Chapter Thirteen
Today was an exciting day.
Well, not just today.
This weekend.
Every year, Jonah hosted this whole thing that lasted for a full weekend in which he invited loads of people. Depending on the year, he tended to switch it up. Last year, it'd been a camping trip near the Niagara Falls. The year before that, a wild weekend in Vegas (I did not attend that one and am very glad I didn't). I'd honestly totally forgotten the event was coming up until now.
I guess a small part of me, a very, very small part of me was excited because Jonah had of course invited Kyle this year. I mean it wasn't a big deal for me. It wasn't like we were best friends or anything.
But...I don't know. I just liked talking to him.
I smiled to myself at the thought as I opened drawers and pulled out random outfits. Already, my floor was littered with tons of shirts, pants, skirts, and pretty much anything else you could wear. I had a lot. I wouldn't necessarily consider myself materialistic but having so much money made it so tempting to spend it.
I winced. Even just thinking that made me feel like a horrible person.
As if I wasn't horrible enough, muttered the dark guilt-tripping voice in the back of my mind.
I shook my head as if it'd erase the thoughts. I needed to forget about all of that. This would be a weekend where I didn't have to think about any supernatural abilities.
I didn't need to worry about the note, the weird bathroom vision from the club, or anything else. This weekend was for solely having fun.
It was also for getting a chance to talk to Kyle Hunt again.
The boy who I'd screwed over, whispered that voice again.
I was very tempted to punch myself in the face.
Anyway, I hadn't seen Kyle Hunt since his press conference, which had been just a week ago. For the past week, nothing too exciting had happened. No other cryptic notes. No shopping for cute outfits to impress people. Even Jonah had been relatively absent due to his planning for the weekend.
I didn't know where we were going. Actually, nobody did. He was keeping it a surprise. Apparently, everyone was supposed to just meet at this random address in the middle of Vermont. I was riding with Jonah, of course, because it wasn't like I really had anyone else to go with.
If Jonah wasn't the ones hosting these things, I probably wouldn't be going at all.
I sighed and chucked another dress over my shoulder into the "maybe" pile. It was so hard to decide what to keep and what not to. I wanted to bring everything just in case. I was definitely one of those people - an over-packer who couldn't help but think of every possible situation. What if we end up going swimming even though it's freezing out and we'd be in Vermont? Who knows what could happen?
Just as I chucked another dress over my shoulder, I heard my front door open downstairs. I rolled my eyes. Of course, Jonah had to be here to help me pack. He was definitely going to just complain the whole time that I didn't need all of this and then raid my fridge.
"Jonah! If you help me pack, we can make nachos afterwards!" I shouted down the stairs, still clutching a flowery shirt in my fist. It was a little odd that it was taking him so long to barge up the stairs to my room.
I heard someone curse.
Someone who was definitely not Jonah.
My heart stopped.
My mind went into full on panic mode. I'd never been robbed. That was one of the good things about lying low - you weren't a target. Even so, I was here now. And there was somebody in my house who was most definitely not supposed to be there.
I quickly ran to the closet in my room and switched on the light. There had to be something I could use as a weapon. It wasn't like I had a gun or something to scare whoever it was off with.
Adrenaline pounded through my veins. What if they were coming upstairs? What if they'd kill me just to shut me up while they stole everything in my house?
And how'd I forget the most obvious thing to do in this situation?
I quickly dialed 9-1-1, trying not to panic as I grabbed a coat hanger. No, I did not think it'd help me defend myself in the slightest. Was it better than nothing? I guess.
I whispered out my address for the police as I approached my bedroom door carefully. I couldn't hear anything else from downstairs. It was quite possible whoever it was left the second they heard me. I couldn't even remember if I'd heard the door shut a second time, I'd been so panicked.
As I glanced down the stairs, I saw something that shocked me.
Sitting on the bottom of the staircase was a simple white envelope, much like the one from a week or so ago. I placed my phone down on the dresser and slowly, took the stairs. As I peeked around the corner, I couldn't find a single person anywhere - not in the kitchen or living room. Whoever it was, was definitely gone. And it seemed they'd left this note for me.
They hadn't been there to rob me.
Just to send a message.
I picked it up with shaky fingers but didn't open it. I didn't have the courage to. Instead, I took a deep breath and shoved it in my pocket as I heard police sirens.
Whatever was going on...somebody obviously wanted my attention. And even though it took every ounce of my soul to not open that letter, I knew I couldn't.
Somebody was playing games with me.
And I wasn't interested in joining them.
