Chapter 13 - Ode to a Koala Bear
"Oh, I love you,
I still care,
All my affection is there." - Ode to a Koala Bear - Paul McCartney.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul wanted so badly to be happy, but he couldn't help but repeatedly go over what John said to him. Was he serious about wanting to throw Paul out of the group or did he just say that out of anger? The last couple of days had been hell, he hadn't seen any of the boys or Daisy, he was just left alone with his own thoughts. He spent the majority of it with his guitar; the only thing he felt he could connect to and not get grief off.
"Son?" Jim spoke from the bottom of the stairs.
"Yes?" Paul called back, stopping his strumming on his guitar and resting his fingers over the frets.
"Someones here to see you." He replied. Paul squinted his eyes and set his guitar down before standing up and making his way out of his room, walking down the stairs. He was greeted by a timidly smiling George in the doorway, raising his eyebrows and smiling back.
"Alright?" Paul asked.
"Yeah. Are you?" His smile turned into a soft one.
"I'm alright... I haven't really been out much." Paul shrugged, gesturing for George to come in and shutting the door behind him, "I didn't want to bump into him." He rolled his eyes.
"John?" George arched a brow. Paul nodded and stayed silent. "Let's go out."
"Out?" Paul scowled.
"Yes, come on! Lets just go for a drink or something." George smiled.
"Alright, I guess. I could just drink a cold pint." He nodded, reaching for his jacket before slipping his shoes on.
"That's the spirit!" George beamed.
"Dad, I'm going out with George, I'll see you when I get back!" Paul called through the crack in the living room door.
"See you later, boys." Jim smiled as Paul popped his head around the door.
"I'm going to see Daisy later, so don't be worried if I don't come home for a little while." Paul waved goodbye to his dad before making his way outside with George and shutting the door behind him.
"How are things going with you and Daisy?" George asked, turning to Paul as they walked down the path and toward his garden gate.
"It's... Pretty good, thank you." He shrugged casually with a shy smile.
"Yeah? Have you managed to make her fall back into your arms yet?" George teased, playfully nudging Paul's arm.
"I, well... Sort of. But not quite yet. Not fully." He bit his lip, walking over the road with George and toward the bus stop.
"What on earth does that mean?!" George laughed out his words.
"Maybe we had a little kiss." Paul spoke quietly, feeling his cheeks burning.
"No!" George gasped as he turned to him.
"Yeah... It was just a kiss, but it was nice.. Y'know?" Paul chewed his bottom lip, looking down at his feet, "And she kept going for my hand when we were sat down."
"So, do you think you're back in there, then?" George asked, wiggling his eyebrows before stepping on the bus when it pulled up at the spot. Paul shrugged shyly and paid the bus driver before making his way over to a seat, moving over slightly more when George came to join him.
"Cig?" Paul asked, reaching into his pocket.
"No, thank you. I don't want mum to have a fit when I go home smelling of them." George shook his head.
"Just wash it down with a beer!" Paul laughed out his words, lighting his cigarette before taking a drag.
"Oh, because she'd be happy with me smelling of that, too!" George chuckled back at him, shaking his head.
"Come on, we all know you're their favourite child." Paul winked, exhaling the smoke.
"Stop avoiding the question about you and Daisy!" George widened his eyes.
"What about me and Daisy?" Paul knitted his eyebrows together.
"Are you two going to get it on again?" He asked, trying not to smirk.
"Who knows... You know, I don't think I could turn her down." Paul shrugged, glancing down in his lap, "I still really, really like her."
"Here we go..." George rolled his eyes playfully, trying not to laugh when Paul elbowed his side.
"You bloody asked!" Paul squinted his eyes at him.
"I didn't expect such a soppy response." George nudged him back.
"Well, of course I'm going to love the mother of my child." Paul scowled a little, taken aback from his own words, "Wow, that still sounds strange to say."
"I don't think anyone has quite got their head around it yet." George cleared his throat.
"Well, they're going to have to." Paul replied bluntly, blinking hard before speaking, "We're both going through with it and we're both going to raise it as well as we can."
