Chapter 3: Arin's Ship (I'm bad at making good chapter names)
You know, I never thought that I'd kill anybody. But right now, I'm seriously thinking about killing Arin. Yeah, he's my brother, but so what? He deserves it.
I begin to hear a conversation from the other side of the door.
I can't really hear what the voices are saying, though, so I creep closer to the door. I sit on the floor and try not to make any noise as I open the door a crack so I can hear.
I hear Arin laughing. That bitch. "She needs to grow some balls. What a baby."
Okay, any chance of Arin living is now eliminated. Sorry, big bro. But this is how it has to be.
Dan doesn't laugh or poke fun at me. Instead, he says, "Dude, that wasn't cool. You really embarrassed her."
Aw, at least someone's nice enough to stick up for me. Either Dan's super nice or Arin's just a really shitty human being.
Probably both.
"Exactly. That was my intention," Arin says. "That's what older brothers do."
"That's not what good older brothers do, Arin," Dan says, sighing. "I have a sister too, and I would never do that to her."
Arin is silent for a minute. Then he says, "I guess you're right. I shouldn't have embarrassed her like that." He pauses, then says quietly, "It was pretty funny how she reacted though."
"No, it wasn't. I actually feel really bad for her," Dan says.
Again, what a nice person.
There's a bit of silence between the two. Then Dan says, "I'm gonna go talk to her."
"Shit," I mumble, getting up and sitting on the bed. So that Dan won't see me sitting on the floor and super close to the door like a weirdo. And so that he won't think I'm eavesdropping.
Which I was.
But he doesn't need to know that.
Dan comes in and gives me a sympathetic smile. "Hey," he says, sitting on the bed next to me. "You okay?"
I now realize that instead of running into the guest room like a baby, I could've just brushed off Arin's remark and said that it wasn't true. If only I could think of these things in the moment. Seems pretty obvious now.
"Hi," I say, looking anywhere but at Dan's eyes. "Listen...what Arin told you...it's...it's not true..."
Wow, (Y/N). That sounded super convincing. Dan's totally gonna believe that.
I finally look him in the eye.
He raises an eyebrow as he says, "Which is why you didn't deny it and ran into the guest room out of embarrassment."
I open my mouth to argue with him, but shut it once I realize that I have nothing to say at the moment.
Dan chuckles. "Look, I get it. Everybody thinks I'm sexy, so therefore, I'm not surprised that you think so." He flips his long, curly hair to the side sassily.
I'm not sure if he's joking or not, but I chuckle anyway. What he said is super true, but I doubt he'd be that cocky to someone he just met.
He chuckles with me. Ah. So he was joking. "But, for real, all jokes aside, I'm not mad at you. Or even weirded out by what you said. In fact, I'm flattered."
Wait, what?
"You're...not..?" I ask slowly. I can't believe it. Other people would be super weirded out if Arin said the same thing about them.
Well, I guess that's just classic Dan. Too nice to be weirded out by a remark that got spread to him by a stupid older brother. Especially if that remark is a compliment.
"No!" Dan says, patting my shoulder. "No, definitely not! In fact, I appreciate your feedback."
I sigh with relief. "I thought that you would hate me. Or that you wouldn't act the same around me." I now realize that I'm talking like I've known Dan for years. But he probably gets the point.
He shakes his head. "I wouldn't change how I act towards someone just because of their opinion on my looks." He then looks me up and down. I can tell he wants to say something but that he's having a hard time getting it out. He bites his lip and looks me over one final time before saying, "And, uh, for the record, you're pretty sexy yourself."
My stomach does a somersault.
Holy crap, man.
Dan, the freaking hottest person ever, just said that I'm sexy. I move my arm to pinch myself, since this is a dreamlike scenario, then think better of it and move it away. I glance up at Dan, who's staring at the bedsheets, before looking down also and saying, "Ah...thanks..."
Dan then clears his throat awkwardly and gets up. "W-well, I'm gonna go and watch Arin play Mega Man some more...sorry for making you feel awkward..."
I smile. "Dan."
He turns around to face me. "Yeah?"
"I don't feel awkward," I say. "Like you, I won't treat you any differently because of this. It's just our opinion on each other."
Dan smiles with relief. "Yeah...you're right."
I stand up. "I'll watch Arin die from rage with you."
Dan smiles and steps out of the way. "Ladies first," he says politely.
How chivalrous of him. It's just a doorway, but I appreciate the politeness nonetheless.
I walk out of the room with a quick "thank you" directed at Dan.
I walk rather quickly to where Arin's located, sit next to him, and whisper in his ear, "Dan just called me sexy."
Arin pauses Mega Man and looks at me, eyes wide.
I nod. "Mhm."
"Wow," Arin says, smiling and staring into space with a dreamy look in his eyes.
"I still don't forgive you, by the way," I say as Dan sits down next to me (I'm sandwiched in between the Game Grumps).
Arin smirks. "I don't care."
"Arin!" Dan scolds.
"Scold me all ya want, Dan," Arin says with a mischievous smile. "Your scolding won't make me more sorry for my actions, though."
Dan opens his mouth to say something, but shuts it. He probably thinks it's not worth the fight. I agree with him at this point.
Arin resumes his game, smirking at nothing.
I really don't like that look. I raise an eyebrow and look at Dan, who also looks suspicious. He looks at me also and shrugs.
"I really don't like the look in your eye, Arin," I say. "What are you planning?"
Arin dies in his game. The smirk that was previously on his face fades for a second. Then it comes back. He leans over and whispers in my ear, "I ship you and Dan so much now. I'm gonna get you guys together no matter what it takes. Be prepared for a lot of awkward situations between you two. This is gonna be one hell of a ride for you."
My heart drops to my feet. "Arin, no..," I mumble. I then realize that Dan is probably so confused, since we're talking about unknown topics like he's not there.
Arin seems to realize that at the same time that I do. He decides to spare me for now and says to Dan, "Remember how I said I bought ice cream today?"
Dan nods. "Uh-huh."
"Well, I also bought cheese puffs," Arin smiles.
And Dan, being the hungry bastard that he is, runs for the pantry.
I look down at the table and see that Dan had already consumed about three fourths of the tub of ice cream. Wow. He literally just got that 15 minutes ago.
"Okay," Arin says. I look up at him. "The reason I'm doing this is because, if everything goes according to plan, during one of your guys' awkward moments and my hint-dropping, you'll confess because of the awkward tension. And boom! Love!"
"I don't really appreciate this," I mumble. "I can confess myself, since I do indeed have a crush on him. I don't need you to make me feel awkward every ten seconds to do that."
"You say that, but I know that you won't confess," Arin smirks. "You're too much of a nervous person to do that. You'll only do that if something forces you to."
I go silent. "Shit, you're right."
Dan comes back, a bag of cheese puffs in his hands.
Arin looks at me, smirking. He raises his eyebrows and mouths, "Get ready. You're in for one hell of a day."
Great...
