Chapter 8
Hinata's POV
"Hey! I'm here to help! Please stay still as I get you out of there, alright?" I yell as I approach a fallen tree, with a person trapped underneath. They wheeze out an "okay", letting me know they're still alive, and conscious.
"Alrighty, I'm gonna lift the tree with one hand, then I'll pull you out with the other. Here we go!"
I take a deep breath, holding back coughs–due to the smoke in the air–as I slowly and carefully lift the tree. Once I can clearly see that the tree is off this person's legs, I pull them out with my free hand. I put the tree down and examine the victim's body.
Now, I'm no doctor, but it is very clear that they are not walking anytime soon. But besides their broken legs and wheezing, they seem to be in stable enough condition for me to carry them away.
"Now don't worry, we'll get you away from this area and find my friend who will take you somewhere safe," I explain, carefully picking them up. I reactivate my quirk, causing my legs to bulk up, then I take off as fast as I can out of the forest.
"Mori! I'm coming back with someone else!"
We arrive at the meeting spot, which is a nice patch of grass, lucky enough to be untouched by the fire.
A loud boom echoes throughout the forest.
That sounds like thunder. I hope Jasper and Ale are alright.
A shadow glides along the ground, catching my attention.
"Oh look! My friend is here!"
Mori gracefully lands in front of us.
"He'll take good care of you!" I say, as I carefully place the person in Mori's arms.
"Any updates?" I ask.
"The first responders have finally arrived. Thanks to the triage set up by Suki and Tami, they were able to set up quickly," Mori responds.
"Are they the last one?" He asks
"Looks like it. I'm gonna head back to Ale and Jasper so we can finish this mess," I respond. As I turn around, I stumble a bit before catching myself.
"You alright? You've been running around a lot. Are you reaching your limit?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine. Just need a quick snack and I'll be good." I reach into my fanny pack, pull out a protein bar and wave it around.
Mori lifts his eyebrow, and nods. Then, with one mighty flap with his wings, he takes off into the air.
The wind from his takeoff knocks me to the ground.
"I guess I'm weaker than I thought," I mutter, sitting up and stuffing my mouth with the bar.
As much as I would love to take a break, I can't. I haven't checked in on Ale and Jasper. Ale immediately took charge of the situation, insisting Mori and I survey the area for anyone who needed help, while he and Jasper contained the villain. Mori didn't seem very happy about it, but Ale was right; Mori's and I's quirk are not properly suited to handle a villain like her. I hope they're doing alright, because I have no idea if that boom of thunder is a good thing or not.
I gulp down the bar, immediately feeling the effects.
Who says magic doesn't exist? Food is magic! At least, it is for me.
I jump to my feet, and immediately take off back into the forest.
...
"Are you catching fire? Because you make my heart melt," Ale says with a smirk as he redirects the fire blast from the villain and launches it back at her. She grins as catches the blast and holds it in her hand.
"I gotta admit: your determination is kinda cute," she says, as she converts the fire into her sword, doubling its size.
"But let's see how long you can take the heat."
She rushes straight at Ale, sword aimed at his chest. He chuckles as he steps to the side last minute and sticks his leg out, tripping her. She tumbles on the ground, leaving behind a trail of flames on the ground.
"Ay chica. Is that all you got? 'Cause that spark isn't hot enough to light a birthday candle!"
She growls as she gets to her feet. She pulls out another handle, igniting it into another blade.
"Oh, double trouble. That's hot," Ale comments, winking at the villain. She lets out a battle cry as she charges at him once again. Her fiery hair grows bigger and brighter as she slashes at Ale.
Ale dodges her attacks, responding with fiery kicks and punches. However, his attacks seem to do minimal damage as the fire doesn't hurt her at all. It appears to be at a stalemate, as they continue to exchange blows. However, Ale begins to tire first, as the villain begins to land her attacks, leaving various cuts and burns along his limbs and torsos.
"As much as you love the heat, it looks like you got a limit," she comments. "Unlike me, because I am the heat!" The villain brings her two blades together, then launches a big blast at Ale.
"No!" I yell, watching as the blast engulfs my friend. Instinctively, I grab the closest thing and throw it at her, which happens to be a log. The blast must've taken a lot out of her, as she does nothing as the log collides into her, knocking her into a tree. I rush towards Ale, but come to a stop as the smoke thickens. My eyes burn, irritated from the smoke as I attempt to call out to my friend. I try my best to listen in between coughs, but there is no response.
No. This can't be happening!
"Ale! Say something!"
"Bro, can you cut it out? You're killing the vibe."
As the smoke slowly clears, Ale comes into view. He has his forearms up, shaking. They took the blunt of the attack, as his skin is black, charred color.
"Yo! Are you alright?"
"Me? I'm fine! It's just a burn," Ale says, wincing as he brings his arms down.
"Just a burn? Bro, your arms have been barbecued!"
"Yeah no shit."
We both look over to the villian, who is slowly starting to get up.
"What's the plan? And where's Jasper?"
Ale doesn't respond. He looks over to the big scorch mark, in a clearing of trees.
"Wait. Don't tell me zie got—"
"What? Oh, no! Jasper's fine! Zir just waiting for my signal."
