Chapter 17 - The Law of Return
Tod felt his blood bubbling in his veins, as if his whole body was on fire, but he couldn't show any reaction, because, besides, it was he who decided to end it all. The most incredible thing is that in Tod's head everything seemed to fit together, as if all that moments that Henrie had been awkward with him. Then he started to think if the two were already together, but he preferred not to let his mind take him that way.
He just out a long breath and walked towards the school door without making any eye contact with the alleged couple.
Henrie in turn tried to follow him with his eyes, but got no answer.
"So... Are you completely free for me?" Lucy asked even more attached to Henrie. "Because it's good to be...
"ENOUGH! Okay?" Henrie replied with a harsh tone making her a little scared. "I'm done with him. That's what you wanted, isn't it? Done! Now excuse me, I have to go to class..." He finished letting go off her embrace and heading for the main gate.
Lucy quickly grabbed his arm making him stop and then replied:
"Is that how you're going to answer me? You know very well that it is under my control and the least I require is a little empathy..."
"Empathy? Look what you're doing! How can I be empathetic with this?"
"But I'm not doing anything wrong. Everything I've done so far was out of love." She smiled
"Love? I know..." He replied, leaving.
"SEE YOU LATER DEAR!" Lucy shouted, but getting no answer or movement in her direction.
Henrie entered the school furious snorting towards his class, just sat down and leaned his head on table and remained like this until class started. Tod, in turn, was already at his class telling everything that happened to Fred, who did not restrain himself from solving everything in his friend's place, but Tod soon got it out of his head.
"But I think the best thing you should do for now it to get away from him."
"I'm going to try, Fred... I'm going to make it, really, it's the only thing that I have to do."
They continued talking and Fred continued to give advices on the subject until classes started. Tod could be physically present at class, but his mind was certainly not. He couldn't help but think about everything that had happened. His eyes were already watery and he didn't even want to hide it. He needed to somehow end it, even if he was crying.
Fred realized that Tod was crying in the middle of the class, but it was a silent cry and only he had noticed, since they almost sat at the back of the room. He just took a handkerchief out of his backpack and handed it to Tod who quickly nodded in thanks and wiped the tears from his face.
At the break, Tod and Fred left first, as Tod didn't want to meet Henrie, then they quickly grabbed snacks and went to a more secluded part of the courtyard.
"Are you better?" Fred asked handing him an apple.
"Yes... I think that having cried a little relieved that anguish that was inside me... And by the way, thank you very much!" Tod said taking the apple and biting it.
Fred just nodded his thanks and continued to eat. It didn't take long and the silence was interrupted again by Fred:
"Look who showed up for lunch!"
"Who?" Tod asked seeing Henrie from a distance in the queue. He automatically hid behind Fred.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because I don't want to talk with him, at least not for now. Let's go back to the room, please..."
"Are you sure? I think he will understand, because he is looking here right now." Fred said.
Tod tried with all his strength not to look and with a sudden movement he got up and pulled Fred, causing him to get up right away and go out towards the door.
Henrie noticed Tod's departure and felt as if an arrow had gone straight through his chest. Your body heavy and so did your thinking. He tried to focus on everything that was going on around him to try to distract himself from those bad thoughts and was soon answered.
He ended up asking for something very light because he realized that his desire to eat had disappeared from nowhere after the incident. All crestfallen sat at the table alone without maintaining eye contact with anyone. He tried with all his might to hold back his tears that could at any moment well up on his face, and with so much insistence he managed to hold them back, but inside looked like a real pressure cooker.
He finished eating quickly and ran towards the room, leaning over his head on table again.
Tod and Fred returned to the room quickly for fear of being chased by Henrie, but soon realized that this didn't happen:
"Look... At some point you will have to talk it will not be healthy for you to be avoiding that way."
"I know that..." He snorted. "But at the moment I really can't and I don't want to talk with him... And, in fact, I have anything to solve with him, everything I should say I already said. "
Fred just shook his head in denial knowing it wasn't going to end well, and let out a few words that seemed hit Tod hard:
"But what about student council? You will be forced to see each other."
Tod felt those words cut on across his chest in a completely different way. He hadn't thought about the possibility of meeting. He couldn't run away from Henrie. He just sighed deeply, tried to calm himself and said:
"I'll make it! I'm sure." He said several times to himself.
"What are you doing?" Fred asked starring at him without understanding anything.
"I don't know, but who knows If I keep repeating it to myself, I might believe it." He replied, continuing to say the words to get into his head.
Fred continued to stare at him for a few more minutes until he gave a loose laugh and returned his attention to the teacher. The class was in Biology and the teacher was explaining how the heart functions were, something that for a few minutes managed to hold Tod's attention.
As if that weren't enough, classes went by very quickly and soon they were at the end of the last class and Tod's mind went back to thinking about having to find Henrie on the council.
"Will you want me to go with you to the council room?"
"Don't worry! I need to try to do these things on my own, and not to sink you further into this mess that is not your obligation, but thank you, Fred! You are amazing, remember this!" He said stepping up and going into the hall.
Henrie, in turn, didn't seemed too worried about it, in fact, his biggest achievement would be to see Tod on the council, so it didn't even cross his mind not to show up there.
He kept fast through the corridors until he saw Tod drinking water. He took a deep breath and headed towards Tod, but before he could get close, he realized that a boy as handsome as he had just poked Tod's shoulder by calling him:
"Sorry, but you are Tod?"
