( THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT )
Dean and Elena are in a diner, waiting for Sam to come back with some research about any new omens. Elena watches as he eats his triple-stacked waffles with heavy syrup and whipped cream.
"Do you even know how many calories are in that thing?" She asks him and he looks up at her.
Dean points at her plain salad. "No, but I do know how many calories aren't in that. Guys like a woman who can eat." He says.
"Hey. I can eat." Elena says offensively.
"Alright." Dean says, disbelieving her.
Elena stares at him for a moment, then turns to a waitress. "Um, excuse me? I would like a bacon cheeseburger " She turns to Dean, challenging him. "Extra fries."
"Coming right up." The waitress says, then leaves.
"Bacon cheeseburger?" Dean asks.
Elena shrugs. "Why not? I mean, I only eat healthy when I'm around Sam. He hates it, I mean, look at you. You're about as healthy as a sugar coated donut." She says.
"Very true." Dean says just as the waitress comes back with Elena's food.
"Thank you." Elena says as the waitress nods and leaves.
Dean smiles, squinting his eyes. "I bet you can't eat that in 10 minutes." He challenges.
"That is so childish of you." Elena says.
"Chicken." Dean mumbles.
"Excuse me, what was that?" Elena asks.
"I said, CHICKEN!" Dean yells.
Elena places a napkin on her lap furiously. "I am not a chicken. Set your timer, Winchester." She says and Dean obeys.
Minutes later, Dean is looking at his phone and back at Elena. "5...4...3...2..." Dean counts down. Elena stuffs her mouth with the leftover fries as the timer ticks down. She finishes just in time. "1!" Dean yells and Elena swallows.
"I did it!" Elena yells and gives him a high five.
The waitress comes over with an angry look on her face. "Could you keep it down, please? People are trying to eat here." She says as Dean looks at Elena.
"I think that's our cue." Dean says.
Elena and Dean get up and exit the diner. "What a bitch." Elena says and Dean smiles.
"Great job with that cheeseburger." Dean says. "I'm impressed."
"So what do I get from you for proving my point?" Elena asks.
They begin walking down a street. "How about a friendly punch on the shoulder." Dean says and Elena thinks for a moment. She steps dangerously close to him.
"I know what I want." She says.
"Wha-what's that?" Dean asks nervously.
"I want to be there for your. Through all of it. A friend." Elena says.
Dean laughs. "I'm already your friend."
"Yeah, my friend whom I barely know anything about. I don't even know your favorite color." Elena says.
"Don't have one." Dean says.
"So, with the little time you have left, I decided to find out as much as I can about you before you..." Elena starts.
"Die?" Dean asks. "Yeah, I know. But I'm not really that interesting."
"Well," Elena pulls out a notepad and begins writing. "I just so happened to find out that you love bacon cheeseburgers." She says and writes it down.
"This is a stupid plan, Lena." Dean says.
"I think it's a great plan." Elena says. "I'm gonna be by your side until it's your time."
SUBURBAN HOUSE
[ ☾]
A young mother is standing outside her house with a mix of worry and impatience. A car pulls up into the driveway; a girl of about ten years steps out, as does her father.
"Thanks for driving her back here." The Mom says.
"It's not like I had a choice. She pitched a fit." He says.
The Mom turns to the girl, who is hugging her tightly. "Hey,sweetie. What's wrong?" She asks.
"Nothing. I missed you." The little girl saw.
"Okay, but tonight's your dad's night."
"No. I don't like Dad's night. I don't want Dad to have a night anymore." The little girl says.
"Since when? You used to love going to your dad's house. You know, he loves you, and he misses you a lot."
"But I hate it there!" The girl yells.
"You don't hate it." The Mom says.
"Yes, I do! He's mean, and there are monsters there. I don't w-want to go back. Please don't let the monsters get me."
"Okay, sweetie. Okay." The Mom guides the girl back into the house, and the man leaves.
