You must choose the one which you think fits best. For each question, 21 to 25, indicate the letter A, B, C or D against the number of the question.

Walt Whitman, born in New York, in 1819, was one of America's unusual literary figures. As an individualist, he rambled through the countryside seeing people and places, and making them his own. His experiences in earning a living were varied; at times he was a printer, a teacher, a carpenter, a nurse and a newspaper editor. He was a big-hearted man, open and accepting. He gave freely of his time by caring for the wounded during the Civil War. Though he lived in the city, he often spent time in the country, developing his strong sense of nature, which carried through out his poems. In 1855 he collected the verses he had written, and published them in one thin volume, "Leaves of Grass", a book which he revised and rewrote all the rest of his life. The book was ridiculed by some poets and generally ignored by others, probadly because his verse forms were not traditional. He had felt that it was necessary to achieve a new poetic form in order to communicate his views. His reputation didn't grow until after his death, and it reached a high point in the 1920s. Since then, Whitman's style has greatly influenced modern poets.

COMPOSITION

Television is a very popular means of communication as it is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world.

It entertains us with dances, plays and songs. It helps to widen our knowledge with its instructive talk shows, news programmes and documentary films. It is also used for educational purposes, especially in remote areas where there are no schools and teachers.

However, television also has disadvantages. Many children are so interested in watching TV that they neglect their studies. Besides, not all TV programmes are good. Some of the films which are shown on television encourage violence and sexuality. They have bad influence on small children and teenagers.

Since television has an extremely wide influence on the entire world, it is essential to provide as many good TV programmes as possible.

You must choose the one which you think fits best. For each question, 21 to 25, indicate the letter A, B, C or D against the number of the question.

After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, me, medicine and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from 1,5 million dollars to 2 million dollars.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges' decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes.

No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

A recent investigation by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey shows that strange animal behaviour might help predict future earthquakes.

Investigators found such occurrences in a ten-kilometre radius of the centre of a fairly recent quake. Some birds screeched and flew about wildly; dogs yelped and ran around uncontrollably.

Scientists believe that animals can perceive these environmental changes as early as several days before the disaster.

In 1976 after observing animal behaviour, the Chinese were able to predict a terrible quake. Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll at lower rate.

COMPOSITION

Dear Lan,

I have just received several photos of you and me, which were taken during your visit to my family last month. You look so young and lovely !

Some important things have happened to me since you left us to return to your hometown. I was suddenly taken ill, and it was serious enough for me to go to a doctor, who recommended a week's rest at home. I was seventeen on the day I completely recovered from my illness, so my parents held a big party for me. It was great fun, for there were many guests including several of our old friends. I am now taking a preparation course for the B-level certificate of English. I will take the exam early next month.

Thank you very much for your photos.

Please send my best wishes to your family.

Your sicerely

Sequoyah was a young Cherokee Indian, son of a white trader and an Indian woman. At an early age, he became fascinated by "the talking leaf", an expression that he used to describe the white man's written records. Although many believed this "talking leaf" to be the gift from the Great Spirit, Sequoyah refused to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the period, he was illiterate but his determination to change the situation led to the invention of a unique 86-character alphabet based on the sound patterns that he heard.

His family and friends thought him mad, but while recovering from a hunting accident, he diligently and independently set out to create a form of communication for his own people as well as for other Indians. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he had successfully developed a written language that would enable thousands of Indians to read and write.

Sequoyah's desire to preserve words and events for later generations has caused him to be remembered among the important inventors. The giant redwood trees of California, call "sequoias" in his honour, will further imprint his name in history.