"Good luck." George smiled kindly and stood up when he noticed the bus getting closer to their stop. Paul smiled back and stood up with him, keeping the cigarette between his lips. The both of them thanked the bus driver and made their way off the bus, walking toward the pub.
"Wait.. Who else is going to be here?" Paul asked uneasily, his footsteps getting slower as they approached the pub.
"Uh.. Just a small group of us." George tried to sound casual and calm.
"John's here, isn't he? This is why you brought me!" Paul exclaimed, sighing deeply.
"Paul, you need to settle it! He's agreed to talk!" George pleaded.
"I'm not going in." Paul shook his head.
"Yes, you are! What are you going to do, never speak to him again?! Walk away from the band?!" George raised his voice.
"I'd rather walk away than hear him tell me he doesn't want me in it anymore." Paul spoke quietly.
"Paul, please, trust me.. He is /not/ going to say that." George narrowed his eyebrows, tugging at Paul's arm, "Just listen to what he has to say. Please."
"Fine." Paul groaned, rapidly taking drags from his cigarette before tossing it to the floor and timidly following behind George as they walked into the pub. Paul felt his hands shaking madly, he was so afraid of hearing bad news. If this was the end of the road for him being in the band, not only would it put an end to his biggest dream and an end to his closest friendships, but it would also mean that it would be much harder to bring up his child.
"We're here!" George looked at the rest of the band with a cheesy grin.
"Nicely late as usual, Paul." John joked, looking up at him.
"O-Oh, I didn't know that... We had a time to be here for." Paul spoke nervously.
"I'm kidding, mate." John pulled a silly face at him and took a drink from his beer before looking up at Paul, "Listen, as much as this pains my ego to say, I just want to apologise for how I reacted to your little announcement." He almost gritted his teeth as he spoke, hardly ever admitting he was wrong.
"I...It's okay." Paul replied quietly.
"It's not, I overreacted and you didn't deserve that. Of course we still want you in the band. All of us will support you through this, as long as you promise you will continue to support and put one hundred precent effort into the band, too." John raised his eyebrows.
"Sure, I promise." Paul nodded, still shocked.
"Do we have a deal?" John asked.
"We do." Paul smiled.
"Great! Now come and sit with us!" John exclaimed, patting the spot next to him before shouting, "Someone get this lady's man a drink!"
"We can all act like a band again!" George grinned, also sitting down.
"So, the most important question... Have you boned her again yet?" John tried not to laugh as he spoke.
"No!" Paul shook his head with a loud laugh.
"Why, what are you afraid of? Getting her pregnant?" John teased, still trying not to laugh.
"Hm, maybe!" Paul rolled his eyes, tapping his hands on the table, "However, all could change tonight."
"Oh? What are you up to tonight, Macca?" John gasped playfully.
"We're meeting tonight, I think we're going to go for a walk, I don't know." Paul shrugged.
"Translation: a shag in a field." John cackled.
"Oh, come off it!" Paul laughed, shaking his head.
"What, you're not thinking of it?" John scowled playfully.
"It's Paul, he's /always/ thinking of it!" Pete laughed out his words.
"Oh, please! If anything happens, it happens. If not, I'm just happy to spend time with her." Paul pouted his lips.
"At least you won't need to worry about wearing a rubber." Stuart chimed in, coming back from the bar with a drink for himself and Paul.
"Oh, piss off, all of you!" Paul laughed out his words, looking up at Stuart.
"Well, /you're welcome/." Stuart spoke sarcastically as he placed the drink on the table for him, laughing along with everyone else.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hello, darling." Paul spoke in a jolly tone the moment he saw Daisy.
"Hi." She let out a soft giggle at Paul's happy expression. Paul inhaled deeply as he watched her walk down the path toward him.
"May I?" He asked, gesturing to her cheek as she got closer to him. She nodded and stuck her cheek out, grinning when she felt Paul's lips brush against her cheek.
"How are you doing?" She asked, starting to walk with him.
