How I Wonder How You Are
Donnie's chest feels like it is about to explode. They can't stop though, Mikey is up ahead and he wasn't alone. Someone was with him, that much Donnie could hear before Mikey hung up on him. What if Mikey is hurt or in danger or worse-
No.
Mikey is strong. He can hold out until Donnie gets there.
He has to.
Donnie turns the corner, revealing the corridor Mikey's tracker is in, bo returning to its bo form. They nearly trip over their own jaw, as it drops at the sight in front of them.
Leo is curled up in Mikey's lap, snoozing away as Mikey sings an old lullaby Papa used to sing when they were small or sick.
"Mikey?" Donnie asks, trying to disguise the crack in their voice.
Mikey immediately turns to glare at Donnie, finger on his lips, shushing them, "He just fell asleep," Mikey whisper growls, "If you wake him..." Mikey trails off threateningly.
Donnie beats down a smile at that and sits next to Mikey, leaning against him, "I know. I know. I'll get a visit from Dr. Delicate Touch."
Mikey nods and turns back to Leo, hand rubbing the churring turtles' shell. Donnie looks from Mikey to Leo, pushing down their surprise to make way for concern.
"He was hurt?" Donnie asks quietly, eyes on the turtle bandages.
Mikey nods, "He was like that when we ran into each other."
Donnie hums and hesitates, before moving their hand to grasp Leo's much smaller and bonier one. They frown, but stroke the knuckles, keeping their hands busy as they think.
"Snacks?" Mikey asks after a few minutes of quiet only disturbed by the running sewer water.
"Always," Donnie offers their little brother a knowing smirk.
Mikey rolls his eyes, "For Leo, not me."
"This time," Donnie teases, making Mikey roll his eyes again.
A few minutes later, Donnie is messing with their phone whilst Mikey sings the lullaby again. Donnie joins in every third word, completely out of tune, drawing playful glares from Mikey.
Donnie doesn't keep track of the passage of time, after that, but it's relaxing and after what is probably a few hours, the turtle in Mikey's lap begins to stir. Mikey smiles down at Leo as he blinks himself awake, whilst Donnie holds their breath. The turtle stretches, making his bones crack and Donnie cringe. He looks up at Mikey, whose smile brightens, and Donnie watches the malnourished turtle's eyes light up as he begins to chirp and grin at Mikey.
Donnie and Leo stare in shock as Mikey tries to imitate Leo's chirps.
Leo snaps out of it first and his eyes widen even more. He jumps at Mikey, wrapping his arms around him. The two lay there chirping and Leo rubs his neck against Mikey's, making the smaller turtle dissolve into a fit of giggles. Donnie watches with a soft smile. Mikey hasn't been this carefree since before they got involved with mystic stuff.
Leo pulls away suddenly, eyes fixated on Donnie. Donnie stares right back, refusing to back down, even if they can feel the sweat building on their brow. Mikey looks between the two. Donnie can't tell what emotion is in that look, but right now, they are more concerned with Leo's stare. Donnie, a usually predatory species, feels like prey under the slider's stare.
Leo's face morphs into a grin and he jumps at Donnie, arms spread, "Dee!"
Donnie startles and can only manage to shuffle backwards, before their arms are pinned to their sides and they are on the floor, wrapped in a hug. They feel Leo rub his cheek against theirs and roll their eyes at their snickering brother. Mikey's going to regret that later.
Donnie freezes in surprise as Leo rubs their necks together, but quickly relaxes, curving their slightly longer neck around Leo's, "Guess you like us then."
Leo just continues to chirp and churr for a few minutes before getting off Donnie and running back into the sewers without any warning.
"Wai- aaand he's gone," Mikey grumbles.
"He's fast," Donnie remarks.
"You think he went back?" Mikey asks, looking up at Donnie, eyes full of worry for their new friend.
Yes, Donnie and Mikey both know is the answer, but neither want to hear it, so Donnie says, "Maybe not. He might've moved out."
Neither of them believe that, but they pretend that they do, just for a bit.