"Signal?"
"Yep, all part of the plan. We just gotta get her on that scorch mark, and I'll give the signal."
"Ok, sounds simple enough. So I'll just grab her and move her there."
"Careful. Her hair is made of fire, so she'll try to burn you. I'll try my best to keep her fire attacks under control, since I won't be wrestling anytime soon."
"Oh? You got a little friend to join the bonfire?" The villains says, igniting her blades.
"Sounds good. I trust you," I say, as I take the best breath I can within the smoke, and sprint towards our opponent. Her eyes widen as I appear right beside her in a matter of seconds.
"Sorry," I mutter as I grab her by the waist and pick her up. Immediately, my arms feel the intense heat of her skin, and feel it through my clothes.
"Put me down!" She screams as she raises her blades, ready to cut me down. But suddenly two lightning bolts from the sky from flashing down, knocking them out of her hands.
Note to remind me to thank Jasper for saving my head from being cut off.
Slowly, I begin walking towards the scorch mark, which is about fifteen feet away.
You got this!
The heat suddenly increases. I look up and see her hair has dramatically grown in size.
"Get ready to burn!"
She gestures downward, expecting the fire to come crashing down on me. Instead, all the fire from her head flies up and circles around us.
"Wow! You're still hot, even without hair!" Ale screams, as he does a circle motion with his arms.
The villain growls. She raises her fists, and begins to smack me upside the head. It catches me off guard, and I nearly fall.
Come on Hinata! Almost there! Just a few more–
The villain wraps her arms around me, choking me. Gasping for breath, I stand my ground, trying to loosen her hold. But she doesn't budge, tightening her hold.
"Hinata!" Ale yells. I know he wants to help, but he's busy keeping her fire away from her. Jasper can't send another lightning strike at me without risking taking me out as well. So I'm on my own on this one.
My vision begins to blur and my knees begin to buckle.
Damn it. Looks like she won.
Suddenly, a small gust of wind blows through the area.
That's it!
"Mori! The spot," I wheeze out, shakily pointing at the scorch mark. I can hear the leaves rustling as he dives down from the sky. He grabs us and in one swift motion, using the momentum from his dive, throws us towards the spot. I grunt, feeling the weight of the villain as we land directly in the middle, knocking the last bit of air out of me.
"Jasper! Now!"
A loud boom breaks out. Moments later, a storm breaks out, completely drenching the villain and I.
"No!" She screams, as she tries to get out of the water. But it's too late. The orange glow on her skin quickly goes black as her fire is extinguished, leaving her powerless.
The rain slowly comes to a stop, leaving me gasping for breath. The villain kneels beside me, crying.
"Oh, don't cry. You don't look as pretty when you're crying," Ale says, as he walks over to the now helpless villain. Mori and Jasper land beside us, carefully eyeing the villain. She screams, and launches herself at Ale. But he was ready, and with one swift kick to the head, she falls to the ground, unconscious.
"Are you ok?" Jasper asks, offering me a hand.
"Yeah," I wheeze, accepting zir hand as zie lift me up to my feet. Zie gently pat me on the back, helping me catch my breath.
"I'm telling Kita you were flirting with the villain," Mori states. Ale chuckles in response.
"Do it. I'm sure she'll appreciate I did everything in my power to keep her at bay. If I didn't, the fire would've..." Ale slowly trails off, stumbling to the ground.
"Oh no! His adrenaline must've worn off! He might be going into shock due to those burns!" Jasper exclaims.
"Mori! Take him to triage! Please! We'll meet you there!"
Mori lets out a sigh, and he carefully picks Ale up, and takes off into the sky.
"Uh, Hinata?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you know where the triage is? Because I don't"
"Uh, nope. But you got the compass, right? I'm sure we can figure it out!"
Jasper chuckles wearily, as zie pull out the compass and map that I completely forgot about.
Safe to say, we asked for directions as soon as we saw a first responder.
...
"Ale! You're awake!" I exclaim, giving him a big hug.
"Oye! Watch out! I got burns all over me!"
"Oops! Sorry!"
Ale lets out a deep sigh as looks around the room. He's laying on a bed under a huge tent, designated for First-Aid.
"Where is everyone else?" He asks.
"Everyone who isn't injured is out helping move civilians out of here. I just came to check up on ya'."
"Who else got hurt?"
"I–"
A few nurses walk in, with Kita and Tanami each on a stretcher.
"Oh my gosh! Are they alright?" I ask.
"They'll be fine. They just need lots of rest," a nurse answers, as they place Tanami in a bed by the entrance. Kita, however, is placed right next to Ale. I can't help but chuckle as a small smile grows on Ale's face.
"You know, I hate that she got hurt, but I can't help but think it's fate, as if we are meant to be," Ale says.
"Yeah? Or more like you're both stubborn and reckless out in the field," I says, shaking my head as I get up.
"Rest up champ," I say, patting his leg.
"Adios," Ale says, waving his bandaged arms.
Hehe. Mori is not gonna be happy when he finds out about this arrangement. But that's tomorrow's problem, after we make sure everyone in the park is safe.
