Dark Type pokemon were not introduced in the games until Generation 2 was released with the games Pokemon Gold And Silver.

Even at that time, the only Dark Type pokemon were Umbreon, Murkrow, Sneasal, and the Houndour evolution line. That means there was originally a total of only 5 Dark type pokemon.
