Chapter 10 - Twist
Lucy didn't understand why they could talk at the moment, but Henrie's eyes gave everything away. She knew what was going on, but she preferred not to see the real reason.
"All... right." She stammered. "Guys, I'm sorry, but then we talked about it." She said going towards the door with Henrie. They went out to the school entrance. Her heart was racing. She knew this conversation was so important.
They sent a small bench in front of the lower school of a beautiful tree.
"Then! What is so important that you cannot wait until the final meeting?"
"So..." He took a deep breath delaying to continuate. "Actually, I don't even know how to start saying this, but somehow it'll have to be." He said with already teary eyes.
"Henrie? Are you okay? What happened? I'm worried."
"In fact, I never thought it would happen to me. I thought I would love you for the rest of my life." He held his breath. "And I still love you a lot, but at the moment I'm very confused.
"Confused? With what? Could you be clearer?" She lied when asking, prompting him to say what she didn't want to hear, but needed to solve soon.
"I'm liking someone else, I think."
"What? You think? And who is the person?" She asked raising her tone without realizing that she was almost screaming.
"I... Really don't know. I'm just confused and I need time for myself."
"So, you want to break up, is that it? She asked with her eyes already letting some tears flow.
"Yes..." He whispered. "It's the best I can do now. I can't lie to you when I'm also confused about the other person.
"No, fine, I understand." She lied again. "Her eyes couldn't hide their anger and fear together. "You're absolutely right."
"Sorry." Henrie said getting up and starting to walk towards the school door, but before he managed to leave the place Lucy said:
"But just answer me one thing..."
Henrie stopped and turned to face her with red, teary eyes.
"It's him, right?"
Henrie was completely unresponsive, but his eyes couldn't hide the truth when she asked that. It was clear in his eyes. He didn't answer her, just stared at it to show it was true, and left.
Lucy felt the truth from the look and began to cry silently. It didn't take long for Tod to come through the door and meet Henrie. They looked at each other, Tod saw that he was crying, he tried to ask something, but Henrie entered without giving any intention of wanting to talk.
So, he noticed that Lucy was sitting crying and he approached with all the attention of the world.
"Are you okay?"
Her eyes were bursting with tears, but she would recognize that voice anywhere. Her body seemed to heat up completely and she couldn't stop and replied:
"Are you happy now?" She shouted, staring at Tod.
"Happy? As well? I'm worried about you."
"With me? That's what you wanted, right? Now you can have Henrie just for you, do you think that I didn't noticed the way he looked at you?
"Lucy stay calm, I don't understand anything of what you are saying."
"Oh! Don't play dumb, of course you know! I know the whole school knows that Henrie is in love with you!"
Tod just absorbed the impact of those words and his mind started synapsing about everything he lived with Henrie, and suddenly, all of Henrie's behavior seemed to fit together. He couldn't avoid this. He knew.
His eyes shone, but they didn't look like joy, his body became hot and little shaky. His mind echoed intensely saying that Henrie liked him, and somehow, a small smile appeared, but it was so small that it was almost imperceptible.
"He likes me?" He lied. "You really shouldn't be well. Of course not, he likes you, he loves you.
"Love? To me? So why did he break up with me?"
"I... Re... Really." He stammered. "don't know, but I think he must have some reason for doing that." He concluded sitting next to her.
"I really wanted to understand what I did." She said, still crying.
"Calm down! It is not your fault, but I believe that you will resolve this and will soon laugh at the whole situation." Tod said so vehemently, that even he himself came to believe it all, but at the moment it seemed to be the best thing to do.
"Thank you, Tod! You're too kind!"
They hugged each other for a few seconds and then returned to the meeting room. Some presidents had already left for the delay and other stayed to find out what was going on as Henrie came back before and didn't answer anyone when asked where were Lucy and Tod were, but he was astonished to see the two entering the door as if they were good friends. He didn't know how to define whether he was happy to see the two getting along or jealous.
"Finally! Did something happen?" Asked Eduardo, the president of the theater group.
"Everything is great, it was just a personal conversation, but it's all settled, isn't its Lucy?" Tod asked turning to her with a smile on his face.
"Yes! Everything is absolutely fine." She replied with a smile back, but her look implied that she was no well."
They then discussed some more issues that were on the agenda, until there were none left. In all matters Henrie looked at Tod with an enigmatic expression, he couldn't express what he felt, but his eyes chased every tiny movement of him.
Tod even noticed such behavior, but he remained normal with all that, but in his head wondered if he would be irritated for interfering in their relationship.
Before the reunion was over Henrie got up in the middle of a comment from one of the presidents and headed for the door. Everyone looked at him, but he didn't care and just left with his thing.
The reunion ended and, in the end, it was only Tod and Lucy who together arranged everything. She couldn't help herself and thanked him again:
"Thank you very much for your help, you're very special person.
Tod went completely red and said:
"Dispose, but you know anything just call me."
"Okay, and by the way, how are you going home today?" She asked.
"My mom will stop by to pick me up."
"Oh, that's great, because if you didn't have a ride, I would take you, but then I'll be going. See you!" She said leaving the meeting room.
"Bye!" He answered leaving and locking the door to the room.
His mother arrived about five minutes after the arrangement, but Tod was calm about it, but his mind was still thinking about how Henrie should be with all this.
On the way home his mother talked about each other's day. And when he got home, he ran to take a shower that would take everything he went through today. The bath was long, but it was great for him. Aside from most of what he thought about what had happened that day and that he still hadn't talked to Henrie about it, but he felt completely refreshed.
When he left, he dressed in old clothes, since he was at home and started down the stairs to go to dinner. When he was on the bottom steps, he heard the doorbell ring. He startled for a few seconds and automatically shouted:
"I answer!"
His mother just murmured from the kitchen, implying that she had heard. He went to the door and opened it, and to his surprise he was there again. His heart speed up instantly. He knew it would end up being left for him. Only he didn't imagine it would be so soon.
The silence remained for almost a minute while the two were facing each other. Henrie's expression was sad, but he seemed resigned to all that, until he began to speak in that almost hoarse and shaky voice:
"Hi... Sorry to arrive like this, but I think we need to have a conversation."
