Chapter Twelve - Half a Heart
"Forget all we said that night,
No, it doesn't even matter,
Because we both got split in two.
If you could spare an hour or so,
We'll go for lunch down by the river,
We could really talk it through." - Half a Heart - One Direction.

As he swiftly grabbed his jacket, Paul made his way out of his room and toward the bathroom as he pushed his hands against his hair, flattening his jumper down with his free hand.
"Are you trying to impress the mother of your child?" Mike laughed from the doorway of his room, raising his eyebrows at Paul. Paul didn't say anything, he just raised his hand and his middle finger at Mike before continuing to push his hair in different directions. "Paul, you look fine!" Mike laughed.
"Do I?" Paul sighed, finally looking over at Mike.
"Yes!" Mike rolled his eyes, walking toward Paul and shoving him out of the bathroom.
"Alright, alright!" Paul laughed with him, playfully stumbling out of the bathroom. He put his jacket on and sighed heavily, zipping it up. "God, I'm so nervous."
"Why? It's not like you've never met her before." Mike rolled his eyes playfully, watching Paul.
"Yes, but we're meeting for a slightly different reason this time, Mike!" Paul widened his eyes, starting to walk toward the stairs. Mike followed and laughed, shaking his head. "Dad, I'm going! I don't know what time I'll be back!"
"Alright!" Jim made his way toward the doorway of the kitchen, looking Paul up and down a few times before speaking, "Best of luck, son. I hope you manage to get everything sorted." Jim smiled slightly uncomfortably.
"Thanks, dad. Don't worry, it'll be fine. I'll be back before you know it and everything will be alright." Paul tried to reassure him, slipping on his shoes as he got nearer to the door and picking up a bag that was by the side of it.
"Fingers crossed." Jim nodded nervously and watched Paul as he made his way out of the door.
Quickly sparking up a cigarette, Paul headed toward the bus stop. In his other hand he held a bag, his father's idea, which was filled with snacks and drinks. His father thought that the two of them would feel more at ease if it was more like having a picnic by the docks. He hopped on the bus and paid the driver, taking a seat and exhaling the smoke before swallowing hard. Never did he ever expect himself to be heading to Daisy to talk about something like this. This was way more grown up than he was used to. All of his future depended on these next few hours.
As the bus pulled up in the city centre, Paul scowled and looked around, noticing Daisy nowhere to be seen. Thoughts rushed through his mind; had she just stood him up? Had she decided she no longer wanted him to have anything to do with their child? He lit up yet another cigarette out of nerves and took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he leant back against the wall behind him.
"Hey." A small voice spoke, making Paul jump slightly as he opened his eyes again, seeing Daisy stood before him.
"O-Oh, hello there!" Paul smiled uneasily, standing up straight again.
"Shall we walk?" Daisy raised her eyebrows.
"Sure." Paul nodded, keeping a tight grip of the bag in his hand as he felt his heartbeat rising just from her presence.
"Whats in there?" She asked, gesturing toward the bag as they began to walk.
"O-Oh, just some nibbles to keep us going." Paul shrugged with a soft smile, "D-Dad thought it would be a good idea."
"You've told him?" Daisy asked, turning to him as they made their way through the city centre and toward the docks.
"Yeah... I told him last night. Have you told yours?" He asked nervously.
"I've told my mum. Not my dad, I'm afraid of what he might say." She widened her eyes slightly and cleared her throat.
"How did she react?" Paul lifted the cigarette back to his mouth.
"Shocked, but kind of happy. I'm their only child, so it was only up to me to give them a grandchild, which she said she's always wanted. Just not exactly this young." She blinked hard, turning back to Paul, "How about your father?"
"W-Well, uh, the same, really." Paul exhaled the smoke before speaking again, "He wasn't happy at first. I thought he was going to shoot through the ceiling! But I think that was just shock, really. He's warmed to it a little more, though, I hope..." He sighed, mumbling under his breath as they sat on the grass by the river front, "He's doesn't approve that we're not together, though."
"Well, I'm glad that both of our parents aren't too upset about it." Daisy widened her eyes, swallowing hard as she leant back on her hands.
"Me too. I suppose they're the best support we've got, seen as they've both been through it before." Paul attempted to chuckle, also leaning back on his hands.
"That's true. We've got them... And each other?" Daisy swallowed hard as she spoke, glancing up at Paul. Paul widened his eyes slightly, unsure of how to respond.
"S-Sure." He stuttered.
"Good." She crinkled her nose, reaching for the bag and smiling, "Can I see what you brought, please? I'm hungry!"
