Chapter Tweleve: Suprises
"Why should I?", I blurt out.
Hannah rolled her eyes. "You can either come willingly or we will force you to and your consequences will be much worse. Your choice."
So I decided to follow them.
A few corridors and floors later, Hannah came to a stop at a turquoise door.
She opened it and pranced inside the room.
The room had fancy marble walls, a fireplace, three chairs, and a coffee table in it.
"Sit.", she ordered me like a principal to a disobedient child.
I sat. I might as well. It seems like I might be in this room a while.
"I assume you received the note. I just want to clear some things up. When I say that Will is mine, I mean that. Don't talk to him, don't look at him, don't even think about him or else I will slit your throat. Comprende?", she said, making sure I understood every word she said.
"I'm honestly not sure why you would ever think that a guy would be interested in me. I'm weird, I'm an imbecile, complete loser, remember?", I tell Hannah sarcastically.
"True. But just don't or else I will ruin your existence. I am not going to take your cute little relationship with him as something harmless. I am dead serious little Orphan Annie.", she replies, obviously not detecting my sarcasm.
In my mind I think up a snarky reply but instead say, "I promise I will not kiss him and or become his significant other." What do I have to lose. It's not like I'd be willing to do anything with Will anyways.
But I guess I forgot that Will had already kissed me at that one party. But nobody said anything at the moment.
Before Hannah could reply, her iPhone rang.
"A party at Jake's... Sure... Be there in five.", she told the person on the other line.
"Okay. This little meeting has to end now there's a party at Jake's which we are not missing.", Hannah announces after her phone call.
Hannah stands up and Anna follows her lead. They walk out of the room and the click-clacking of their shoes begin. I get up and follow them because I don't want to get lost in this unfamiliar part of the mansion.
Right before we get to the foyer, I bound up the stairs.
"Where do you think you're going!", Hannah shouts at me from the foyer.
I stop. My room, you nasty parasite.
"You're our Designated Driver tonight!", she shouts, now at the bottom of the stairs.
You've got to be kidding me.
***
It was currently 2 in the morning, and I felt like falling asleep at the party.
Hannah was doing shots, and hanging out with this guy, who looked remotely like Brad Pitt.
Anna was no where to be seen, but I was certain that she was with Carson Bayes, her crush.
And I was leaning against a wall in the dining area, doing absolutely nothing, and wishing I was anywhere but here.
Loud music blasted through speakers in the living room, and the disgusting stench of alcohol lingered in every room.
The house at this party was not as packed with people, but was still full.
Three words to describe this moment: loud, intoxicating, obnoxious.
How is this fun to anyone? I may never know.
All at once, I felt so sick. Like I was going to vomit.
I ran outside of the house and threw my head over the porch railing. I started gagging into a shrub.
The taste of the leftover deep dish pizza we had at lunch mixed with stomach acid stayed in my mouth.
I stood back on my feet and wiped away vomit from my mouth.
Gosh I hate parties.
I sat down on the stairs of the front porch and closed my eyes, listening from the music blaring out of the speakers from inside the house.
Why is Hannah so damn protective over Will? Will's so awful. Why would she even think I would go for Will or something? I mean, look at all the trouble he has caused. Tabitha, John's friendship, Jack's dad's job. And not to mention, he's the school's player, and a bit of a bad boy.
Not my kind of life. My life is staying inside on the weekends as I do homework or read a book. My life is going to bed at ten o'clock on the weekends. My life is ignoring all attention, from the male or female gender. And sitting alone on the porch steps of a complete stranger's house at a high school party with alcohol that I will never drink as music blares through speakers is not my life!
What the hell am I doing?
I was just about to drift off into sleep when the front door swung open.
"I've been looking for you everywhere.", Hannah screeches drunkly.
I stand up and look at her.
Hannah's hair was messy and her shirt slid down a little on the shoulder, showing her bra strap.
"I wanna go home!", Hannah wailed in my ear. I rolled my eyes.
"Okay. I am going to find Anna. Stay here and don't move.", I say, disappearing into the house.
I wove through the crowd of people and made my way to the backdoor where I saw Anna disappear through about an hour ago.
I walked out the back door and onto the lawn.
It was still dark outside even though it was already the a.m..
Christmas lights lit up the backyard, and empty beer cans littered the lawn.
I saw Anna talking to a handsome boy with light chestnut hair, and light brown eyes.
I walked over to Anna and the boy who I supposed was Carson Bayes: Anna's crush.
"Hey Anna. We need to go. Hannah is drunk and wants to leave.", I tell her, crossing my arms self consciously. Meeting these popular kids gets me nervous.
Anna looks at me and gives me a light smile.
Carson looks me up and down, obviously judging me, and frowns.
