Part 55
I kept on staring at my watch every few seconds, I had to check in at the airport soon and I was still waiting for Arnav to show up for a final goodbye, I had texted him that I was leaving and he promised he would come see me but he wasn't here yet and I didn't know if he was actually going to show up or not.
"Hey, what are you waiting for?" Ved asked.
"Arnav, he said he will come say goodbye but he isn't here yet." I pouted.
"Oh okay. The rest of us are heading in, should I wait or you'll join us?"
"I'll join you guys in a while, make sure I don't miss the flight though." I joked.
"I hope you do, that way I'll know things finally worked out." He laughed as he walked away, only if he knew, things had worked out.
Arnav and I were in a space where we were happy like this, sometimes it wasn't falling in love, sometimes it was falling out of love that brought you peace, and we both had that right now, all we had between us was friendship only.
I looked at all my friends that were heading inside and here I was, waiting for Arnav, if I didn't see him today, I had no idea when I was going to see him again.
I looked around and finally spotted him running towards me, he was holding a flower bouquet in his hand, he stopped opposite me and inhaled a few deep breaths then smiled.
"I am so sorry, I was stuck in a meeting, I rushed as soon as I could." He apologized as he handed me the flowers.
"It's okay, as long as you're here now." I smiled.
"So... you're finally heading home. I hope you won't be a stranger once you're back."
"I hope you won't be a stranger either, I am willing to work on the friendship part like we discussed so stay in touch okay?"
"Of course, I'll send you pictures of me having fun in Paris, you'll be so jealous." He laughed.
"Mean." I pouted, he finally looked at bit serious, it was like reality was setting in.
"It was nice bumping into you after so long Khushi..." he said as he pulled me in for a hug, I wrapped my arms around him and held on to him, being in his arms always felt so good, I really couldn't describe what exactly it made me feel but it was always so good.
We pulled apart from the hug after a while and just looked at each other with stupid smiles on our faces.
"Don't forget to invite me when you get married." He laughed.
"I could say the same but I doubt that will happen for you."
"Mean!"
"Just like you." And once again we ended up laughing like crazy, that was until my phone beeped, I looked at it and it was a text from Ved telling me to hurry up.
"I should get going."
"Yeah, otherwise you'll miss your flight. I'll see you when I come back to India or in case you decide to visit Paris for your honeymoon or something." He laughed.
"Such an idiot! Bye." I frowned at him.
"Bye, take good care of yourself."
"You too." I waved goodbye at him as I finally walked inside, while at the entrance the security guy checked my passport and everything I turned to look at him one last time, he was still standing there and as soon as our eyes met, we smiled at each other once again.
This was it, I was going back, and I had no idea when I was going to see him again, I knew I was going to miss being around him, but it didn't really hurt, because deep down we both knew this was how it was supposed to be.
*****
"I really thought you guys would actually end up together, I mean you know how in the movies you can just see how two people are meant for each other and somehow they find a way together, I thought this was your way together, I'm surprised it wasn't like that." Ved said once the plane took off.
"Sometimes thing aren't what they look like Ved, you can never really know if people are meant to be together or not, it's usually just a guess, but we didn't find a way back to our friendship didn't we, so I can it's not always about love, sometimes it's about friendships too." I smiled.
"So unromantic." He rolled his eyes at me.
"Shut up, deep down you're glad that Arnav and I aren't together, otherwise that little heart of yours would be broken." I slapped on his arms.
"You think you really know me don't you?" He rolled his eyes at me.
"Definitely."
"Just because I told you I still liked you doesn't mean I'm dying to be with you." He made faces at me.
"Good, I don't want to feel the need to reciprocate it." I laughed.
"I hate you so much I swear."
"It's okay, I love me and that's enough."
"Where did this mature Khushi suddenly come from?"
"From making peace with my life, you should try it, it's liberating."
"I'm liberated enough, I've liked you for four years now and I've made peace with the fact that you would never like me back, so I'm more mature than you." He smirked.
"Jeez, you're such an idiot." I rolled my eyes at him which just made him laugh.
I sighed as I leaned on my seat comfortably and looked out the window, and slowly, I drifted into sleep.
*****
It seemed like forever, the journey back home was too long and too tiring, I just wanted to get home and lie down on my bed until I felt I had rested enough.
"Go home and rest, I'll see you tomorrow?" Ved asked.
"Sure, all I can think of right now is my bed anyway." I laughed. I got a cab to take me home as I bid all my friends goodbye, it was such a nice trip and we all had so much fun but now, we were back to reality.
As soon as I got into the cab and instructed the driver where to take me, my phone rang, I looked at the screen and smiled seeing Arnav's name flashing on it.
"Were you timing me?" I asked immediately after receiving the call.
"You can say so... Wanted to make sure you reached safely." He said.
"I did, it was a long journey though. I love travelling but the part I hate about it is the time I have to spend sitting in a plane so I could get to the destination." I laughed.
"It's okay, you can rest now that you're home."
"I'm still in the cab though, I'll get home in a couple minutes and then rest... tell me, does Paris miss us?" I giggled.
"It looks like it, it's been raining for a while now." He laughed.
"Good to know, we were pretty fun, I'm sure we're missed." I laughed too.
There was a long silence after that, it seemed like neither of us knew what else to talk about, I just looked outside and felt frustrated at the traffic because it was going to take forever for me to reach home.
"Can I say something?" I asked.
"Sure, anything."
"When I met you, all my friends and even I at some point thought you would try to convince me to get back with you or something." I laughed.
"Did you want me to try?" He asked.
"No, I'm glad you didn't and you had a different outlook at the situation between us. I think that's why I agreed on us being friends again."
"Good, I think friendship is our thing, we tried the whole love thing and look at what it did to us, being friends was so easy wasn't it?"
"It was, it feel easy even now, like I don't have to make any effort, it just flows, I like it this way."
"Me too. So cheer to us for going back where we began from, we went in full circle."
"I know right." We both laughed about it.
