Pyper rocked back in the wooden chair while her fingers strummed against the table, her plate of food completely empty after being inhaled by the small girl.
Jesse was still scarfing down his own scoop of mashed potatoes while Dina scolded him to slow down before he choked.
Pyper watched him nearly choke on his own fork and she dryly laughed at the boy. "Dude, if you start choking, I'm not saving your life."
Jesse swatted both the girls out of his face and Dina sat back in her chair while rolling her eyes. "You're an idiot." The boy shrugged his shoulders and pushed his plate forward after one last bite. "And I'm starving, what's your point?"
"You're disgusting," Pyper flashed him a quick smile before turning her attention away.
Jesse crosses his arms over his chest and scoffed with a roll of his eyes, blowing some of his long hair out from his eyes. "You going to break my finger again if I don't stop?"
Dina grabbed his plate and stacked it on top of her own before gathering Pyper's to bring to the cleaning crew. "Don't say that with so much pride, she'll break your ribs next." The girl laughed while scooting back her chair and getting up from the table.
Pyper immediately held up her finger then gestures towards Jesse. "It was in accident! He shouldn't have gotten in my way!"
Jesse squinted his eyes at Pyper in disbelief, "you slammed the door on my hand."
Pyper pursed her lips and shrugged, "like I said, you were in the way."
"Children, no fighting." Dina narrowed her eyes at the both of them before disappearing from the table.
Jesse began ranting about the other several times Pyper nearly sent him to the hospital wing. One of them being when she pushed him off the slide, but Pyper was convinced he slipped from poor footing. But as Jesse ranted about his bad memories, Pyper's attention was drawn towards the front door of the restaurant where an older man and young girl entered.
The girl looked Pyper's age as she remained close to the mans side, his attention turning to Tommy's when he entered the restaurant right after.
Pyper tilted her head side ways curiously as she studied the girl across the room. Her tired and run down state didn't hide the freckles covering her cheeks and the scar over her eyebrow.
Her eyes were almost as bright as the lights in the room and after several long seconds of staring, Pyper found herself getting out of the chair.
"You're not— are you even listening?" Jesse held his hands up in disbelief and Pyper shook her head without a second glance. "Not really," she shoved her chair into the table and started making her ways the girl. Jesse huffed in annoyance but allowed Pyper to disappear in the mixture of people.
Tommy noticed the girl making her way towards them and he smiled politely, holding his hand out for her. "Was wondering where you were." Pyper smiled up at Tommy then shifted her glance between the newcomers. "Joel, Ellie, this is Pyper."
When Pyper first arrived to Jackson, Tommy and Marie took her under their wing and quickly started treating her like she was their own.
It earned her a spot in their house with her own room and personal space. She felt too lucky to find people that suddenly cared for her — she would never take it for granted, but from time to time it made her think about her parents.
She wasn't sure how different her life would be if they were still here. She knew she would be a completely different person — maybe even happier.
"Hey," Pyper smiled up at Joel and gave him a small wave. He nodded his head towards the girl with a gentle smile as he turned to Tommy. When Pyper looked at Ellie, both of their stares met and Ellie found herself growing nervous under her glance. "You look like hell," Pyper blurted with a small laugh. "Hungry?"
Ellie slowly smiled, glancing down at her attire before letting out a tired laugh. "Starving, actually."
Pyper smiled wider and nodded towards the bar, "we can get you something to eat." Before taking a step away from the adults, Pyper turned to Joel and pointed towards the bar. "Is it okay if we get some food?"
Joel was rubbing his knuckles while talking to Tommy before he glanced down at the girls. He hesitated for just a few seconds before shaking his head, gesturing towards the food. "Of course, go eat." He then placed a hand on Ellie's shoulder and squeezed it gently. "I'll catch up to you in a few minutes."
Ellie nodded her head and started rubbing the back of her neck as Pyper led her straight to the bar where food was still being handed out on plates.
"Long travels?" Pyper sent her a smile as she placed her hands on top of the counter.
"You could say that," Ellie gently laughed. "I'm exhausted."
Pyper nodded her head in understanding before grabbing a plate of fresh food just for Ellie, stepping away from the counter to lead her back to the table where Jesse and Dina were still seated.
But when she noticed the girl wasn't following, she turned around and saw Ellie shoving a few pieces of jerky into her coat pocket. Pyper's eyebrows furrowed slightly as she laughed softly, nodding her head towards the table once she caught Ellie's stare.
"Guys, this is Ellie. She just got here with her dad Joel." Pyper placed the plate on the table and pulled out a chair for Ellie to sit down. Ellie watched Pyper with a small smile before awkwardly taking a seat beside her.
Jesse and Dina were speaking amongst themselves before turning to the girls as Pyper introduced Ellie.
Dina smiled brightly at the small girl and Jesse waved. "This is Jesse and Dina," Pyper pointed out before sitting back in her chair.
"It's nice to meet you," Dina's smile didnt falter as she leaned her chin in the palm of her hand.
Jesse pursed his lips, sitting in silence momentarily before nodding towards Ellie as she started to scarf down her own food. "I see you have no problem with our new guest pigging out."
Ellie's head perked up immediately and her cheeks turned a tint of red as Pyper reached over and punched Jesse in the shoulder. "Shut up." She snapped just as he flinched and held onto his arm, wincing at the pain before shooting Pyper a confused look. "You're so abusive."
"Now apologize to our newcomer for being rude," Pyper tilted her chin towards Ellie who sat in her chair with a playful smile forming on her lips.
Jesse sighed heavily and dropped his arm on the table in defeat before nodding. "I'm sorry you're now friends with the towns she hulk. I'll pray for you."
Before Pyper could reach over and snatch his jacket, Jesse was already up from his chair and running away with a loud chuckle.
"Don't mind him, he's stupid." Dina laughed.
"And he wonders why I slammed the door on his fingers," Pyper was now mid laughter as she turned to look at Ellie.
The new girl watching her with a small bit of admiration while her fork stirred the food on her plate. Their first meeting was something unforgettable. Something Ellie wouldn't have changed even for a moment. It was that night that the two girls would start to form a strong bond that could be noticed just about from anyone.
