Chapter 24
"Oh. My. God!" Lexi screams and runs toward me full force, "Sophia!"
She latches onto me as I walk through her door. I stumble back a couple of steps but I'm able to steady myself. I return her bone crushing hug and I smile to myself. I missed this girl.
"Hi Lexi!" I try to say, but since I barley have any breath in me, it comes out ruffled.
"Oops." She says and slowly detaches herself.
Air rushes into my lungs as I take in huge breaths to calm down. Wow, she's stronger than I remember. Lexi looks at me and I see tears lingering in her eyes.
"You were gone for so long, are you okay? I tried to go with the group to come rescue you but they only wanted the older fighters to go."
I smile and say, "I'm fine, and don't worry about that, I'm glad they didn't let you go. I wouldn't want to put you in danger because of me."
Her face is sympathetic and I can tell she still regrets not going. I can't blame her, I would be the same way if Lexi was the one who was taken. I guess she really does care for me like a best friend.
"Why don't you come in, I can make you lunch or a snack or something."
She grabs my hand and starts to lead me toward the kitchen. I freeze in my tracks pulling her to a halt. She whips her head around to look at me.
"Um, I'm not really hungry, but do you know where Vince is? I haven't seen him in a while." Her face falls.
"Oh. He is at the pack house right now. You can probably meet up with him there. He is hanging out with the football boys." She releases my hand.
I give her a strange look. What is it about those two that makes them hate one another so much? I don't understand, siblings are suppose to have a bond. They have nothing but distaste for each other. It is so confusing.
"Lexi why don't you like Vince?" I ask.
I see anger cross her features and she looks over at the wall, avoiding my eyes. She looks pissed at the world, maybe that wasn't the best question to ask.
"Sorry, I guess it's none of my business. I mean I will stay here if you want, I just need to tell Jayden that he can go to the pack house without me." I say and motion toward the front door.
Jayden wanted to wait in the car. He figured Vince wouldn't be home and he didn't want to ruin our girl time. He is probably bored out of his mind.
I see Lexi perk up a bit and she turns to me. "Jayden is with you?"
"Yeah, he is in the car." She gives me a strange look.
"Wow, you go girl. I didn't realize you were officially a thing! Looks like our plan worked after all!" She says excitedly.
I laugh, "Yeah I guess it did."
I leave it at that because I don't want to go through all the details of us having to hide our relationship from everyone for a while. I don't know if that is something that Jayden wants everyone to know about, considering his dad is the reason we had to do it.
"Well good for you guys, it must be nice having your mate." She says in a dreamy tone. She quickly snaps out of it an turns to me, "You can go with him to the pack house... I think I will just stay here. Maybe we can go out to a movie or get ice cream and have a girls night later this week?"
I smile brightly and pull her into another bone crushing hug, "That sounds fantastic. I missed you so much Lexi."
She squeezes me back and says, "I missed you too Soph."
After that I hop back into the car. I get into the passenger seat. Jayden wanted to drive my snazzy new car and I gladly let him. Boys love cars and plus I didn't feel up to driving. It's been over a month since I have driven a car, I should probably practice before I get back on the road.
"How did it go?" he asks.
"Great! I really missed her. Anyway, Vince is at the pack house, so let's head there." I say as I buckle my seat belt.
"To the pack house it is then." He takes the car out of park and out of the driveway.
"Hey Jayden."
"Yeah?"
"Why do Lexi and Vince hate each other." I see Jayden tense for a moment.
What? Is this a touchy subject for everyone? What the hell happened? Why do I feel so out of the loop?
"It's more like, why does Lexi hate Vince..." Jayden says. I stare at him, wanting to know more.
He doesn't seem that willing to give up information but I am very curious. I want to know why my two closest friends, who happen to be siblings, hate each other!
"So why does she hate him then?"
Jayden glances at me and turns back to the road. Then sighs, "It's kind of a personal story... I don't know if you should hear it from me."
I let out a small flustered groan.
"I've asked Lexi twice and Vince once, neither of them will say anything." I complain.
