Chapter ten
"Allah is the protector of those who have faith; He will lead them out of the depth of darkness into light."
Neenah's POV
I was walking through the corridors texting on my phone when I got hit by a hard solid structure. Looking up to see Meenah panting frantically.
" Meenah, what are you doing here, ya Allah, Are you eavesdropping on mum's phone call?? Subhanallah"
"Shhhh...shut up" Meenah said as she went back to her eavesdropping. I quietly did as she said and also went to check why she was eavesdropping but I didn't understand a thing from what I saw or heard so I left to my room waiting for my darling sis to come and explain why she was eavesdropping on mum's phone call.
Meenah came back to our room talking on her phone call with someone, her behavior came to a halt when she noticed I was also in the room. She immediately hang up the call.
"Meenah who where you talking to on the phone? And why where you eavesdropping on mums phone call?" I asked trying to catch my breath.
"Why do you care who I was talking to on the phone, can't I have my privacy?, and about mums phone call I was just trying to confirm our suspicion about the bankruptcy."
"Okay so did you confirm it?"
"Not really, but I got some clues." She said wriggling her eyebrows.
"Detective Ameena Asad" I said and she giggled.
*****
It was Saturday morning. I woke up with stomach cramps.
I wore my favorite tank top and my pink tennis shorts and grabbed my racket. I play tennis every Saturday morning with dad, and I'm playing today, irrespective of my serious cramps.
I wore my sneakers and pulled my twin sisters hair. She automatically turned and tied my shoelaces.
Some might think tying shoelace is the easiest thing ever, but I don't know why I still can't tie my shoelace.
I ran some distance on the drill in the gym before I went downstairs to the football field. I didn't spot the familiar jersey. For the first time in fifteen years, I'm here before dad.
I started doing some warm-ups while waiting for him. He came after some minutes, his face looking pale, as if he has been up all night.
"Morning Dad!" I said handing him his racket.
"Morning. Looks like someone's up really early today" he said and I grinned. "Let's go for a jog before we play"
We were playing basketball today, dad's favorite sport. But he looked disturbed all through the game.
I threw the ball and it bounced towards him, he didn't see it and it hit him on his nose.
"Dad...I'm so sorry..I..I didn't know it'll hit you..I"
"It's alright Hanina. I wasn't concentrating, it's my fault"
I knew he wasn't fine since he called me with my full name. We took a break and sat on a bench. Dad's nose looked really swollen.
We had been quiet for a while before I spoke. "Everything will be fine dad, stop worrying too much" I said squeezing his hands. He looked at me weirdly and I continued to talk. "Dad...we know we're bankrupt now..but everything would be fine, these are trying time, It'd pass insha Allah"
He squeezed my hands and said "it's all my fault Hanina, if only I had checked those papers before I signed them, all this problems wouldn't have cropped up. I blindly trusted my stepbrother, and he turned out to be the one to stab me in the back"
I felt my chest numb at the mention of Uncle Tahir. He was the one? But he was so nice...how could he...
I wanted to ask more details, but dad didn't look like he's in a mood for talking. We slowly parted ways to have a shower before breakfast, and all I could think of was Uncle Tahir.
I don't think I can be able to go out today for the football match. I can't go on a date with Naasar. Not after what his father did to my dad.
****
I told Meenah everything as soon as I reached our room. She listened to me carefully even with her sleepy eyes.
"But you can't blame Naasar for his father's mistake. The poor boy probably doesn't even knows what happened"
She was saying the truth. But the main reason I was avoiding all this with Naasar was because I knew our fathers never got along. I didn't want to get into something that'll make both of us heartbroken.
"Let's go eat breakfast" I said. I didn't even shower.
Breakfast was served in a few minutes. I could see the look on Meenah's face when it wasn't our usual Saturday breakfast, boiled potatoes and eggs were served instead of waffles.
"Where are the waffles?" Meenah asked with a frown on her face. I nudged her and she quietly stuffed her mouth with potatoes.
"Uhm Mama...there's this football match today in school..." Meenah said smirking a little at me. "Can we go..we won't stay long" And mama said yes.
Oh boy...
