in motion.

"You see I found out that my Uncle over there had this obsession with you." Ambers smile turned cold as winter. "And I confronted him about it."

"So you used your uncles feelings for Fay to help kill her?" Jason guessed. "But he didn't know of that part of the plan." Jason glanced at Stan. "Did he?"

Amber snorted. "No, he didn't because at first killing her wasn't the plan. The plan was for him to take her, by force if neccissary and disappear with her but noooo, my uncle wanted to woo her by sending her stupid love notes so I let him believe that."

She giggled again, that creepy giggle that reminded me of the Joker. "By the way, Fay, did you like your present? Wasn't it a cute little kitty cat?"

All the blood rushed out of my face. I'm sure I turned pale. "You? You left that note? And...that cat..."

"The note was from him," Amber rolled her eyes at Stan. "Originally it was a rose but I decided to replace it with something that would leave more of an...." she laughed, "impact."

"Crazy bitch," I growled, taking a step forward.

Amber pointed the gun at my heart. "Uh uh uh, do you want to speed up your death?"

"So," Luis said, drawing Ambers attention, "your plan didn't work then what? You decided that its better to kill her?"

Ambers eyed glittered. "Yes, but I didn't count on you guys figuring out where we took her and I certainly didn't calculate Angela being involved. I thought she hated Fay almost as much as I did. Oh well, some plans are not flawless. I just have to make some adjustments. Thats all."

"That's all?" I snapped. "Taking human lives, could you really live through the guilt? Walk away just like that?"

"Yes," Amber smiled, the smile of a person who was beyond insane. "Yes, I belive I could. But don't worry Fay, I'll kill you first, straight through the heart. Quick and painless, right? Then I'll deal with your friends. Austen...Austen I'll save."

"I can't let you do that, Amber," Austen reached out a hand. "Give me the gun. You're a sweet girl, you don't really want to do this."

"But I have to," Amber backed away. "It's the only way to free you from her."

"Amber," Austen whispered softly. "I love her."

"Stop!" She screamed suddenly. "Don't you dare! Don't you dare say it."

"I love her," Austen continued. "And if you kill her, I'll never forgive you."

"But I'm doing this for you, Aussie," Amber whined, "I'm doing all this for you."

I almost rolled my eyes. God she sounded just like Stan. Now these were some relatives with relationship issues.

Amber swung her gun at me and everyone tensed. That crazed look Stan had was in her eyes. "I'll kill her."

Austen took a step forward and she swung her gun to his direction. "Don't do it, Amber. If you kill her, I swear there will be nothing in this world that could stop me from taking revenge."

Amber froze, eyes wide. "You...what are you saying, Aussie?"

"I'm saying that if you go through with this and hurt her in anyway," Austen's eyes darkened, any trace of the sweet adorable Austen that I was so fond of was gone, replaced by a more ruthless Austen, ruthless and merciless. "I'll kill you."

I shivered. The deadly tone of his voice...I believed him. Dear god, I believed that he'd do it. That he'd kill her. I suddenly felt desperate to get away. Not for my sake but for his. If I got killed and he killed her for revenge...I couldn't bear the thought.

"Why!" Amber cried, "why, why, why!! Can't you see that she's not worth it! With me you'd be happy!"

"If it isn't, Vals," Austen said, "then no one else matters."

"Shut up!" Amber screamed. "Just shut up!"

"Amber," Jason took a step forward, "calm down. Don't do anything that you'd regret."

"Back off! Back the fuck off!" Amber shouted. "I'll kill all of you!"

Shit, she was going to erupt. If we didn't do something soon and fast, someone will die.

"Kill them," Amber turned her crazed eyes at Stan. "Kill them all! Fay will never love you, you know that now so why let Austen have her if you can't? Why is he better than you? Kill them! Shoot her now!"

Something must have snapped in Stan, I could almost hear what kept him a little sane pop. He turned to me, raising the gun he held and pointed it to my heart.

Everything happened so fast that it felt like it happened under one second. In the corner of my eyes, I saw Austen move, charging at Stan with full speed and rage in his eyes.

"Austen no!" I found myself screaming when Stan realized that Austen was coming for him and swung the gun at his direction. And at that exact moment, Amber pointed her own gun at me and pulled the trigger.

Two gun shots went off.

A scream echoed in the tunnel.