"Of course," Paul nodded with a soft smile, opening the bag for her and revealing the sandwiches he had prepared earlier, "Here you go. I'm no chef, so don't expect anything spectacular." He chuckled. Daisy reached into the bag and pulled out a sandwich, biting into it with a small smile. Paul watched her closely and found himself smiling with her.
"It's not bad at all, Paul." She spoke softly, crinkling her nose. Paul's eyes widened slightly in surprise and he felt his smile brightening, chewing the inside of his lip.
"Th-Thank you." Paul replied quietly, blinking hard as he reached in for a sandwich for himself. The both of them enjoyed comfortable silence for the first time in a long while. Paul knew exactly what he wanted to ask her, but he had no idea how to word it.
He swallowed the last mouthful of his sandwich before taking a deep breath, nervously scratching his arm, "U-Uh, Daisy.. Wh-When this baby comes, how are we going to look after it, hm? I-I don't mean exactly /how/, but... We don't live together.. B-Because we're not /together/." His voice was nervous, scared to even hear her answer, "How are we going to make it work?"
"We will." She spoke simply.
"But... How?" Paul squinted his eyes slightly and leant back on his hands, wiping the crumbs off his face before hand.
"We just will." She smiled softly, looking away as her hand briefly brushed against his knuckles. Paul felt his breath hitch in his throat and he swallowed hard, glancing down at her fingers. "You're really getting somewhere with this band, aren't you? Think of what kind of life we can give this child if you guys make it big." She widened her eyes, squeezing his hand gently and making his body shiver.
"Y-Yes, we will. I promise I'll do all I can so I can support this child." Paul nodded, smiling uneasily. "You can count on me to be a good dad."
"You're a good man, Paul. A very good man." She crinkled her nose, sighing softly. Paul narrowed his eyebrows and lightly laced his fingers with hers for a few moments before she rested her hand fully on top of his.
"Th-Thank you..." His smile widened, biting his lip.
"Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?" She arched a brow, tilting her head.
"I need to see John later, I think he has a right to know considering its going to have an impact on the band." Paul shrugged, looking down at her, "How about yourself, love?"
"I see.. I'm going to have dinner with my parents. Nothing fancy, we just want to go out and talk about what the future is now going to hold, finally tell my dad." She raised her eyebrows, looking over at him as their fingers played together against the grass, "How do you think John will take it?"
"I literally have no idea. It's very unpredictable. I'm bloody terrified, to tell the truth." Paul cringed, blinking hard.
"Well, if he wants such a good musician in his group, he's going to have to deal with it, isn't he?" Daisy crinkled her nose, giving Paul's hand a gentle squeeze. Paul jumped slightly but couldn't help but smile from her words, biting his lip shyly.
"Exactly." He winked, sticking his tongue out.
For a rare couple of hours or so, Paul and Daisy comfortably enjoyed each other's company. Nothing was forced, nothing was awkward, their conversation just flowed. Paul was very pleased, almost even excited at the fact of them having a little family. The main thing was that they were on good terms again, he was very content with that.
"Do you mind if we head back, Paul? I need to be back in time to get ready before we go out." Daisy pouted her lips.
"Of course, love, I'll make sure you get home safely and walk with you." He smiled softly and stood up, brushing the crumbs off him before throwing the empty bag in the bin.
"That's very kind of you." Daisy smiled back, holding onto Paul's hand as he helped her stand.
"You're very welcome." He nodded as she gained her balance before the two of them walked back in the direction of the bus stop, their hands brushing together several timed as they walked and in turn making Paul's heart flutter.
Once off the bus, Paul walked Daisy along her street and to her house, holding the gate open for her and following her up the path to her doorstep.
"Have a lovely meal, Daisy." He smiled kindly.
"I'll try!" She widened her eyes playfully, looking up at him.
"I'll see you soon." He raised his eyebrows, pulling her into a hug. Her arms locked around his neck and squeezed him gently, making a soft noise. After several seconds, they both pulled back, looking into one another's heavy eyes until Daisy brought him into a gentle kiss against his lips. Paul couldn't help himself, his entire body responded by pushing itself forward, kissing her back straight away with a soft gasp. Neither of them said anything, they just continued to remain in the moment of the kiss. Her arms tightened around his neck slightly and he tilted his head, teasing the tip of his tongue against hers. Daisy parted her lips and allowed him access, breathing heavily as her fingers tangled themselves in the hair at the nape of his neck. She soothingly scratched against his skin, making him draw her hips in closer to his.
"N-Now, now... That's what got us into this." She pulled back with a breathy giggle. Paul's eyes remained closed for a few long moments, almost as if he was convinced that he was dreaming.
"Sh-Sh.." He whispered, finally opening his eyes.
