Before We Begin...
I'm starting another one-shot book! But this is specifically for Band of Brothers.
This is gonna be super short with only a couple one-shots because I just wanted to write something for the show I've grown to love so much. I just listed out some of my favorite quotes/moments and will be rewriting them with some more detail in their thoughts and emotions.
Obviously it's going to include spoilers, and for those of you not super into WW2 or you don't know much, this may be confusing.
In summary, Band of Brothers is about a company of paratroopers (The Easy Company) and their events during WW2. They were in D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Carentan, they dropped into occupied Holland for the failed operation Market Garden, the Battle of Heartbreak Crossroads, and the Eagle's Nest (Hitler's mountain fortress).
I'll include the episode name at the top as well as a list of some of the characters mentioned and their roles.
If you wanna check out Band of Brothers, it's on HBO and is a 10 episode miniseries (each episode is an hour). It is insanely accurate, and each episode opens up with an interview from the actual war veterans. If you do end up watching it, let me know what you think! (I personally loved the first episode and episode five, Crossroads)
WARNING: This story will be rated mature for violence and mention of weapons and death. I won't go into huge detail, but I will be mentioning them.
With that, let's get started.
~
"You were gambling, Buck."
"So what? Soldiers can do that. I don't deserve a reprimand for it."
"What if you'd won?"
"What?"
"What if you'd won? Don't ever put yourself in a position where you can take from these men."
-
"Looks like you guys are going to be surrounded."
"We're paratroopers, Lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded."
-
"I never knew him."
"Yeah, you did. Radio Op, 506th basketball team, Able Company. He was a good man. Man. Not even old enough to buy a beer."
-
"The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."
-
"That's edelweiss. It grows in the mountains, above the treeline. Which means he climbed up there to get it. Supposed to be the mark of a true soldier."
-
"I get up there and jumped up on the dike, so in standing there I'm in a different state of mind that I've ever been in before. And there's this young soldier right across the road from me, and I came up directly across from him, eyeball to eyeball. He was just as shocked as could be. And the thing that I can never forget was he smiled. And as he smiled I shot him."
-
"Farthest from your mind is the thought of falling back, in fact, it isn't there at all. And so you dig your hole carefully and deep, and wait."
-
"Men, it's been a long war, it's been a tough war. You've fought bravely, proudly for your country. You're a special group. You've found in one another a bond, that exists only in combat, among brothers."
-
"I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them."
-
A foxhole is big enough to hold you, maybe a fellow soldier, and your thoughts.
When faced with the gunfire from the enemies, would you stand and fight or cower in fear?
Would you shoot the kid in the face or simply stand in shock?
Would you jump out of the plane being fired at or wait for the specific time you were told to?
In all honesty, there ain't nobody who wouldn't be praying to any being out there who would listen.
Praying for their life,
their safety,
for their chance to return home.
