Chapter 2 - Espresso
A few hours had passed and Tod had awakened. His body seemed rested, but the head was heavy, it should be because of sleeping without eating anything. He got up from the bed almost staggering. He realized that his cell phone was on the ground and in a moment he felt a stab in his head, as if everything was remembered at that moment.
His body became hot with anger. He tried to take a deep breath, and for a few seconds it worked, but eventually he forgot and headed for the kitchen. On the way he saw the clock and it was 03:10 in the morning. He went to the refrigerator, got some juice and made a sandwich.
He sat down at the table and began to think of several reasons why Henrie had sent the message. Would it be to tease him, or was he really worried? He thought of so much, but he would know that he would only get the answer if he would at least try to answer the message.
With a slight movement, he went up to the bedroom and picked up the cell phone. He kept staring at the message for a few seconds and quickly replied:
"Hi, Henrie, I'm fine. I was not feeling well, but now I'm bound!"
As soon as he sent the message, he left his cell phone on the bedside table to be able to turn everything off in the kitchen, but before he could leave the room his cell phone vibrated against the table and he listened. When he got the cell phone again there was a message from Henrie.
His heart quickened and he began to think that he would have woken him with the message since it was late at night. He could not think of anything else and just read the message:
"I'm glad to know, now I can sleep peacefully, have a good night's sleep, see you later."
Tod was completely misunderstood. Had he waited all that time for the answer? Or was it some more Henrie joke? Nothing seemed to make sense, but Tod's mind was too tired to decipher any riddle at that time. He simply went downstairs, packed everything he had used in the kitchen, and returned to his bedroom to sleep again.
Tod's alarm in the morning echoed over the whole room. His body seemed to have been massacred, but still he rose with all his might and did his chores. At breakfast he could not even speak to his parents right and went to the point to wait for the bus.
His mind was thinking about how he would look at Henrie calmly. Or else he would have to be careful if all this was a joke. When he got into the bus, searched every face of his face and did not seem to find it. At the same time he felt a sense of anger and relief, but found a place to sit and breathe until high school.
He hurried down the corridor to his class, and sat without paying any attention to who was on his side. It did not take long and he felt a slight nudge. When turned around, he saw his best friend, Fred, smiling with half-closed eyes almost a Japanese. His face was delicate with a V-shaped chin, small lips and eyebrows, straight black hair.
"What happened to you yesterday? I stopped by your house, but your mother said it was off and it was not even eight o'clock", he finished, closing in on Tod for the answer.
"I was tired", he answered looking sad.
"Calm down, my friend, she's coming back. Do not be like that!", he exclaimed, laughing at Tod, knowing he had no one.
Tod seemed to ignore his sarcasm and turned to pay attention in Physics class, since the professor was facing the two.
"What you gonna do today? Oh, forget it! Today we go in that cafeteria that opened near your house", Fred continued without even realizing that he was speaking a little loudly in the middle of class. "And, I hear they have a new taste of coffee that I really want to try!" He finished looking at Tod, who just nodded his head in agreement.
Classes flew so fast and Tod was still thinking about the same subject. It was not long before the two of them were on the bus to go to the cafeteria. On the way they talked about the subject of physics class until Fred could not stand it and began to question him again about that expression:
"Tod, what really happened? You know I'm your best friend, you can tell me everything, now stop talking and tell me what's going on?" He asked, getting off Tod's first bus.
"Actually ... I do not really know, but what puzzles me most is that I do not know what to do with it", he finished the last word but seemed to ignore it as if Fred had not heard.
"He who? As well?" Fred asked, opening the door to the cafeteria and letting Tod in first.
"He? I do not know how to tell you this ... Let's first get this coffee and then I'll tell you in detail."
They made their way to the cafeteria counter. It was well organized in a very conceptual structure and decoration. Pictures, discs, coffee beans decorated on a wall, and several rustic wooden tables. A very cozy place.
Tod ordered the espresso while Fred asked for the new flavor of latte and lemon coffee. It did not take long and they were sitting at the table to talk about it all. Tod sat with him back to the counter and the door and Fred sat in the chair next to him.
"This new taste is very delicious, it did not come to what I expected, but it's close." Fred concluded.
"But now enough of it and tell me soon!", he finished, staring at Tod.
"So, actually... I'm worried about something." He took a deep breath and continued: "It's Henrie! He has been acting completely different with me and this intrigues me."
"Henrie? The one from the letters club? Your "enemy" in the council? What about him?" Asked Fred, all confused and drinking some of his coffee right away.
At that moment Henrie had just entered the cafeteria. He was alone wearing his favorite black sweater with thin white horizontal stripes and a beige social trousers. He approached the counter and noticed that Tod and Fred were there, but neither of them had seen him.
He asked for his espresso too and went to their table, but then Tod continued the story to Fred.
"Yes, his own!" he snorted.
"I do not know what's happening to him. He has been treating me so well lately that it has made me feel bad about the way we always treated each other because whether we wanted to or not we were close friends." He concluded, drinking a little of the coffee and continuing right away:
"But I think he must be liking me, or doing some trick with me," he finished, almost making Fred choke on hearing this and seeing that it was too late.
Henrie was already after Tod and had listened to everything he could not prevent. He greeted Fred by the look and with a nod and with a subtle movement Henrie rested his hand on Tod's right shoulder.
"Can I join you?" Henrie asked.