I look out the window and pout. I can't believe neither of them trust me enough to tell me! I get that it is personal but how personal can it get?
I hear a sigh, "Do you really want to know?" he asks.
"Yes..." I say as I continue to pout.
"Fine, I will tell you..." I perk up immediately and turn to Jayden.
Well that was easier than expected!
"A couple of years ago this girl moved into town. She was a werewolf and her and her family were soon welcomed into the pack. Lexi quickly befriended her. Her name was Amber. She actually had the same personality and persona as you. You kind of look similar as well.
"Anyway, they quickly became best friends. Amber and Lexi did everything together. Even after Amber started dating Vince, Lexi and her did a lot together. They were practically sisters. Lexi didn't like the fact that Amber and Vince were dating, but she tolerated it. She saw that her brother really cared for Amber so she didn't mind that much."
"Are they mates?" I ask.
"Who Amber and Vince?"
"Yeah."
"No, but they really did care about each other."
"Oh..." I find it weird to date someone if you are a werewolf, especially if you know you have a mate out there somewhere.
"Well Lexi and Amber had plans to have a movie night. Vince on the other hand, heard about a party that was going on at the other side of town... A bunch of us wanted to go, I had a meeting that night with my dad and another pack to confirm territory boundaries so I couldn't go. Vince didn't want to go alone so he invited Amber. Last minute she agreed and didn't even tell Lexi she wasn't going to their movie night...
"The next morning we got a phone call telling us there had been an accident. It was Vince's car. It got in a collision with a truck on the highway. The diver of the truck fell asleep. The car flipped and Amber didn't make it."
Oh my god. I reach up and cover my mouth in shock. That is terrible. I had no idea that anyone in the pack had died a couple years back.
"So Lexi blames Vince..."
Something in me snaps and I go into protective mode.
"But it isn't Vince's fault!"
"I know."
"And Vince is probably hurting just as much if not more than Lexi!"
"I know."
"Well then what's her problem?!"
"She doesn't see that. She can only see red. She blames him for taking Amber with him. If he went alone than none of it would have happened."
"Or he would have gotten into the accident alone. He might have died then. She can't blame him for something that he didn't do. It was Amber's choice to go with Vince, he didn't force her." I say. Anger boiling off of me.
How could she be mad at him for such a thing? As if he wanted to kill his girlfriend! She is being ridiculous! I just want to smack some sense into that girl.
"It's okay Soph, they will work it out eventually." He says, still focused on the road.
"Will they? Sometimes I feel like I have a better relationship with my aunt's fish than they have with one another."
He lets out a small chuckle then adds, "They weren't always like this. Before Amber came into the picture they were actually best friends."
I turn to Jayden, shock written all over my face. No flipping way. They used to be close and they ruined their relationship over this? No. I can't let this happen. I need to fix this, come up with a plan.
"Sophia." Jayden says, worry laced in his voice.
"Yes?"
"What are you thinking." He says in a stern voice.
"Nothing..."
"You weren't thinking about fixing their relationship were you?"
Dammit! He's good...
"Uh... no..."
He turns his head real fast towards me and raises an eyebrow. He saw right through my lie. Curse my poor lying skills! It's not fair!
"Sophia, you need to let them work it out on their own."
"But-"
"Sophia." He says sternly.
I feel like a little child! I pout out my bottom lip and fold my arms over my chest.
"Fine." I say.
"Promise?"
"Promise..."
He smirks and reaches his arm out. He ruffles my hair as if I'm a little kid. I feel small tingles shoot through my body and I relax a little. The feeling is quite soothing, surprisingly.
"Good girl."
We spend the rest of the ride listening to the radio. I watch our surroundings through the window and think. Eventually we make it to the pack house and Jayden parks the car in the driveway.
We hop out and I follow him to the familiar building. Wow, it has been a while. We enter through the front door.
"Lexi said Vince would be hanging out with the football boys." I say.
"Oh okay, they are always in the game room. Come on."
I follow him. We weave through the confusing hallways and finally get to a door. It is slightly opened and I feel nervous butterflies fluttering in my stomach. I haven't been around a lot of people in a while, I hope I don't act weird.
