Chapter 4

Rainbow Steve followed the Red Steve down into the prison, step by step. He knew that he should hurry, that time was of the essence. But every step brought him one step closer to possibly falling under Plague Steve's control. He was terrified.

Rainbow Steve recognized that he had only been running away from his problems lately. He hadn't tried to stand up to another Steve and fight them in months, almost a year. Even when he had his powers, he would just run and hide behind a tree, in the bunker, in a cave. But now, there's nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. The problem was himself, and one can't just run away from themself.

Rainbow Steve began running machine ideas through his mind. The distraction helped him calm down, at least for a little bit. But then they entered the prison. "We here," Red Steve stated. "Six cells. Machines big, cells small. Hallway big enough. Need help, I here."

"Okay, thank you," Rainbow Steve replied, turning away to face the open hallway. He eyed the area he had to work with. A separation machine doesn't have to be that complicated and large, so it looked like he had enough room. He placed down the pistons, put a chest down nearby, and wired everything up. Rainbow Steve stepped into the machine. "Can you turn on the machine please? Then wait for ten seconds and turn it off?" Red Steve nodded and acquiesced. Rainbow Steve stepped out of the machine and turned to Red Steve. "Do I still have the infection on me?" Rainbow Steve asked.

Red Steve looked at the back of Rainbow Steve's legs. "Yeah, sorry."

"But there was lightning, something should have happened..." Rainbow Steve muttered to himself. "Maybe I need to enclose the machine!" Rainbow Steve made his adjustments and went into the machine again. Nothing happened. He began experimenting with other machine designs, desperately hoping that one of them will work. After about five designs, nothing had gotten rid of the infection. On the sixth design, he accidentally broke a piece of redstone. Internally scolding himself for his clumsiness, he fixed his mistake and continued on. However, on the seventh design, he accidentally broke ten pieces of redstone. Why am I so clumsy today? Rainbow Steve asked himself. It's almost like my arm has a mind of its own.... Oh, my gosh. He looked up at Red Steve. "I think I'm out of time. I keep on accidentally breaking redstone even though I didn't want to, and I think it's Plague Steve's doing."

Red Steve bit his lip. "Backup plan?"

Rainbow Steve looked at the ground. "Sure.... I'm out of machine ideas, anyways." He quickly destroyed the seventh machine design and handed everything in his inventory to Red Steve. "Which cell should I go in?"

Red Steve surveyed the prison and pointed to a cell. "That. Exit far." Rainbow Steve wandered towards it, flicked the lever, and entered the cell. Red Steve shut the door and picked up the lever to ensure that Rainbow Steve was locked inside. Rainbow Steve just stood there. He had nothing to do but wait. To get out his nervous energy, he began pacing the edges of his cell. After a few full circles, Rainbow Steve fell on his knees and clutched his head. Red Steve took a step towards the cell. "You okay?"

Rainbow Steve held his hand out. "No, but don't come near me! Hide!" Red Steve took a few cautious steps back and left Rainbow Steve's view. Rainbow Steve continued kneeling on the ground. Tears pricked the corners of his eyes. His head felt like it was getting torn in half. "Goawaygoawaygoawaygoawaygoawaygoaw...." He then screamed as the pain in his head increased a hundredfold. And then everything was eerily quiet. His hands dropped from his head back to his sides.

When Rainbow Steve looked back up, his eyes were a glowing neon green. With these glowing eyes he began to survey the room around him.

Red Steve pressed himself into a corner. The Elder had only told Red Steve to stay on guard and didn't explain how to deal with Rainbow Steve if he became under Plague Steve's control. He didn't know whether he should risk trying to grab reinforcements, which would leave Rainbow Steve unsupervised, or if he should just continue to keep an eye on Rainbow Steve and hope that someone would enter the prison and would be able to help.

Rainbow Steve didn't notice Red Steve. Instead, his eyes landed on the iron door leading out of his cell. Or rather, the hinges of the iron door. Ice began to cover both of his hands as he made his way towards it. Rainbow Steve reached out through the bars in order to grab the upper door hinge. In a panic, Red Steve shot fireballs at Rainbow Steve in an attempt to distract him from escaping.

Rainbow Steve's head snapped up and stared in Red Steve's direction. With a blank face, he summoned a ball of water surrounding Red Steve's head. Red Steve's eyes flared in panic and he tried to move out of the water's reach. But wherever he went, Rainbow Steve made sure that the water was still encased around Red Steve's head. Realizing that just moving away wouldn't work, Red Steve tried to push the water away and ended up thrashing around, trying to get a single breath in. All too soon, Red Steve collapsed and Rainbow Steve let the water fall on top of him as he turned his attention back to the door.

With ice encasing his hands once more, he grabbed onto the door hinge and held onto it for a minute until it became brittle enough to easily break. He then moved onto the two lower hinges. Satisfied with his handiwork, Rainbow Steve stood up again and kicked the door down, a thud ringing out through the prison area.

He stepped out of his cell and looked down at Red Steve's body, his face cold and unfeeling. "Just another stupid Red Steve," Rainbow Steve muttered under his breath, eyes flaring brighter. "No wonder why the Steves are dying out so quickly." He turned and sauntered towards the prison exit, his hands in his pockets and a jaunty whistle bursting from his lips.

A/N: I feel bad.... I just made Rainbow Steve kill someone....

But there is something important to address. I'm going to be pretty busy next week and I haven't written the next chapter yet. So there is a possibility that Chapter 5 won't come out next Friday. Just letting you all know.

See you all later!
