Chapter nine
"You will be tested in so many different ways, in ways you'll never be able to imagine."
Meenah's POV
The hot water ran through my soft hair and I sighed a little. Having a hot shower after a really long day could comfort you a lot. School life could be really tiresome and hectic.
The bathroom door banged open and Neenah came inside.
"Hey do you mind? I'm showering!" I snapped at her and she didn't say anything as I expected her to. She splash water over her face and then sat on the toilet seat cover and held her face with her hands. Something must be up with her. Something really serious.
I wrapped my pink towel around my body and I went and sat by the bathtub.
"Hey,what's wrong?" I asked her while holding her hands in mine. She didn't answer, she just kept staring at the running shower I left.
"Is something wrong Neenah, please tell me. Is it Nasaar?"
She shook her head slowly and then turned to look at me.
"It's not about Nasaar, it's....it's something else. I...I heard mom saying something" she spoke slowly, as if contemplating on whether to tell me.
"What is it Neenah, you know you can tell me anything"
"She...she was speaking with dad on the dining table...and.." Neenah stammered.
"And?"
"I heard them saying we're bankrupt....we don't have anything else left except for this house and a few cars"
My eyes grew big as I heard my twin speak. My throat was suddenly dry. I opened my mouth to talk and no words could come out. I felt numb.
"Have you noticed, the drivers, the gardener, the maids, and even some of our cooks, they've all stopped coming...and when I asked mom, she said she gave them leave for some days." Neenah said.
We sat there for some time, with the hot water running, making the whole bathroom foggy. I finally found my voice.
"Does it mean we are poor now?"
"I don't know Meenah... I really don't know" she said and then stood up and left.
I have to speak with mom. Ya Allah, please let what Neenah said be wrong. Please.
***** ***** *****
During dinner the table was very quiet, everyone eating quietly, except for me though, I was just playing with the food, having no appetite.
Dad left without finishing his food. He always tells us not to waste food, and to finish everything on our plate, and today he is doing the exact opposite of what he says.
Dad seems to be very disturbed, he hasn't said a word since he sat down to eat dinner. I have never seen my dad this sad before. I felt really hard to believe we are bankrupt. It confirms my suspicions on dads behavior during dinner. We need to talk about this issue. But how? I can sense mum and dad don't want us to know about it yet. But eventually they have to tell us, they can't keep something big as this from us. Neenah seems very upset about it and mum also. I just hope this doesn't destroy our family peace.

After dinner we all went back to our room, but I went to the balcony to have some peace of mind and clear my thoughts. After our conversation with Neenah in the bathroom I haven't had an atom bit peace of mind, all my thoughts were occupied with what Neenah told me, I feel miserable already even though I haven't confirmed and investigated on it yet, I feel disturbed. From my parents behavior during dinner I knew something was not right, I just hope it's not true, maybe Neenah misunderstood their conversation, perhaps they were talking about somebody's bankruptcy not ours, just maybe.
I Went back to our room and found my sister reading but not fully concentrating on her book.
"Hi...twin sis!! I said after comfortably sitting down on her bed. She raised her head and have me a glance before returning her gaze back to her book, telling me she's not in a mood. She seems very upset.
"Hey listen" I said nudging her shoulder. Just then her phone rang and she picked it up and as soon as she saw the person calling, she threw the phone away and put her head under the pillows.
"As Salam alaikum, Naasar" I spoke trying to sound like her.
"Wa alaikumussalam, hanina" he said. I could think of him scratching the back of his neck nervously. He kept quiet for a while, his breath could be heard.
So he just called to hear her breath?
"About the football match....I uhm...I wanted to know if you could make it tomorrow" he said nervously.
Oh...so my twin's got a date.
"Oh yes...I'll come In Sha Allah" I said and I received a glance from my sis.
"Thank you" he said and I giggled, 'the famous Neenah giggle'.
The phone call ended and I jumped over her. "Neenah's got a date!" I screamed.