Jayden pushes the door open and a couple of people's heads turn toward us, the rest have their eyes locked on the screen. To my surprise there are girls scattered around the room along with the boys, I figured it would be just a boy thing.
"Hey Sophia! Jayden!" Vince yells, calling more eyes to turn toward us.
I feel my cheeks flush a bit. I catch familiar evil eyes stating at me from the corner of the room. I look over and see Ashley glaring at me. I kind of feel sorry for her. After my realization at Manus's, I have realized that her position is very unfortunate. But sadly, she is still a bitch so I don't feel that bad for her.
"Hey Vince." Jayden says.
"Hey!" I say happily as Vince approaches us.
Vince wraps me in a huge hug and spins me around. I laugh as he places me back onto the ground.
"Are you okay?" Vince asks me. He scans my face to make sure I'm doing alright.
"I'm doing great actually. And it has been a while. I miss hearing your stupid physics facts every morning." I say.
He laughs, "Well expect a lot more, I have been waiting over a month, I have a bunch saved up and ready for you."
I smirk, "Good, I can't wait."
Vince's eyes flick up to Jayden. I'm about to turn to see if Jayden is okay when Vince grabs my wrist and drags me toward the tv.
"Make room guys, Sophia and I get next game!" Vince shouts.
No one protests as he drags me to the floor and snatches two remote controls. He hands me a white one and he gets a black one. Looks like we are playing Game Cube. Oh awesome, I love Game Cube!
"Ever played Mario Kart before?" he asks me.
I smirk and nod. "Yes!"
"Good, now you can't use the excuse that you're a newbie when I kick your butt." He says.
I laugh, "Yeah okay, think what you want." I say and turn toward the screen.
Two other people play with us. Since we are playing Mario Kart Double Dash, I choose baby Mario and baby Luigi as my riders. They are my favorite because their special move is that giant ball with teeth and a chain!
After three games and several different competitors, I come out on top. I smile cockily as I see Vince starting to get mad. He hasn't been able to beat me and it is hilarious!
The way they play is that the winner gets to stay and play and all the losers have to switch and let other people play. Vince played round one and lost and then played round three and lost to me again!
"Teddy, you should play against Sophia!" Someone shouts.
"Yeah! Teddy hasn't ever lost!"
I look up and see everyone staring at a kid I am assuming is Teddy. He looks to be on the nerdy side but I think I can take him. After all, I haven't lost yet either.
Teddy agrees and take the remote next to mine, he looks at me and smirks, "Good luck." he says.
I laugh, "You too."
We start the game, it is close between us the whole time. I start off in first then we continuously switch off. Eventually the last lap around the course comes. We are neck and neck, then right before I cross the finish line he uses a mushroom and bolts past me! Leaving me in second place.
I have to admit, I'm kind of upset, but that's only the competitor in me. I laugh and turn to Teddy. He smiles.
"You're good, you know, for a girl." Everyone 'oohs' at his back handed compliment and I laugh. I wouldn't have expected that from him!
"Thanks." I say as I continue to laugh.
Since I lost that means I have to switch. I stand from the ground and look around for Jayden. I see him sitting on one of the couches that is cluttered with kids. There is a small space between him and Vince so I decide I will sit in between them.
I make my way over.
"Hey guys." I say happily.
"Hey." Vince says in a sulky tone, he is still upset! It's so funny!
"You did good up there, you know until Teddy kicked your butt." Jayden says.
I laugh as I get closer, "If you consider kicking my butt beating me at the last second then yeah he kicked my butt."
I get over to the couch. Im about to sit in the small space between them. Suddenly Jayden reaches up and grabs my hips. He pulls me into his lap and I look at him surprised. Wow, I guess I'm not used to the whole 'couple thing' in public yet.
He smiles and says, "I was kidding, you were awesome."
I smirk and say, "I know."
I relax into his arms and we continue to watch Mario Kart with the rest of the kids. I never knew how fun it would be playing video games with a bunch of people. I'm glad I came.
