Chapter 21
"Manus." I whisper.
He releases a vicious growl that pierces my ears. I whimper in defeat and look into his frightening eyes. Wonderful. I've gotten this far just to be eaten by my mom's ex-lover.
He snarls at me and I take a hasty step back. Apparently he doesn't like that, and he releases another heart stopping growl.
He raises his hackles and flicks his ears back aggressively. He is in full on attack mode. I stare at him terrified. He bends down to attack me. As he goes to jump at me, I watch him, fear holding me in place.
I tell my body to move but it won't. I'm stuck. As Manus is about to sink his huge claws into me, a black blob flashes across my vision, taking Manus along with it.
I hear a loud whimper pierce through the air and I watch a ball of brown and black mix together. Finally, they stop turning and I notice the black wolf landed victoriously on top of Manus.
Manus is one of the biggest wolves I have seen, and to watch him be over powered is amazing, although it's probably just due to the surprise aspect of the attack. It must have thrown Manus off guard. The black wolf moves to strike Manus's neck, only, it's too slow. Manus sends it flying. It lands against the building with a thud and falls to the floor in a heap. I stare amazed as the black wolf slowly gets to his feet and finally looks up at Manus.
That's when I see it. The familiarity of the emerald green eyes shining in the moonlight. That's not any black wolf, that's Jayden.
Manus lets out a vicious snarl and gets ready to charge at Jayden who is already weakened. My heart pumps wildly. I can't let this happen, if Manus is successful in attacking him now that Jayden's weak, the outcome doesn't look good.
Manus bends his legs, preparing to attack. He then springs at Jayden with full force. I feel my heart sink to my stomach, I need to act now.
"No!" I shout and run in between Jayden and Manus.
I expected the impact to be strong, I definitely expect it to nearly kill me. What I didn't expect was opening my eyes and seeing Manus tackled to the floor by two more wolves. A brown one similar to my own, with sparkly blue eyes, and a light brown one. Mom and Will.
Mom looks at me and I know what she wants. She wants me to leave. I nod quickly and look up toward the roof.
To my dismay, Georgia is gone. Where did she go? I look around for her but I don't see anyone in human form besides myself.
I feel a nudge on my bare arm. I jump at first from surprise. Then I notice the sparks trickle through my body. I turn and lock eyes with Jayden.
So many emotions flash through me; happiness, fear, joy, relief, love. I can't contain my tears as they start to spill from my eyes. I hear a small whimper as Jayden bring his giant snout to my face and wipes the tears with his slimy nose. I laugh because it helped none, he just made my face more wet.
I reach up and wipe my tears with my wrists and Jayden motions toward his back. At first I'm confused, but when I see him bend down, I know he wants me to get on.
I don't argue with him and quickly hurdle his back like a horse. I grab onto the ruff of his fur and soon we are off. He sprints into the woods full force and I have to dig my head into his fur so that I can breathe.
A sense of safety flows over me and I smile into Jayden's fur. I intake his smell and enjoy his presence around me. He came to my rescue. Even if I didn't deserve it...
Fear hits me just then, shattering my happy little world. I have to tell him. He needs to know about Manus. Even if he won't want to talk or even look at me, he needs to know.
Would it be better if he didn't know? We could continue our lives that we had before this, as if nothing ever happened. A part of my head begs me not to tell him. I know he will be disgusted, who wouldn't be? So why bother, right? Then there is a part of my heart that tells me I need to tell him, I won't be able to love him the same if I don't. Even if I don't tell him, it could be possible that he has already chosen Ashley over me.
I don't know how long I'm on his back before I feel him slow down, but I wish that I was able to stay secure on here longer. I look up and notice that we are in the woods near Will's mansion. I'm glad Jayden took me here. I need a familiar place to be in right now. I'm unstable and I probably need to lie down.
As we approach the tree line he continues to walk me toward the house. When we get to the back door I hop off of his back and turn the door handle. I walk into the house and Jayden follows. At first I question why he is still in wolf form, then I realize it is because he doesn't have clothes.
