Hesitant
About a month or so ago, Heather had told her something that still echoed in her head everyday.
"Astrid, life's too short. You need to express you're feelings. Stop wasting time. You two are perfect."
She inhaled and exhaled deeply. The blonde stood right in front of his hut. Astrid lifted her hand and just as she was about to knock, she hesitated and let her hand down.
Astrid's POV.
Should I really do this? Embarrass myself if he doesn't feel the same? I love Hiccup. It's just...I'm scared.
Yeah, the mighty Fearless Astrid Hofferson is scared.
I was almost fearless when I was 15. Before I got to know Hiccup. But, now, he can make me do almost anything. He knows a side of me no one else knows. My soft side.
The side I never show to anyone except Hiccup. He's my best friend. I can talk to him about anything and nothing, go hours without talking and just sitting beside each other without it feeling awkward.
He's amazing.
The thing is...back in the days, I kissed him and he didn't seem to mind. It looked like he enjoyed it. A few weeks ago. I hugged him when he was trapped in that cage at the dragon fights. He didn't seem to mind that either.
He helped me when I was sick with the Scourge. I just...
He said, "I can't imagine a world without you in it," and I thanked him and said it back.
I just...what if he doesn't feel the same-
"Astrid? What are you doing here?" A familiar voice broke me off and I looked up. I was sitting beside the door, my back leaned against the hut. I stood up and brushed myself off. "I...well, I was going to talk to you but, I wondered off in my thoughts and I just sat down," I said.
Hiccup looked at me before walking out and closing the door behind him.
"Okay. Well, what did you want to talk about?" He asked and waited patiently at me. I swallowed. Oh gods.
"Astrid, are you okay?"
My head snapped up and I smiled. "Yeah, of course. I'm just..." I trailed off again. "Listen," He begun a while after I trailed off. "If you don't want to talk about it, it's okay. I'll be here, Astrid," He said and smiled at me.
I sighed, nodded slightly and started to play with my fingers.
"Can we...go somewhere more private?" I asked and looked up at him. Hiccup nodded with a smile and called Toothless. The dragon walked out of the hut, yawned and stretched. We got in and took off into the air.
I was hesitant but I placed my hands on either side of Hiccup's waist. He didn't even flinch or mind it.
This reminded me of the time we first went flying on Toothless.
Geez, why should I be so scared and so insecure? It's Hiccup. I've been his best friend for years now. We can talk about anything and everything and nothing.
I just brush that insecure feeling away and smile slightly, wrap my arms around his stomach and hug him from behind. I place my head on his shoulder and I scoot closer to him in the saddle. My stomach is brushing against his back from time to time but I don't mind.
Hiccup turned his head slightly to the right to look at me. I smiled at him when he saw me. He smiled too with the most caring look in his eyes.
Turning back to look at the skies, he pulled back one of his hands from the saddle and and I could feel it on mine. His hand was warm and covering mine, his thumb stroking the back of my hand softly.
I just smile and bury my face into his neck, under his hair.
A few minutes after that, I felt us land and I pulled back, getting off. Hiccup got of a few moments after us and I looked around.
"This place is..."
"Beautiful," I heard him say. I looked at him and he was looking at me. "Yeah," I say and sit down. He walks over and sits down beside me. I look at him once he's finally seated and his hand lays beside mine. As always.
I look down and grab his hand in mine softly, tracing the lines in his palm. "Hiccup?" I ask.
"Yes, Astrid?"
"I've been wanting to tell you this for a while. I was confused when Heather first said this but, when I was sick with the Scourge...I realized that she was right."
"Okay? What did she say?"
"She said, "Astrid, life's too short. You need to express your feelings. Stop wasting time. You two are perfect," I said and looked at his hand before looking straight into his eyes.
"Perfect? Stop waiting time? Who? Astrid, what are you talking-"
"I like you."
I just blurred that out. He's looking at me with huge eyes. I let go of his hand and stand up, starting to talk again.
"Heather has been talking to me aloft when we used to be alone, wether it was in the forest, in my hut or just...somewhere where we were alone. She always said, "You have to tell him how you feel before it's too late. Guys won't stick around forever. He seems to really like you and you don't realize it? She always said I should tell you how I truly feel. I just, I think I was too scared. I didn't want rejection and-"
Author's POV.
He caught her off with a kiss. His hands landed on her waist and he pulled her closer, deepening the kiss. Astrid was confused at what that happened first but then, she placed her hands on his shoulder and around his neck.
They didn't break away for quite some time.
When they finally did, they knew exactly how they felt for each other.
Love.
