THIRTY-ONE » THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Numb.

That was the only thing Kasey could feel in that moment.

What else were you supposed to be feeling when your brother in law was lying dead and cold in a closed casket?

Pain? Sadness? Anger? Confusion? Kasey couldn't feel any of that.

Adrienne and Elias were sitting in the pew in front of her with Anton's parents, while Kasey, Morgan, Joey, and their parents were sitting directly behind them. Friends and more family of Anton's including former costars surrounded them in the church.

The silence throughout the room was damn near deafening as no one had anything to say. How do you explain a freak accident like this? You don't. It was purely a tragedy. Only someone as good as him could die so young from something so preventable.

The preacher entered the sanctuary and began the solemn service. Kasey tuned out the majority of the funeral, trying her hardest to tune everything out without looking like she was trying.

Standing at the end of the line of family members that were being greeted at the end of the funeral, Kasey observed the field of people at the burial sight. Family members she didn't know were departing solemnly, friends she knew and didn't know had stayed to offer words of encouragement and well wishes to the rest of the family.

Kasey glanced over at Adrienne and almost cringed in pain. Elias was crying uncontrollably, and her makeup was beginning to run down her face for the umpteenth time that day. How Adiy was going to go on from here, she didn't know. Eventyally, she gave up and cried in their parents arms, handing Elias to Joey, who was standing quietly next to her.

Kasey gave up standing in one spot and went to go look at the lowered casket one last time. The sight was so gut wrenching that she wanted to throw up right there.

The auburn casket covered in the same flowers Adrienne used at their courthouse wedding was lowered all the way into the grave that had been dug up. Kasey's shaking hands wiped a few tears from her eyes. She'd never hear his voice again, never hear him laugh, or see him smile. And no one would ever be the same without him. An arm around her shoulder startled Kasey away from her thoughts. She looked up from the casket and saw Karl standing next to her. He too was very upset and shaken.

"I'm so sorry." Were the only words he could muster up to speak. And those were the only words it took at that point to make her break down completely. Kasey buried her face into Karl's chest and cried as hard as her body let her. Karl could only pull her even closer, tucking her head under his chin and rubbing her back gently.