DAD'S WORKROOM
[ ☾]
The little girl's father is in his workroom; there are wood-carved object sitting about, and one of those circular table saws you really don't want to see show up in a horror movie.
He prepares to leave, and as he's shutting off the lights by the door, the table saw turns itself on. Curious, he approaches it, crouching down at table-height to shut it off.
As he starts to leave a second time, the saw turns on again. This time he is less careful as he approaches, he trips and falls on the saw and dies a horrible gruesome death.
DINER
[ ☼ ]
Sam is sitting at a table in a generic Diner, working on his laptop and talking on his phone. Dean and Elena are nowhere to be seen. Sam seems a bit frantic. "What do you mean you don't think it will work, Bobby? It's a demon-dispelling ritual. Well, maybe we got the translation wrong. Look,we can't just let Dean fry in hell while we...there's got to be something."
Outside the Diner, Elena tries to catch up with a fast-walking Dean. "Dean, wait up." She says.
"I told you, I'm not doing that stupid twenty questions thing." Dean says.
"It's not stupid." Elena says. "Is it that bad that I want to know more about you?"
Dean stops walking. "Fine. What's question two?" He asks.
"What's your favorite type of food, besides bacon cheeseburgers?" Elena asks.
"I don't get how this is supposed to help you get to know me." Dean argues.
"The little things matter." Elena says.
Dean sighs. "Cherry pie." He says.
"Really?" Elena asks. "I don't like pie with fruit in it." She says.
"You asked." Dean says as they enter the Diner where Sam is sitting.
Sam sees Dean and Elena approaching. "Yeah. No. I gotta go. Okay. Never mind." Sam says.
Dean enters, looking suspiciously at Sam. "Hey. Who was that?" Dean ask.
"I was just ordering pizza." Sam answers.
Dean looks around. "Dude, you do realize that you're in a restaurant?"
"Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I just felt like pizza, you know?" Sam says and Elena eyes him.
Elena sits next to Sam and Dean sits across from them. "Okay, Weirdy Mcweirderton. So, I think I got something." Dean says.
"Yeah?" Sam asks.
"Cicero, Indiana. Falls on his own power saw." Dean says.
"And? That, that's it? One power saw?"
"Well...yeah." Dean says.
"And you think that this is a case?" Elena asks.
"Well, I don't know. Could be." Dean says.
"I don't know, Dean." Sam says.
Dean leans forward. "Okay, there's something better in Cicero than just a case." He says.
"And that is?" Sam asks.
"Lisa Braeden."
"Should I even ask?" Elena asks.
"Remember that road trip I took, uh... gosh, about eight years ago now?" Dean says to Sam. "You were in Orlando with dad wrapping up that banshee thing."
"Yeah. The five states, five-day-" Sam starts.
"Well, kind of. Although I spent most of my time in Lisa Braeden's loft." Dean smiles.
"So let me get this straight. You want to drive all the way to Cicero just to hook up with some random chick?" Elena asks.
"She was a yoga teacher. It was the bendiest weekend of my life." Dean says and smiles. Sam and Elena give him a weird look. "Come on. have a heart, huh? It's my dying wish."
"How many dying wishes are you gonna get?" Sam asks.
"As many as I can squeeze out. Come on. Smile, Sam! God knows I'm gonna be smiling after 24 hours with Gumby girl." Dean chuckles to himself. "Gumby girl. Does that make me Pokey?"
MOTEL
[ ☼ ]
Pulling up outside a motel in Cicero, Indiana, Dean stops to let Sam and Elena out. "Don't wait up for me, Sammy." Dean says.
"Wait, Dean. Dean, you... Dean!" Sam yells as Dean drives off.
LISA'S HOUSE
[ ☼ ]
Outside a nicely kept suburban house, Dean rings the doorbell. The door opens to reveal Lisa: late twenties, brunette, very fit; she is gorgeous. Dean smiles awkwardly, Lisa stares at him in surprise. "Lisa. How's it going? Wow. So, how long has it been?" Dean asks.
