The Long Way There
It was about 6:30, almost dinner time for me, and I had forgotten I was going to my friend's house for the weekend. My father had dragged me to the car as soon as mom saw we were still there once she got back from work. Plopping down the bag I packed for the sleepover next to me, I hardly had enough time to buckle my seat belt, let alone even close the door before my dad started moving the car. Once I got settled my dad sped out of the driveway and we made our way to my destination.
The ride there was silent, but not uncomfortable. Dad put on some quiet music to ease the little tension that was left. The thick forest was always so peaceful, housing many animals and plants. I gazed at it out my window as we drove by. Getting darker, and darker still as the sun began to set, we drove farther and farther along the road. occasionally getting a glimpse of the bright orange sun through the trees as it set. The shadows across the road reflected the silhouettes of the trees that the sun saw from high up past the atmosphere. It's warm glow reminding me of a campfire in the middle of the woods, something my dad and I would set up when we used to go camping. Reaching the end of the suns light I feel the car ride getting bumpier and realize we're in the gravel lot of my friend's house.
Quickly hooking my bag's strap on my shoulder, I unbuckle and wait for my father to park the car. As soon as it stops I eagerly open the door and run to the porch, only to turn around halfway there to run back to say bye to Dad. after he steps out of the car I wrap my arms around him and he does the same. He quietly says a "Be good." before kissing my forehead, my response being a nod and a smile. I let go and turn around to run back to the porch, only turn around again and wave. He waves back and I knock on the door, to be happily greeted by my friends who usher me in. Looking longingly back at my dad one last time, I see him smile from the windshield and drive off.
