You must choose the one which you think fits best. For each question, 21 to 25, indicate the letter A, B, C or D against the number of the question.

Sequoyah was a young Cherokee Indian, son of a white trader and an Indian woman. At an early age, he became fascinated by "the talking leaf", an expression that he used to describe the white man's written records. Although many believed this "talking leaf" to be the gift from the Great Spirit, Sequoyah refused to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the period, he was illiterate but his determination to change the situation led to the invention of a unique 86-character alphabet based on the sound patterns that he heard.

His family and friends thought him mad, but while recovering from a hunting accident, he diligently and independently set out to create a form of communication for his own people as well as for other Indians. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he had successfully developed a written language that would enable thousands of Indians to read and write.

Sequoyah's desire to preserve words and events for later generations has caused him to be remembered among the important inventors. The giant redwood trees of California, call "sequoias" in his honour, will further imprint his name in history.

21) What is the most important reason that Sequoyah will be remembered?

23) What caused Sequoyah to develop his alphabet?

A/ People were writing things about him that he couldn't read.

B/ He wanted to become famous.

After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from 1,5 million dollars to 2 million dollars.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges' decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes.

No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rate; others have shared their prizes.

COMPOSITION

I am very fond of books. I enjoy reading books at weekends and whenever I have free time. I read simple English books, which help to improve my English; I also read serious Vietnamese books on general sciences to widen my knowledge. Through these good books, I can learn a great deal more about human civilization, the wonders of nature, and amazing inventions and discoveries of great men in the world. In addition, I sometimes read humorous stories to relax my mind and even to remove my troubles.

I wonder if there are people who can ever deny that good books are really good teachers and friends.

COMPOSITION

Many young people dislike a rainy evening because they cannot go out and have fun. To me it is not so boring. I can find lots of things to spend an evening when it rains.

First of all, there are assignments that I haveb to finish and lessons that I need to review for the next day's classes. Then, I can amuse myself by playing my guitar for a while. If I am not in the mood for music, I can still join my family in the living-room for a play on television or a video film.

A rainy evening is often not much fun if one spends it doing nothing, but it does seem to pass so pleasantly and quickly when one is happy with so many things one can do.

SECTION B

In this section you will find after the passage five questions of unfinished statements about the passage, each with four suggested answers or ways of finishing. You must choose the one which you think fits best. For each question, 21 to 25, indicate the letter A, B, C or D against the number of the question.

During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often seem to dislike being questioned. They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school. This is a normal development at this age, though it can be very hard for parents to understand. It is part of becoming independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still growing up. Young people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of real interest and not because people are trying to check up on them.

Parents should do their best to talk to their sons or daughters about school work and future plan but should not push them to talk if they don't want to. Parents should also watch for the danger signs: some young people in trying to be adult may experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking. Parents need to watch for any signs of unusual behaviour which may be connected with these and get help if necessary.