"Eight, going on nine years now." She says.
"Crazy, right?"
"Yeah. So, what are you doing here?" Lisa asks.
"Oh, I was just passing through, and I couldn't resist. I remember that you love surprises." Dean says as he smiles at her.
"Yeah. Dean Winchester. Wow. Just...wow." Lisa says. "I'm-I'm sorry. You kind of came at a bad time. We're having a party."
"A party? Well, I love parties." He nudges past her and enters the house; she takes a deep breath and shuts the door behind them. She leads him into the backyard, which is decorated for a kid's birthday party.
"So, uh, who's the party for?" Dean asks.
"Ben. My son."
"Oh. you have a-" Dean starts.
"Yep." She gestures across the yard to a young boy wearing a black jacket and jeans. He is opening presents. "That's him."
"Yes! AC/DC rules!" Ben yells and holds his fingers into a 'Rock & Roll' sign.
"How old-"
"Eight." Lisa sees the Mom from the teaser enter the yard. "Oh, Dean, could you excuse me a minute?"
Dean is stunned. "Yeah, sure. Don't mind me."
Two women are sitting in lawn chairs, watching Dean pace awkwardly. They're whispering to each in gossiping tones. "Did you hear Lisa call him "Dean"?" The First Wiman asks.
"Yeah. Why?"
"You don't know about Dean? The Dean. Best-night-of-my-life Dean." Woman One says.
"No. Tell me."
"Oh, my god, so,they had this crazy, semi-illegal-" She cuts off as she sees Dean approach.
"Hi." Dean says awkwardly.
"Hi." Woman Two says.
"Hello."
Dean looks very uncomfortable, smiles nervously, and flees. He finds Ben and a piece of cake. "What's up?" Dean asks.
"What's up with you?" Ben asks.
"So, it's your birthday." Dean says.
"Guilty."
"It's a cool party." Dean says.
"Dude, it's so freakin' sweet. And this moon bounce-it's epic."
Dean is slightly weirded out. "Yeah. It's pretty awesome." He says.
"You know who else thinks they're awesome? Chicks. It's like hot-chick city out there." Ben says.
A woman and her little girl walk by and in unison, Dean checks out the mom as Ben checks out her daughter. Dean looks back, looks at Ben, thinks frantically, then darts inside the house.
KITCHEN
[ ☼ ]
Lisa is talking to the Mom, who is looking very frazzled. "So...how you holding up?" Lisa asks.
"Fine." The Mom says.
"Really?" Lisa asks.
"Oh, you know. I just...never mind."
"What?" Lisa asks.
"It's just...I'm worried about Katie. I think there might be something...wrong with her." Says the Mom.
"Of course there is. The poor girl just lost her dad. She's devastated."
"No. That's not what I'm talking about. There is something really... wrong with her. I'm not sure that Katie is...Katie." The Mom says.
"What?" Lisa asks.
"I'm not sure that's my daughter."
"I know you're grieving, but you can't talk like that. Katie needs you.but you don't understand-seriously. we're gonna get you help. It'll be okay." Says
Lisa.
As Dean enters, the Mom shakes her head, runs outside to her daughter. Dean watches her leave, confused.
The Mom leaves. "Katie? Come on, we're leaving." She says.
"So, I, uh, met Ben. Cool kid." Dean says.
"Yeah."
"I couldn't help but notice that, uh, he's turning eight. You and me...you know." Dean says.
"You're...not trying to ask me if he's yours?" Lisa asks.
"No. No, of course not." Dean says. "He's not, is he?"
"What?" Lisa asks and Dean raises his eyebrows. "No."
"Right." Dean looks out at Katie and her Mom. "Something wrong with your friend?"
"She's been through a lot. Her ex just died in this horrible accident." Lisa says.
"Oh, yeah. Didn't I just read about that? The power saw."
"Yeah. Guess there's been a lot of bad luck in the neighborhood lately." Lisa says.
"What kind of bad luck?"
