Chapter Eleven

I wasn't capable of reading Jonah's mind, but sometimes I wish I could.

Now was especially one of those times.

"What the hell are we doing in a mall? And how does this relate to Kyle Hunt in any way, shape or form?"

Jonah just grinned at me from underneath his obnoxiously large gray fedora. That was a whole other deal - since he was technically well-known, he always wore some sort of disguise whenever we went out. In all honesty, people didn't recognize him that often, unless they were super into business. Most people only cared about the celebrities who were in fashion, music and acting.

Despite my complaints that Jonah simply looked more conspicuous, he couldn't help but where his fedora and black leather jacket every time we left for a public place such as this.

"How do I look?" he murmured, glancing around as if someone would suddenly become suspicious of him.

"As weird as always," I replied, rolling my eyes. "And you never answered my question."

"Shh, my young Padawan. You'll find out soon enough. Now lead me to your womanly stores."

I let out a groan, already not liking how this was going. Sure, I loved shopping. I loved trying on tons of new clothes and buying whatever I pleased. I just happened to do it alone most of the time because Jonah could sometimes be a pain in the ass when it came to buying things.

Last time I'd dragged him to the mall with me, he'd forced me to try on everything in the store. I wasn't sure if it was me deciding on a dress or him.

"Look, if the point of this is to use me as your dress-up doll, I am one hundred percent not down. I could be getting a lot more done back at my office with my papers where I'm actually needed."

Jonah gave me a pouty, puppy-dog face. "But I need you."

I sighed and began marching towards the nearest staircase. We were on the bottom level of the mall, little groups of teens and families swerving around the two of us to get to their destinations. It was relatively crowded today. I forced Jonah up the stairs while he complained that there was an elevator "literally ten feet away," and stopped outside the first store I could think of. Forever 21.

Jonah smiled to himself and patted me on the shoulder. "Good work, my friend. Now...it's time to get started."

I think I lost track of time.

I sped through outfit after outfit, getting Jonah's approval on every last one. From miniskirts to cocktail dresses, I stopped counting how many things I was trying on. I was only forced out when the store employee started to get pissed off about how Jonah kept sneaking in more outfits for me. I still had no idea why he was doing this.

Somehow, we settled on a body-hugging sequined green cocktail dress. When I asked Jonah what purpose it held, he simply smirked at me. I ended up buying it anyway. What could I say? It was cute.

The rest of our day passed with me leading Jonah to a few other stores to get some heels, makeup, jewelry...

I guess I was noticing a theme. The only thing I could imagine all this being used for would be a wild night of clubbing.

Finally, we managed to escape the mall, holding multiple bags filled with clothes. Jonah had chucked a couple of his own items in there, too. As I got into the driver's seat of my black BMW and dumped my bags on Jonah's lap, I looked at him.

"What?" he asked, eyebrows raised.

"I still don't understand what any of this has to do with Kyle."

He shifted in his seat so he was facing me. He had this weird devilish smirk on his face. "Well..."

"Yeah??"

"Don't kill me."

Oh god. "Jonah, tell me why I need a clubbing dress. Are we going partying?"

"You looked really hot in it so..."

"Jonah!"

He pushed the bags off his lap and onto the back seat. "Okay, okay. Kyle Hunt is hosting a press conference for his thing he released today and I'm taking you as my plus one. And I saw the way you and Kyle were canoodling yesterday, so...I wanted to do something nice and make you look hot for his party."

My eyes nearly bugged out of my head. I was so glad I hadn't already started the car. "Excuse me?!"

Jonah just laughed. "Please, he's cute and you now it!"

I didn't even know what to say. "No. Just no."

"I know you want him."

"No, I do not," I replied, firmly. I did not feel like having this conversation.

"But wouldn't it be nice to..."

I cut Jonah off. "Okay, how about no! I'm not going. Ever."

He went quiet for a moment, but I could see him smiling out of the corner of my eye as I backed out of the parking space. He kept glancing at me as if he knew something I didn't.

Finally, I couldn't take his absolute silence anymore. "Fine. I'll go. But only if we sit in the back."
