Chanyeol arrives at the camp site to find that most of the others had already arrived and were setting up their tents. He sees Baekhyun with Junmyeon and figures that that his ex-boyfriend's probably sleeping with his ex-boyfriend and— maybe if Jinah's there— his ex-girlfriend, too.
Fucking hell.
Kicking his motorcycle stand down, Chanyeol walks over to Sehun and tosses his backpack on the ground. "Do you need help with the tent?"
He just needs a fucking distraction. Without even looking, he can tell that Baekhyun's looking over in his direction.
"I think I can do it by myself." Sehun's confident he can build the tent, even if it's taking a while. "Maybe you can go help Jongin with fishing! Taemin couldn't make it, so he's being bummy by the river!"
Scoffing, Chanyeol looks up and--sure enough--Jongin's sitting by the water bank... fishing.
"Fine."
Walking over, Chanyeol joins Jongin by the river, pulling out a half-used pack of cigarettes from his back pocket.
When Jongin sees the cancer pack, he gasps and stands up. Swiping the pack away, he holds it safely in his hand. "Baekhyun's going to get mad!"
"Hand it over."
"Your lungs, bro!" Shaking his head, Jongin hands over the pack. "You stress and you smoke? You die!"
"I'll worry about that when I'm dead."
"But you'd be dead!"
"And?" Chanyeol puts a single stick in his mouth and lights it up. "Catch anything yet?"
"No. But it's okay. Minseok said he was bringing his chef! His RV should be here soon!"
"So we're all sleeping in damn tents except him."
"Yeah-- Hey, do you have a tent buddy yet? Uh, I'm kind of alone!" Jongin looks off into the distance. "Taemin says he couldn't get out of work."
"Sorry. I'm already sharing with Sehun."
"But—"
"Hey!" Rushing over, Baekhyun's quick to pull the cigarette out of Chanyeol's mouth. "You can't smoke here! You'll make a forest fire— and I don't want to kiss you if you smoke or make forest fires!"
Chanyeol takes back the stick. "Good." He puts it back in his mouth. "Go mind your own business."
Coughing awkwardly, Jongin tries to make light of the situation. "Hey, Baekhyun! Do you wanna be my tent buddy? I'm—"
"No, not good! How are you going to win me back if you make yourself, like, not kissable?" Baekhyun turns to Jongin. "Sorry, Nini. I'm already with—"
"I wasn't planning on getting anything back."
Except his job.
But Chanyeol doesn't say that part.
Baekhyun presses his lips together. "Really."
"Really."
Jongin coughs again. "Damn, maybe I should ask Sehun or something—" Putting his fishing rod on the ground, he points over to Sehun even though the other two aren't paying much attention to him. "Uh, I'll be right back!"
As Jongin runs off, Chanyeol looks out over the water and scoffs. "Can you just give up already? For fuck's sake."
"Can you give up? For fudge's sake." Baekhyun reaches out for the cigarette again but Chanyeol's quick to dodge him. "You still love me."
"What makes you think so?"
Baekhyun looks at him... Still and silent— for a brief moment.
"Because I had a sexy fuck with Jon."
The expression on Chanyeol's face falters— long enough for Baekhyun to notice.
"See? The idea bothers you!"
"It doesn't."
"It does. You won't even make eye contact with me anymore!" Baekhyun points out.
But Chanyeol has a reason.
"Maybe it's cause you're ugly."
"Then Jon had a sexy fuck with a really ugly, sexy boy."
Annoyed, Chanyeol takes the cigarette and stomps it out with his feet. "Listen—"
Straightening his posture, Baekhyun raises his head. "Listening."
Chanyeol checks fo see if the others were minding their own fucking business. By the looks of it, they all seemed preoccupied.
"I'm seeing someone," Chanyeol starts. He can see immediately that Baekhyun's now upset. "Someone who isn't 5,000 miles away."
"Well, duh! You see me right now. I'm right here."
"You know what the fuck I mean."
"No, I don't." Baekhyun crosses his arms. "I said, I'm right here."
Fucking hell...
"And when summer's over? Then what?" Chanyeol hates being reminded of the seasons. Stupid shit always changes. "Back to disappointing you every time I can't do something right all the way here in Korea? Again?"
"You never constantly disappoint me—"
"Whatever. I already told you I'm done. This long-distance shit's too hard to be worth it."
The gangster turns to start walking back to the main camp site but Baekhyun bends over and picks up a stick. Then he throws it at the back of the latter's head. "It's not supposed to be easy, stupid!"
Whipping around, Chanyeol holds back. "And it's not supposed to make you fucking miserable either."
Memories of that damn memo on the runt's phone come flooding back.
Fuck.
"Just because I don't like long-distance, it doesn't mean I don't like you." Baekhyun's starting to sound... annoyed. "Trying to ignore you is really hard, you know. I tried for, like, five seconds, but—"
"Or you can move on. It's been six months."
Baekhyun stops, shoulders slumped as he watches the gangster walk away. "You probably still do the winky dink by yourself because you miss me."
This time, it's Chanyeol who stops. "I don't fucking do that—"
"Do what?"
"The stupid winky dink, you annoying—"
"But you did miss me. You still do." Looking pst the gangster, Baekhyun can tell the others are listening in—even if they look "busy"...
Chanyeol finds it hard to keep eye contact. He doesn't know why. It's just fucking...
Annoying.
Difficult.
He doesn't know how to fucking describe it anything but just— awful.
Slowly, he steps away from the latter and resumes walking back to the main camp ground without saying. Not because he didn't have anything else to argue back at the runt, but because Chanyeol knew that he had a losing argument.
As annoying as Baekhyun is, he was right.