"I hope my parents didn't see." She bit her lip with a smirk, moving her hands down to rest against his shoulders.
"D-Do you think I should come in and speak to your parents about..." His voice trailed off, gesturing toward her stomach.
"O-Oh, sure. But not now, Paul. I think they need to let it sink in first before speaking to the baby's dad about it. I think my dad should hear it from me first..." She responded.
"That's understandable. Maybe I could organise a meal with our parents and us?!" He suggested excitedly, widening his eyes.
"Good idea!" She nodded quickly, "We can do this, you know. We have one way of money coming in that could possibly turn into much more for you, and I will give it all the love a mother could possibly give." She sighed softly, looking up at him. "I believe in us, Paul."
"Its going to be an incredibly journey." Paul grinned, squeezing her gently, "W-Wait, you really believe in u-.."
"Daisy! Come on, we need to be heading off!" Daisy's mother cut off Paul's words, shouting through a pushed open window.
"Hello!" Paul smiled politely, looking over at the window.
"I'm sorry, Paul, I need to go!" Daisy narrowed her eyebrows, turning to open the door before Paul tapped her shoulder.
"Can I see you again? Like, this week...Please?" He asked nervously.
"Y-Yes... I'm free after eight on Thursday evening." She smiled.
"Thursday it is!" Paul beamed.
"I'll see you then. Goodbye, Paul." She smiled and made her way inside.
"Goodbye, Daisy." He smiled back, waving as she shut the door.
What on earth? Was Paul definitely not dreaming? Did she really say... She believed in Paul and her? He genuinely thought that his chest was about to explode. First their fingers fooling around, then the hand grab, then the kiss... Then /that/ kiss. He felt incredible. He didn't feel smug, not like he had just made a girl fall at his feet, more like he was just getting happier again. Content.
He wasn't entirely sure whether or not to bring up their breakup or how she reacted when they woke up next to each other. Right now, he was glad he didn't. Today went perfectly.
The next big step was telling John. Paul had never been more nervous. This was his entire career, he and the group were really excelling and if John took this in the wrong way, such as this standing in the way of what they could be, it could go terribly. The group were meeting at The Phil for a drink. Paul and the rest of them were there, everyone except John. The rest of them knew exactly how scared Paul was and none of them envied being in his position.
"Good luck, mate." George nudged him gently as he spotted John walking into the pub.
"What's up?" John asked as he entered the room, arching his eyebrow as he gazed down at Paul nervously awaiting his arrival.
"I... Uh, I've got some news." Paul shrugged casually, staring down at his feet.
"News? Is everything alright, mate?" John scowled, looking around at the others who were in the room.
"W-Well... You know me and Daisy fooled around a little while ago?" Paul swallowed hard, still refusing to make eye contact as John nodded, "...She... Uh, she's pregnant... I- I'm going to be a dad.." Paul's voice was slightly shaky and small, glancing up at John just briefly to try and catch his reaction, yet also fearing it.
"She's pregnant?!" John exclaimed after a few moments of silence trying to let the news register in his head. Paul nodded and cleared his throat uneasily. "You're... Going to be a dad?"
"I am..." Paul whispered, nodding hesitantly.
"Well, great bloody timing, Paul! Fantastic, just as we had a shot at making something of this group and you just can't keep it in your pants." John shook his head, covering his face with his hands as he grumbled into them, "Unbelievable."
"I..." Paul narrowed his eyebrows, unsure of what to say, "It's a shock to me, too..."
"How? How is it a bloody shock to you?!" John's voice raised with each word, shaking his head, "You're the one that stuck it in in the first place!" He rolled his eyes, looking around at the rest of the group, "Why does no one else care?!"
"Because we already know..." George spoke in a timid voice, almost flinching in fear for John to lash out at him. Paul bit his lip hard and uneasily pushed his fingers through his hair.
"Hang on, so they all know and I don't? Why?!" John was practically shouting by this point.
"Because I knew this was how you were going to react!" Paul groaned, sighing loudly in frustration, "Look, I know this isn't exactly bloody ideal, but we'll have to work with it."
"So you're going to tell her she can't go through with this, right?" John raised his eyebrows, completely ignoring Paul's last comment, "You're going to tell her she can't have your baby, aren't you?"
"No, John, it's her body, not mine!" Paul shook his head quickly, John's words starting to strike anger in him. John took a deep breath and stepped closer to Paul, almost squaring up to him.
"Yeah, and it's /my/ group. And I can kick you out of it just as easy as I brought you into it." He spoke through gritted teeth, harshly prodding Paul's chest with his finger before storming out of the room, his furious footsteps echoing down the corridor.