"This is my foster sister, Kendall. Kendall, this is Carson.", Anna says bubbly. Must be from whatever's in the cup she's holding.
"Nice to meet you.", Carson said plainly, obviously not thrilled to meet me, as he shook my hand.
"You too.", I say, surprised Anna was being nice-ish to me. But it was probably the alcohol.
"I have to go. I'll see you later Carson.", She says, giving him a small wave and a flirtatious smile.
"Bye.", Carson said, giving her a small wave and looking at me strangely, the judging look. Again.
Then Anna walked back into the house.
I followed her, anxious to leave.
We walked out the front door and found Hannah snoring on the steps of the porch.
We both giggled.
Usually Hannah was so powerful and angry. It was funny seeing her so defenseless and calm, snoring in her sleep.
We both grabbed one of her arms and dragged her to the car.
Based off of the fact that Anna is walking in a straight line, she might not be drunk. Hopefully she's not.
Anna helped me buckle her in the back seat.
Then we both got in and I started to drive toward the house.
"I'm sorry.", Anna blurted out, after several minutes of silence.
"Why?", I asked, confused.
"For being so rude, for Hannah, for everything.", She said, looking directly at me.
I shrugged.
"It's fine. People are like that with me all the time.", I admitted, thinking about all the times I was bullied when I lived with Gran in Denver.
"No. It's not. Hannah treats everyone like crap, and no one does anything about it.", Anna said angrily.
"I don't want to be her little sidekick. The one that no one even remembers the name of. I am not like that.", She says, frowning.
I understand what she is saying.
"Then don't. Don't hang out with her. Be your own person.", I say, hoping my advice is good, although it was so cheesy.
"It's not that simple.", Anna replies, looking out the window.
I decide not to ask what she meant about "it not being that simple." She could tell me if she wanted to.
"Think about it.", I reply, parking the car in one of the several garages.
After that, Anna helped me carry Hannah up the stairs, and into her room.
"Thanks for helping me.", I say, after we finished tucking Hannah into her sheets.
"No problem. I'm going to go to bed.", Anna said, yawning.
"Me too. Goodnight Anna.", I said, making my way to the exit of her room.
"Goodnight Kendall.", She said.
After that, I fell asleep onto my bed before I could even take off my shoes.
It sure was a long day.
***
"Kendall? Are you still sleeping?", Asked a smooth voice from inside my bedroom.
I peeked open my eyes to find John standing above me.
I groaned.
"It's way to early to get up.", I mumbled from underneath the blankets.
"It is two o'clock in the afternoon.", John said, laughing at me. "And we have plans.", He added.
At the sound of "WE have plans" I sat up in my bed.
Then I remembered that during the summer, we planned on going out every weekend, so we could stay in touch, and not drift apart. As friends of course.
"That's right.", I said, remembering. "Give me an hour to get ready.", I added, standing up, and beginning my usual morning routine.
"Okay. Come get me when you're ready. I'll be in my room.", John said, exiting my room.
I got ready in a flash.
I showered, and dressed in a pretty floral print shirt, some jeans, and my converses. I fishtail braided my hair to the side and grabbed my bag.
I knocked on John's door, to signal that I was ready.
John walked out of his room looking smoking hot.
His perfect hair was combed to side, he was wearing a surfing tee that you could see his abs through. He was wearing shorts and Sperry's boat shoes.
"Ready?", John asked me.
"Yep.", I breathed, trying to hide the fact that I was totally checking him out. It's a good thing that he was oblivious.
John and I got into the car and started driving into town.
"Where do you want to go eat? Sharon's Gourmet Soups and Sandwiches, or the Seaside Cafe?", John asked me.
"Seaside Cafe.", I answered immediately.
I really needed some caffeine.
"Okey Dokey.", John said, navigating the streets.
We pulled up to the Seaside Cafe and John parked the car.
The Seaside Cafe was a quaint little cafe just next to the beach. It was cozy and welcoming inside. And they served excellent coffee, latees, and muffins. Especially muffins.
As John and I walked in the cafe, the bell rang, signaling our arrival.
"Good afternoon. What can I get you?", The lady said from behind the counter.
"One medium coffee and two blueberry muffins please.", John ordered.
As we were paying for the food, the bell rang, signaling another persons arrival.
John and I turned around to find something shocking.
Jack was standing there with a pretty blonde blue eyed girl.
"Jack?", I asked, in surprise.
"Kendall.", Jack replied, sounding startled.
"Tabitha?!", John exclaimed, surprising us both.
The girl Jack was with replied.
"John!", The girl shrieked with recognition.
"Kendall, I'd like you to meet Tabitha.", John says ecstatically.
That was when it finally clicked who that girl was.
She was Tabitha.
