Chapter 22
We arrived at the hospital and I started freaking out. I knew that as soon as that nurse called my name, I would go into a room alone and I would be prepped for surgery. Bobby told me he would be there for me. He's not gonna be there to hold my hand when they put the IV in. He's not gonna be there to help calm my nerves as soon as I lie down on that hospital bed. What on earth could he be doing that could be more important than his girlfriend?
"Arlene Allen," the nurse called. I looked over at Charles and Charlotte.
"I'll go with her," Charles offered. I immediately brightened up. Right now, I didn't care who went with me to that room. I just knew I needed comfort before I had to get an IV stuck in my arm.
The nurse lead us to the back room.
"I'm just gonna check your heart and we can start with the IV." the nurse said. I glanced at Charles nervously.
"It's okay, Arlene." Charles said, trying to calm me down. "Just take deep breaths."
"After the first little prick, this won't hurt at all. Don't worry." the nurse smiled. I nodded and took a deep breath. I turned away before she stuck the needle in my arm. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it was, but it was still freaking me out that I had to keep this IV in my arm until I fell asleep.
"I'm scared," I whispered when the nurse left.
"Don't be. I'll stay here with you until they tell me I have to go back to the waiting room. Everything will be fine, and if you need anything before you fall asleep, I'd be glad to get it for you." Charles replied.
"Thank you guys so much for everything. You and Charlotte have been my second parents and the best parents I've ever had, and Candice has been the best sort of little sister I've ever had. And Bobby has been the best guy in my life, besides you. Please let everyone know that I love them and I'm thankful to all of them if anything happens to me. And tell Bobby to tell the whole youth group, including the pastor, that I love them and that they have been my encouragement on my walk with God." this was all I wanted in case something happened to me throughout this surgery.
"Tell them yourself when you get out of this hospital. I love you, Arlene. I feel like you are my own daughter. I'll be praying for you while you're in here." Charles replied.
"Thank you so much. I love you, too." just then I started feeling drowsy. I yawned and closed my eyes. Charles held my hand as I fell asleep. I was so thankful for my "Dad." Well, he would be my dad (in law) if I lived long enough to marry Bobby.
I opened my eyes, and when I did, I didn't even know where I was.
"Where am I?" I asked. I wasn't in the hospital. Charles wasn't there. No one was there. The sun was shining right on my face, and I felt like I was walking on a cloud.
"My daughter, I love you." I heard a loud voice that roared like thunder.
"Who is it?" I asked.
No answer.
I looked around and saw a Cross.
"What the—,"
"Lay your loads down here," the loud voice said again.
I didn't even realize it, but I held a big bag on my back.
No wonder my feet were so sore. I thought. I took the bag off of my back and laid it down before the Cross. I felt so much better; like a weight had been lifted off of me.
"Thank you," I whispered. Was I in Heaven? Did I die? No. I would know if I died, and I didn't. It was just a dream.
"I love you, my child," said the voice. I realized then that it was God!
"I love you, Jesus! Thank you!" I yelled, lifting my hands.
I then woke up.
"No, it can't be over!" I yelled.
"Calm down, sweetie!" a nurse said, coming over to my bedside.
"What happened? Is the surgery done?" I asked. "Ouch!" my side was killing me.
"Take it easy. Just lie back down. You need some rest. We finished the surgery half an hour ago. We have to keep you overnight." she replied. "You need anything?"
"I'm thirsty." I said, realizing my mouth was dry.
"I'll get you some water. Do you need anything else?" she asked.
"I'm hungry." I replied.
"You can't eat anything for four more hours. I'll get you a large chocolate milkshake, that should keep you full." she said and left.
I sighed. I wish I could just go home and eat all the food I wanted.
I closed my eyes to rest. I wasn't really tired but I was bored and I had nothing else to do, so why not?
After a few minutes the nurse came back in, with one large chocolate milkshake and water, as promised, but she also brought orange juice. That was kind of odd. I didn't need so many drinks.
"Here you are," she said, smiling and placing the tray on some table thing that went across my legs.
"Thank you," she started to walk out but I stopped her, "Hey, uh, is my family here?" I asked.
"Charles and Charlotte Davis?"
"Yeah," I replied.
"They're out in the waiting room. I'll go get them for you." she smiled and left the room.
Why would they still be here? Candice was probably at home with the next door neighbor, and I have no idea where Bobby could be because I haven't seen him for hours. Just then Charles and Charlotte came in.
"Oh, Arlene, I'm glad everything went alright! Do you feel okay?" Charlotte asked, rushing over to my bedside.
"I feel fine. Where's Bobby?" I asked, sitting up. I winced in pain.
"Are you okay? You'll have to take it easy now." Charlotte said.
"I'm fine. Where's Bobby?" something was definitely going on.
"Are you hungry? You better drink up that milkshake because you can't get any food for awhile."
"You're stalling. Where's Bobby?" I asked for the third time.
Charlotte started reaching towards the milkshake to pull it closer to me, "Here, let me—," I grabbed her arm.
"Charlotte," I paused, "Where's Bobby?"
Charlotte sighed.
"Arlene, he didn't want us to tell you. His kidney is in your body." Charles told me.
"I don't understand," I replied.
"Bobby donated his kidney. For you." Charles explained.
"He is a freakin' idiot! What's his room number?" I exclaimed dramatically.
"208. But Arlene, wait—," I got up and shoved Charles out of the doorway. I winced in pain and held my side. I was in unbearable pain, but Bobby and I were inseparable. I was going to get to him if I was on the urge of death.
I ran to room 208 and opened the door. There he was. Pale faced Bobby. Lying in the hospital bed. Because of me. His mouth was the same color as his pale, white face.
"Bobby, wake up, please," I sat beside him.
"Arlene," he whispered.
"Bobby!" I leaned over him. "Are you okay? When we get out of here—,"
"I was talking about you," he whispered, interrupting me. I automatically knew what he was talking about. My mind flashed to when he took me up on that mountain balcony. I said I was enjoying the view, and he said he was too. I had no idea he was talking about me or I would've slapped that sly grin off of his face. In case you haven't caught on yet, I don't take compliments well.
Bobby closed his eyes.
"Bobby, please, don't leave me," I whimpered quietly, holding his hand, feeling a tear drip down my face.
A loud machine beeped. I immediately ran to the door.
"Nurse!" I yelled. A bunch of people came in, including the doctor who did my surgery, Doctor Miller.
"His heart stopped," the doctor said. "Get her out of here. She shouldn't watch this."
"No, please, I want to stay with him," I cried, while a nurse ushered me out of the room and basically slammed the door in my face. Charles and Charlotte came running towards me.
"Arlene, what's wrong?" Charlotte asked.
"Bobby, he's dead,"