"I'm great, thank you, love." Paul crinkled his nose, looking down at her, "How are you? Most importantly." He arched a brow, lightly pressing the palm of his hand against her stomach.
"Good, thank you." She smiled softly, hugging onto Paul's arm as they walked.
"Have you had any.. morning sickness or anything?" Paul asked, keeping himself close to her.
"Not as of yet, no, I believe I've been quite lucky!" She grinned, giving his arm a gentle squeeze.
"I wasn't quite sure if you got it so early on." Paul shrugged, smiling as he looked down at her, "But I'm glad you don't seem to be suffering from it at all."
"I'm thankful for it, but I'm not going to hold my breath quite yet." She crinkled her nose, looking up at Paul, "Where are we going?"
"Well, I thought we could go down to Sefton Park, hm?" Paul arched a brow, suddenly taking back his own words, "B-But we don't have to, not if you don't think its safe at this time of night. I don't want to put you at risk.. Either of you." He swallowed hard, lightly brushing his hand over her stomach as they walked.
"It's fine, Paul. I've got a strong man to take care of me, haven't I?" She bit her lip, keeping her gaze on him and tugging at his arm slightly.
"I suppose so." He spoke quietly, biting his lip with a grin when he felt his cheeks burning red from her words. She let out a soft giggle and they both walked in the direction of the park, keeping close to each other. There was comfortable silence between them both, no awkwardness or feeling uncomfortable, just simple, content silence.
The two of them walked through the entrance to the park, only the dim lampposts lighting their way. Paul glanced down at her arm several times, smiling as it clasped around his own. He lead them toward a different path, one that would take them to the highest point in the park.
"You're really taking me on a dark tour of the park today, aren't you?" She giggled, crinkling her nose.
"I just know how much you love stargazing." Paul shrugged with a grin, looking toward the top of the hill, "And this is the best place to do it."
"You're very thoughtful, Mr. McCartney." She sighed softly, keeping close to his side.
"I try." He winked, leaning down to peck her cheek gently.
Once at the top of the hill, Paul sat down on the cool grass, patting the spot next to him.
"Hi." She shivered as she sat down next to him, smiling.
"Come here." Paul shook his jacket off before wrapping it around himself and Daisy.
"Thank you." She spoke softly, scooting slightly closer to him, "H-Have you told John yet?"
"I.. Yes." He nodded, widening his eyes, "He reacted worse than my dad! But he's alright now. He understands that we will make it work, me and you. I'll make it work around the band."
"Well, you did say he was the one you were most afraid of a reaction from." Daisy widened her eyes, clearing her throat, "My family know now. All of them."
"Oh, wow, all of them?!" Paul let out an uneasy chuckle, teasing, "You don't like keeping secrets, do you?!"
"Well, no, I just thought it would be best that everyone knew, then i'm not holding anything back any longer." Daisy shrugged, smiling.
"That is a very good point, love." Paul nodded with a smile.
"Why don't we lay back and get a real look at the stars, hm?" Daisy raised her eyebrows, laying back fully on the cold grass.
"Alright!" Paul laughed, quickly joining her and gazing up at the sky.
"Look at all that up there. All those stars. Always wondering if there is life on other planets." Daisy sighed softly, smiling to herself.
"It sure is pretty fascinating." Paul widened his eyes, trying to pretend he knew what she was talking about.
"I'm so lucky to be studying such an interesting subject. Don't you think its incredible?" She asked, biting her lip.
"Do you know what I do think is incredible?" Paul arched a brow, chewing his bottom lip as he moved himself closer to her, "That we made whatever is in there." He whispered, placing his hand gently over her stomach.
"We did." Daisy nodded. "And 'whatever is in there' is a little baby, Paul." She giggled, watching his hand move back and forth over her stomach. "Our baby."
"Our baby." Paul nodded, biting his lip. Daisy placed her hand over his and closed her eyes. "Daisy... That kiss the other night.."
"What kiss?" She asked, making Paul scowl.
"Th-That kiss.. On your doorstep." Paul stuttered, confused at how she could've forgotten so quickly.
