Chapter 6
Back in the living room, they explained to Tony what had happened on Earth as the screens showed all the heroes they had lost.
Among the Avengers were Rocket, the racoon, and Nebula, who was apparently another one of Thanos' daughters.
"It's been 23 days since Thanos came to Earth," Rhodey said.
"World governments are in pieces," Natasha added.
Madison let out a shuddering breath when she saw Pietro's picture.
Steve put a hand on the back of her neck to try and calm her.
"The parts that are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did...He did exactly what he said he was gonna do. Thanos wiped out 50% of all living creatures."
"Peter?" Madison whimpered, seeing his picture, "Oh my god." Madison could feel her heartrate building.
"Hey, hey, Baby Bird. Look at me. Breathe," Natasha told her.
Madison looked at Natasha and tried to level out her breathing.
"There you go. You're safe."
In addition to depression, Madison's panic attacks had come back. Her doctor had to switch her to anxiety medication safe for pregnant women, so it was still working it's way into her system.
"Where is he now? Where?" Tony asked.
"We don't know," Steve told him, "He just opened a portal and walked through."
Tony wheeled himself forward in his wheelchair and sighed. "What's wrong with him?" he asked, pointing at Thor.
"Oh, he's pissed. He thinks he failed. Which, of course, he did, but there's a lot of that going around, ain't there?" Rocket said.
Green fire licked at Madison's fingers.
"Hey, easy," Steve told her.
Pietro's voice popped into her head. A memory from back before this whole mess started. Legko tam, Kolibri. Legko.
She'd been discouraged from using her powers since there was no way to tell if it would harm the baby or not. They also had no idea if the baby would have powers or not.
"Honestly, until this exact second I thought you were a Build-A-Bear," Tony said.
"Maybe I am," Rocket said.
"We've been hunting Thanos for three weeks now. Deep space scans and satellites, and we got nothing," Steve said, "Tony, you fought him."
"Who told you that? I didn't fight him. No, he wiped my face with a planet while the Bleeker Street magician gave away the stone. That's what happened."
"Okay."
"There was no fight, 'cause he's not beatable."
"Did he give you any clues, any coordinates, anything?"
Tony blew a raspberry. "I saw this coming a few years back. I had a vision..." He turned to Madison. "Thanks to your witchy sister-in-law."
Madison wouldn't admit that it hurt her when Tony brought up the Maximoff's. He knew the twins were gone, so it was downright cruel for him to bring them up.
"I didn't want to believe it. Thought I was dreaming."
"Tony, I'm gonna need you to focus."
"And I needed you. As in, past tense. That trumps what you need. It's too late, buddy. Sorry." Tony stumbled to his feet, knocking things over on the table. "You know what I need? I need a shave. And I believe I remember telling all a'youse..." Tony started pulling out his IV. "Alive and otherwise, that what we needed was a suit of armor around the world. Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not. That's what we needed."
"Well, that didn't work out, did it?"
"I said we'd lose. You said, "We'll do that together, too." And guess what, Cap? We lost. And you weren't there."
Madison stood up. "That wasn't his fault, Tony."
Tony scoffed. "You will always defend him. Now that lover-boy isn't here, you gonna fall back into his arms again?"
Madison's eyes turned green and green fire enveloped her hands. "Do not. Mess with me, Tony. I've just lost the love of my life and I'm pregnant with his baby now. You really wanna piss off a pregnant woman?"
Tony turned to Steve. "That's what we do, right? Our best work after the fact? We're the Avengers. We're the Avengers, not the Pre-vengers." Tony was starting to wobble on his feet, so Rhodey grabbed onto him.
"Okay," he told him.
"Right?"
"You've made your point. Just sit down, okay?"
"Okay. No, no, here's my point. You know what? She's great by the way." Tony pointed at Carol. "Tony, you're sick. Sit down. We need you."
"You're new blood. Bunch of tired old mules."
Tony pulled away from Rhodey and walked up to Steve. "I got nothing for you, Cap. I got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options. Zero. Zip. Nada. No trust, liar." Tony grabbed onto his nanotech arc reactor and pulled it off his chest. He put it in Steve's hand. "Here, take this. You find him, you put that on, you hide." Tony collapsed to his knees.
"Tony!" Madison yelled, rushing to his side.
"I'm fine, Katniss." Then Tony collapsed into her arms.
"Madison!" Steve reached for her, but she put a hand up.
"I'm fine, Steve. Pregnant, not invalid."
Steve sighed. "I know. I'm just...I worry about you."
Madison smiled. "I know and I appreciate that." Madison thought she'd never be able to cope with Pietro, but she was lucky she had a man like Steve Rogers on her side.
