Chapter 13: Infant?

I felt a light weight upon my arms. Whatever I held, was small in size. I could not make out what the object was, and curiosity was prying at me.

When the world came to, I noticed that I held a rather small infant. Tears pricked at the corners of it's baby blue eyes. Quite loudly, the child sobbed. Obviously, my instinct must've been to shush the child, rocking it in my arms. While this occurred, it had just hit me.

This infant, is the only being I hath met within a dream, in which I could make out all of it's features. From the sparkle in it's large blue eyes, to the light blonde strands of hair, that laid atop it's skull... Wait...I question the thought...whose child is this? I recognize it not, like most things... Has this familiar glint in it's eyes, though.

"Well lookie who I found down here," a distorted, feminine voice giggled from the side of me. Turning my head ever so slightly, I met eyes with a small woman, whose appearance was blurred out, as per usual.

"M'lady, a word," I sighed softly, returning my gaze back to the child, who had fallen to sleep. "I'm sorry I did not inform you, of my arrival. But, I have some news..," I sighed once again, strangely being able to feel a tear, which formed in the corner of my eye. "...about Levin's origins..."

Wait, "Levin"? Levin...being the first name I hath been able to hear in one of these acclaimed dreams... Odd... Why is that?

"Oh no..," she muttered under her breath, as she took careful steps towards me. Her hand rested against the infant's forehead, as a small sigh escaped her lips. If I were able to see her expressions, I could only imagine the amount of pain she'd show... For, what I gathered from the situation at hand...this infant could be hers...

"Yes...it seems a mother somewhere in the South region, past the ocean, has reported her baby boy missing. The reports came in just this morning...seeing as it's so far South, they didn't reach us in time. But...I mean, I want to see Levin home safely, that is for sure," oh, perhaps I was wrong. Maybe he is not her child... "But, I don't trust it, ------, so...what I want to ask of you is... Will you go and investigate it? I don't want to send Levin on a trip across sea, only to find out it's not the same child she's missing. He could get hurt, or worse! So I want to ask you, -------, will you go and make sure this is her baby? I'll send you with a crystal that contains his image, so you can assure her he's safe if he is here. Just...I need to make sure. Will you do this?"

The woman stood still for a moment, contemplating her options, presumably. Her hands shook lightly, as she gently rubbed her blurred thumb across the baby's cheek. She gave a small nod, almost whispering, "of course..."

Even though I knew of no context of the situation at hand, I could feel my own heart breaking. The woman stood in silence, staring sadly at the child I held- Levin. I wish I remembered more than just this. I wish I could sympathize with what she's going through, like the me from the past most likely did...

"Thank you. I know you of all people have the most on the line here. I will take absolute care of Levin while you are gone...just...prepare yourself. I have never been to the South, and goodness knows what's out there."

"Right..."