"I'm afraid you'll have to show me what you mean." She whispered with a slight smirk, reaching up to bring his face closer to hers.
"Gladly." Paul mumbled, wasting no time in pressing his lips directly to hers and closing his eyes, keeping his hand on her stomach. Daisy laid flat on her back as she allowed Paul to prop himself up, leaning over her as he continued to devour her lips with his own. She reached up and pushed her fingers into the back of his hair, kissing him deeply and slowly as her eyes also fell shut. The both of them made soft whimpers, narrowing their eyebrows as their lips repeatedly touched against each others. Paul took in a sharp breath, scowling slightly as he felt Daisy pushing him back onto his back. However, she didn't break the kiss. Instead, she leant over him, kissing him passionately and hard as she rested her hand against his chest and rubbing it gently.
"Mm.. Look what you've started." She teased against his lips, moving her hand down to his stomach. Paul sucked his stomach in slightly, letting out a shaky breath. Paul stayed silent, enjoying the feeling of her gentle fingertips moving back and forth over his shirt. She moved them slightly lower, her fingertips now dancing along his belt line. This only resulted in Paul kissing her harder, squeezing his eyes shut as he felt an all too familiar warmth in the pit of his stomach. It was almost as if Daisy could sense this, laying her hand flat over the front of his pants as their tongues intertwined.
"D-Daisy are you sure you want to..." He practically breathed out his words until he felt her pop open the top button of his pants, bringing down his zip in one, swift movement.
She only pulled away briefly to speak, "Yes."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Paul, how would you feel about staying the night?" Daisy asked as they made it to the end of her garden path.
"R-Really?" Paul asked, completely shocked by her suggestion.
"Yeah.. I think it would be nice. It's getting chilly and I think we'd enjoy being all cozy." She shrugged shyly.
"I can't say no to that." Paul bit his lip and squeezed her hand gently, raising his eyebrows. "Are you sure your parents won't mind?"
"Well, think about it, Paul, whats the one reason why parents don't like letting their children have someone over for the night?" Daisy asked, pursing her lips. Paul scowled and narrowed his eyes slightly, trying to think of an answer.
"Because they don't want them... Sleeping together?" He guessed.
"Exactly." Daisy nodded, pushing the door open and taking his hand, "But I think its very obvious that that's already been done, don't you?" She giggled, leading him inside.
"You have a good point." Paul chuckled, kicking off his shoes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul had only dreamt of nights like this. Snuggled up with the person he loved more than anyone in the world, hugging them protectively against him. For the first time in a while, their bare skin touched against one another's. It was oddly satisfying. It was a cold, wintery night, but the heat radiating off their bodies and mixing together like some peaceful warmth beneath the sheets was enough to keep them cozy. Paul had his arms wrapped around Daisy from behind, brushing his lips against her shoulder every now and then. One of his hands were lightly pressed against her stomach, massaging his fingertips against it for a few moments.
"Paul?" Daisy spoke, watching his fingers go back and forth against her stomach.
"Yes, darling?" Paul replied softly, continuing to move his fingers in slight patterns against her stomach.
"I think I love you." She whispered, swallowing hard. Paul widened his eyes for a brief moment before scowling.
"You... /Think/ you love me?" He asked, not stopping the motions of his fingertips.
"I do.." She answered, soothingly running her nails up and down his arm. "I'm sorry, Paul.. I'm sorry about what happened." She mumbled, "I'm sorry, but I love you."
"You don't have to be sorry about loving me, Daisy." Paul shook his head, "I love you." He spoke simply against her skin, kissing along her shoulder and toward the crook of her neck delicately and making her shiver in delight.
"I want us to be a family." She said, taking hold of his hand and lacing their fingers together before laying both of their hands over her stomach.
"Y-You do?" Paul almost gasped out his words, raising his eyebrows as she turned her head to face him.
"I do." She nodded with a smile.
"I know we can do it, baby... Me, you, and that little baby thats in there. Our own little family." He smiled back, sealing his approval with a kiss.
