Chapter 7

Dylan

I'll be the first to admit, I've never really done my job right since the day I got it.

I don't mean that I was legally hired for this job, but it's mine now, and that's all that matters.

It's easy, really. As long as everything's running smoothly, which it always is, the alpha and his nosy son never know what I actually do, if you get my drift. Doug supervises Stella and sometimes fills in for me, and Stella serves our prisoners and cleans. Only they know my secret. That's okay, because they also know the punishment for telling on me.

"Wake up, kitty, so I can get your name and take your picture for the criminal record."

"Criminal record?!" That woke me up pretty quickly.

Doug unlocked my cell and escorted me to a dirty, well-lit room. "What's your full name?"

"Ava. That's all you need to know."

He looked as though he were about to argue, but I guess he realized it was pointless, because he sighed and wrote my name down on a piece of paper.

"Pose for the camera, kit-- Ava."

I gave the camera my best death stare. "Cheese."

He sighed and took the picture. "All you did was trespass, right?"

I flashed him a quick glance, trying to understand what he was getting at. "Yeah?"

"Swear it." He growled, his eyes dark. "Swear on your grandmother's grave."

I frowned, and a trickle of uncertainty ran down my spine. "Why?"

"Do it."

I clenched my teeth. "I swear on the grave of my grandmother Estelle Sparr that my only felony was trespassing."

He nodded at me. "I'm sorry, Miss. It's not safe for a teenage girl in this specific prison, and if all you did was trespass...well..." He stared down at some papers on his desk and frowned.

I heard a knock at the door. "Come in," I grumbled.

"I got her name, Sir. It's Ava."

My heart dropped to the soles of my shoes. "How old does she look? What's her last name?"

"She looks fifteen, sixteen, or seventeen. I'm a terrible guesser, though."

"That's right! Her sixteenth birthday was a couple days ago! She must have turned into a werecat. Why? Why? Why this prison? Why me?"

"Uhhhh....Sir?" Doug studied me closely.

"Thanks for letting me know, Doug," I growled, trying to keep my voice level. "As usual, please let me know if there any new developments."

Ava

I'm getting two weird feelings. One is my soulmate pull, and the other is the vibe from this whole prison. Somehow I feel that this prison and my soulmate are closely bound together in the weirdest way, but I don't understand why I feel that way. It's killing me.

Cooper

I still can't stop thinking about that girl. She sat in my mind like those dandelions that choke up a garden and won't let any other things grow. I wanted to go back to the prison to talk to her, but Dylan would try to kick my butt out the door, and I wasn't in the mood to get in a skirmish. Am I certain,  however, that I could beat him in a fight. He's not ripped like me. "Sorry, bro, but you're not a future alpha." Alphas are ripped, and that's all I'm gonna say.

I needed advice, though, on the dandelion girl. I guess I could ask my dad, Dominique Smithlock, but since he's the alpha, he has a lot on his plate and had no time for my 'pestering,' he calls it. Hmmph.

I knocked on the door to my parents' bedroom.

"Come in." That was my mom. That meant dad was in his office or still asleep.

I opened the door. Sure enough, dad was MIA. "Mom, can you describe how you felt toward dad before you married?"

"Now's not a very good time. Please leave me," she snapped, turning back to her laptop.

"I was just wondering," I retorted indignantly, already regretting my decision to ask for advice.

"Did you meet a girl?" Her eyes flashed resentfully.

"No." And I was telling the truth. I hadn't met her; I didn't even know her name. As I left the master bedroom, a plan started forming in my head. I was going to get arrested, and I was going to commit a kick-butt crime.

Comment and let me know what you think Cooper will do!
