Chapter 34: You don't deserve her
Charlie:
When I heard what happened to Hannah. I lost my mind. She was in school when I walked away. Oh my God. That night I had to see how she was, Max was there and he stopped me from going further. I asked him what he was doing here, he said that he found Hannah on the side of the road, bloody and bruised. It was a hit and run, my heart just stopped. I didn't know if I should cry or find out who hit her because I was so angry for not being there.
He told me that I should go but I refused to leave. I needed to see her, talk her out of her coma but Max still said no. After ten minutes of protesting, I complied and went home. 'You don't deserve her!' he yelled in the distance. I wanted to turn around to ask what he meant but I kept walking away. Not being able to hold it in anymore, I cried leaving the hospital. I blamed her for what happened. What if I lose her and the last words I said to were 'I'm done'. I didn't apologize or told her that I loved her. I'm such a jackass. All week I skipped school, told my parents I had the stomach bug. I tried my hardest to see her but her parents were there and Max. Why was he there all the time? He doesn't even know her. But his words before I left swimmed in my head: you don't deserve her. Maybe he was right but I still needed to talk to her.
I haven't been sleeping or talking to anyone, Austin came over, wanting to know everything about me and Hannah. I explained and he understood but was still hurt that I couldn't trust him enough to tell him about my girlfriend. He forgave and said "whoever you love is fine by me."
Coming to the hospital I was nervous but happy because she's awake. I got her a teddy bear and her favorite snack: gummy worms. I asked the receptionist for her room, I spotted her smiling, wide eyed and pale on the bed. I missed her smile so much. As I inched my way in more, she's with Max again and they're hugging. Why is she hugging him?
Max wanted to push me out of the room the moment he saw me, anger build inside me as my hands formed into fists. I wanted to punch him but Hannah's voice stopped us and said that I could stay.
"Hi Hannah."
"Hi Charlie."
"I'll be outside if you need me Hannah. Do you want something?" Max asked her.
"Just water, thanks," she muttered to him, giving a small smile as he smiled back and left. I frowned at what just happened but shrugged it off going to the chair that was next to her bed. There's a cast on her leg and small bruises on her face but she still looked beautiful.
"How are you?" I asked her.
"I'm alive, that's a good thing. You look like you haven't slept," her voice a bit hoarse.
"I haven't, been thinking about you if you would wake up."
"Well I'm wide awake," she laughed weakly and ran her fingers through her hair.
"I got you these." I handed her the gifts and her smile never left her face.
"Thank you, you remembered I like gummy worms."
"I remember you saying that flowers have no scent and that I should never get you those." We both laughed and shared a comfortable silence, looking at each other's eyes.
"Look Hannah, I'm sorry for what happened."
"Charlie, it's fine. We can't dwell on everything that happened. I was so angry and sad when we argued but I can't hold in my anger all the time because of our secret relationship." How can she be so forgiving? I pushed her away and someone hit her with their car. I hesitantly grabbed her hand and she responded back, thank God she did.
"Whoever did this to you, I'll find and kill them."
She laughed meekly, "no need, it was an accident and I wasn't looking where I was going."
"You can't be so calm about this, Hannah," my voice raised.
"Yes I can. I've been crying all last week, blaming myself for what happened, wanting revenge even but I can't. I'm over it, I'm thanking God every day that I'm still here so I want to be calm." I nodded in agreement. She's right but there's something still in me that wanted to know about us. I still love her. I sighed deeply, about to ask the question but the door opened revealing Max and two other people.
"Linda, Eddie, what are you guys doing here?" Asked Hannah in surprise, lifting herself up from the bed by her elbows.
Linda began to cry as she ran and hugged her. "I'm so sorry, Han. I'm a terrible friend."
"Why are you a terrible friend?"
"I couldn't bring myself to visit you when I heard you were here the first time. I came here the next day but I couldn't stand it. I asked Max to call me when you wake up so I can see you."
"Linda, it's okay. I should be the one apologizing for lying."
"Forget about that, thank God you're ok." They hugged once more and let go, Linda said hi to me and I replied hi back. Her other friend Eddie came to her, gave her a hug too, seeing Max standing there I wondered why he's so protected her so much and I'm gonna find out.
"Max, let's talk," I told him, we both went to the hallway away from the door. "I'm not here to fight but I wanna know why you're so interested in my girlfriend."
"Ex-girlfriend."
"Whatever, I'm supposed to be there for her."
"Well you weren't and I was." He crossed his arms at me, I glared.
"You don't even know her, you didn't even care about her until the dance. I bet you were in on it for everyone to find out."
"I was forced into it and I told her about it, warning her about Louis."
"What's your problem? I thought we were friends."
"We are but you don't deserve her." There it was again, that quote he said last week. I laughed humorlessly at the idea forming in my head.
"Are you in love with her or something?"
"Yes."
WHAAAAAAAT?!