Once again, she nodded. And this time, I was able to hear faint sobs. Her head dropped, as she made her way back out of, what appeared to be a nursery. I looked at the infant, still in my arms. His eyes had reopened, as he began to sob once more. Louder than before. As I frantically search for a way to shush him, the scene began to fade away, returning to reality...

~~~
"Garroth~! Garroth! You okay?"
I snapped to, looking around my surroundings. The sounds of a child's cries echoing throughout my ears. Lady Aphmau held my shoulders, as she looked up at I, with such worry in her eyes.
"Huh..? Pardon? What happened?" I frantically looked around, my eyes catching a woman, attempting to shush her screaming infant... That must've been what triggered that memory.
"You spaced for a minute there when I was talking to you," Lady Aphmau let go of my shoulders, moving her hands on her hips. "Are you alright?"
"Uh, yes, yes, m'lady. Apologies," I rubbed the back of my head, thanking Irene that I didn't pass out, and hit my head off of the nearest shelf. "What t'were we partaking in, 'gain?"
"We were looking for Laurance, so I could kick his butt, for being a little jerk to you, hun," Miss Aphmau gave a soft smile, taking my hand in hers. She began pulling me down the aisle. "What were you guys looking for in the first place, again?"
"Um...bread, I believe. Though, my memory's gone sort of hazy 'gain," that was a partial lie.
I remember the specific instruction of being asked to retrieve bread from the local marketplace. Though, due to blacking out so oft, I cannot seem to put what was my imagination, or what was reality. Everything blends together oddly.
"I see... Well, we'll check there anyway. C'mon, follow me..."
Not like I hath much of a choice in the matter.
Miss Aphmau led me down various aisles, keeping alert of her surroundings. Eventually, we made it to a hall, with shelves of bread. Presumably, this was the correct place to be. And, sure enough, Laurance stood at the other end of this hall, hands resting in his sweatshirt.
"There he is," Lady Aphmau huffed, storming over to him. Reluctantly, I followed behind. Truth be told, I was honestly sort of glad to be away from this man. He is nothing, but a...a knave. Yes, that being the best word to describe his malicious behaviour towards I.
"Well, lookie who I found down here," Aphmau chuckled, earning Laurance's attention.
Wait...that phrase sounds familiar... I feel as though I've heard it somewhere before...
"Ah, if it ain't, the beautiful Aph," Laurance smirked, looking down at Aphmau. He glanced over at I, shooting a glare with thou piercing blue eyes. "And, Sir Gareth. Damn it. I thought I lost you for good. Had my hopes up, you would've stuck onto someone else, and been a pain in their ass, instead of mine."
"Quiet, you miscreant. I am not fond of meeting 'gain with thou, either. But, unfortunately, I am stuck with thou, until I can find a way back to wherever the Hell my home is...unfortunately."
"Wait, hold up, what the Hell did you just call me?" His eyes shifted between Miss Aphmau and I.
"A miscreant. Proper term, for one such as vile as thou," I spat back at him.
"You are such a fucking dork," his laughs grew louder, as he pulled a bag of bread from the shelves, carelessly tossing it in his basket. "Anyways, I got what I was sent here for. Let's return back to Dante, so I can complete this quest, and cash in my reward."
"Pardon..?"
"Oh? What? Am I not playing Skyrim?" Laurance rolled his eyes, shoving past me.
I looked over at Miss Aphmau, who was shaking her head, with thou arms crossed over her chest. "I don't know what's gotten into him, lately...he's been acting so off..."
"This is not his normal personality?"
"No... I guess it was just...the aftereffects, of what...happened," Lady Aphmau pushed a strand of hair, which previously rested in front of her eyes.
"What 'happened'?" I questioned, quite curious for what caused this behaviour to arise in Laurance. Perhaps then, I could find a way to reverse it...so I wasn't hated so much.
"Maybe you should ask him about it," she gave a tiny smile, patting my arm. "C'mon, let's go catch you up with him, so he doesn't try and ditch you, again..."
"Right..."
Perhaps I shall ask thou 'bout it...
After dining with the generous one, the white-haired one, and the knave, I stepped outside. I rubbed my eyes, my tiredness catching up with me. I took a seat on the grass, staring up at the night sky. How good it must feel, to be able to recall at the least, most of your past. Instead of being restricted, to dwelling in the present.
The present, full of individuals who are merciless. A world, in which, their only interests are in their selves, and the ones closest to whomever it 'tis. Aside from a few, thou art the exception. Still...
"What are you doing out here, Weirdo?"
"Hey," was all I answered with, leaning back slightly, keeping my gaze, focused on the bright lights, that overwhelmed the darkening sky.
"That's your answer to my question, Blondie? 'Hey'?"
I nodded, putting on a smile. Positivity can solve most problems, can it not? And, Laurance, is the most obnoxious problem of all. "Hey."
"Hey?"
"Hey."
"I'm getting sick of you, already."
"I thought you already were?"
"Yeah, well now I'm even more sick?"
"How bad is 't?"
"Vomit-inducing."
"Distasteful."
"I know you are."
I shrugged his obvious taunts off, not allowing them to get to me, this time. I stared out at the field of grass, and the collection of florals, in which littered the area. Most were white flowers, for those whom are curious. Cannot tell the types though, by first glance. Never really cared much for it.
"You're no fun," I heard the sounds of grass being crushed under something, indicating footsteps. A body's presence loomed near me, and I saw from the corner of mine eye, that Laurance sat beside me. "What is up with you?"
"And that being?"
"That, right there, is what I am freaking talking about!" He groaned, thrashing his arms about like a madman. "I can't understand what half the things that come of your mouth, mean!"
"That 'tis your issue. For, I know what 't is, that I speak of."
"What the fuck did you just say? I doubt that it was even English."
"It t'was. Perhaps thou should learn their own language, better, if it could not be understood, what was spoken."
"Ugh, oh my Irene. Just stop with your bullshit, for one freaking second," he groaned once more. I glanced over at him, and watched as he flung himself backward onto the ground. He sighed, staring up at I. "So...uh... What are you looking at, out here?"
"Pardon?" Did I hear thou correctly? Is he genuinely interested in my being?
"You heard me, dimwit. What'chu lookin' at?"
I smiled, turning back to my original position. "...The world."
"Oh?"
"You know... The world keeps moving around us. We can either stay here, or move with it. That's the true hard part," I ran a hand through my hair, quietly sighing.
"You are so freaking cryptic tonight, and it's scaring the Hell out of me."
Maybe I shall ask 'bout what Miss Aphmau had previously mentioned, earlier...
"Hey..-"
"Again, with the 'hey'?"
"May I...ask thou a question..?"
"..." He paused for a moment, taking a brief second to think. "You know what? Sure. What is it?"
