96.
I SEE her scrunching her face in pain as Amelia is hunched forward. She's groaning and moaning, telling me she's in pain all at once. The passengers side door is open, the morning sun hitting our skin. I didn't know what to do or react, it was as if I were in slow motion.
"Hello?" The operator on the phone states. "Hello, sir? Are you there?"
I bite down on my lower lip as Amelia's inner thigh reveals a small trail of blood. Please, God, don't let it be today...
"I-I'm here," I stammer. "I need to report an accident," I say. "Someone just hit my car, and I'm going to need a lift to the hospital."
"Is anyone hurt?" The operator inquires. I can hear her typing on her computer. "Where are you located?"
I gave her the location as to where Amelia and I were located, my heart beating rapidly minute by minute.
"Alright sir, help is on the way." The operator announced. I hang up the phone and immediately crouch to Amelia's side. My entire windshield is shattered, shards of glass are coating the front part of the car. Amelia, thankfully, didn't get too scratched up, but what concerned me the most was our baby.
I prayed that God would heal her and that perhaps the baby would be fine, too. But as I watch Amelia cry in agony, blood dripping down, I knew that something was going to happen.
But I didn't want it to be what I was thinking it was.
..
The ambulance arrived within twenty minutes after I'd called for help. The paramedics asked Amelia a series of questions, and before I knew it, I was in the back of the ambulance, clutching onto her leg as I wasn't allowed to sit adjacently to her while the other paramedic was taking her vitals.
"This hurts so much," Amelia groaned. "I want it to fucking stop!"
I gave her shin a gentle squeeze, and as I did this, my heart sinks further into the pit of my stomach. I want to tell her that it's alright, but what if it wasn't?
I take a deep breath, tears brimming my eyes.
"It'll be alright, darling." I assure her with confidence. "We'll be home soon."
The rest of the ambulance ride was filled with beeping machines and cries of pain.
If only there was a way I could fix this.
If only.
After numerous ultrasounds, tests, and questions, it was determined that Amelia had a miscarriage. Meaning the baby was gone.
The sight of her bloodied panties and tear stricken face as she's come to know this news breaks me in more ways than one. I lost my mother, the woman who was my constant, despite my choice to leave, has passed away, and now my unborn child -- the reason I could finally be a better human being.
As we waited for the discharge paperwork, Amelia is staring off into space, staring at the cabinets in the room we were in. She looks distant, lifeless, even.
I touch her shoulder with my hand. "I'm going to the cafeteria to get some coffee. D'you want anything?"
She shakes her head, not even looking at me.
"No."