I watch as he casually lets himself up the stairs. I don't bother following him. I'm sure he can sniff out some of Will's clothes. I sigh and look around me.
The familiar big kitchen brings me comfort. I walk toward a drawer and fish out a pair of scissors. Before I do anything, I need to get these handcuffs off.
I sit down at the kitchen taxable. At first I try to stick one of the scissor blades into the key hole but it is too big. I let out an annoyed sigh. Then I try to cut the metal, but that appears to be of no use either.
"Having trouble?"
I jump in my seat and the scissors fly out of my hands and fall to the floor with a thump. I quickly hold my hand to my heart and allow it to return to its normal beat. When I finally look up I see Jayden watching me carefully, almost apologetically as he places the fallen scissors onto the counter.
"Soph are you alrigh-"
"Yes I'm fine." I state quickly, trying to cover up my easily frightened state. "I just can't get these off..."
I glance down at the stubborn little handcuffs and hold them up to Jayden. He smirks and walks over to me.
"Here let me give it a go." He says.
I roll my eyes and say, "Okay Jayden, you can try but trust me, these suckers have been stuck on me all day, they are nearly impossible to-"
My rant is quickly cut off by the sound of snapping metal. I look down and see one wrist freed. He moves to the next. By using his own strength, he is able to snap the cuffs.
I stare at him amazed.
"Well... okay then." I say.
I had no idea Jayden was that strong. Are all werewolves like that or just Alpha's and their kids? Either way, I'm jealous. If I had that strength I could have been out of these cuffs weeks ago.
Jayden runs a hand through his hair and looks at me. Worry shows clear in his eyes. I wonder what is going through that head of his. He looks so confused.
"What are you thinking about?" I ask quietly.
"Why can't I mind link you?"
I stare at him for a moment. I figured it was because of the distance. Or even because I was surrounded by another pack. I blink a few times and try to mind link him.
'Can you hear me now?' I ask.
Nothing.
Fear hits me hard. Why is this happening? I'm so confused... I thought that they couldn't hear me because I was so far away. Am I defective?
"Why isn't it working!?" I ask and look at Jayden shocked.
He gives me an odd look and says, "Are you saying this is the first time you have tried to mind link us?"
"No, I just figured the distance stopped me from being able to communicate." I say worriedly.
"Soph, mind link isn't like phoning someone, it's different, it doesn't matter how far you are from us, you always get perfect connection."
So this whole time I have been disconnected from them. I wonder why? I need to figure it out, what could Manus have done to stop me from being able to talk to my pack?
I shake my head and say, "I think I need a snack."
I stand up and head over to the fridge. I need something to get my mind off of things. I open the door and look around at the selection of food available. I see some yogurt behind the milk, I reach out and push the milk away. Suddenly images flash through my head.
Images of the last time I was in this house. Images of all my groceries and the intruder. I quickly release the milk and take a step back.
No Soph, don't think about it. It's over. They won't come again.
As much as I tell this to myself, my heart continues to pound in my chest. I shakily shut the fridge. I need to lie down.
I walk away from the kitchen and toward my stairs. I just need a nap, to get away from things. No intruder is going to come get me anymore.
Suddenly I hear a creaking noise from behind me. My heart jumps. As I turn someone reaches out and grabs my arm. I let out a small whimper and shut my eyes.
"Sophie." A gentle voice asks.
I open my eyes and see Jayden holding onto my wrist. I see hurt written all over his face as he looks at me shocked. He slowly lets go of me. I feel tears linger in my eyes. I hurt him. I know I will hurt him more if I tell him the truth too. He can't be near me, all I've been bringing him is pain.
"I'm sorry." I whisper and run up the stairs.
I head straight for my room and don't turn back once. I lock my door and slowly wander over to my bed. Lying down, I wrap my blanket around myself, and look out my balcony window. I see the moon shine down at me and I finally let all the tears fall.
I've done the one thing that I never wanted to do. Hurt my mate. I want what's best for him. Even if that's not me.
