Case #1
Slade Kolosov's POV
"Alright, Claire and I are heading out now, so please, please make sure that you would be a responsible adult," Mel announced and shot me a narrowed stare with her arms crossed over her chest.
I rolled my eyes and let out an exasperated glare. "Mel, I'm not a child. I can take of my own children."
"I know that. But this time, Wyatt is thrown into the mix and both he and Kat are troublemakers in their own right."
"How hard can it be? They are all under ten years old. I'll just tell them no television or something if they don't behave," I answered offhandedly and by the look that Mel was giving me, it was probably the wrong thing to say.
She chewed on her lower lip, "Maybe Claire and I could stay in tonight instead-"
My eyes widened in alarm, I knew Mel had been looking forward to a 'girls day' out with Claire without any of the kids and because I was a good husband, I volunteered to look out for the children. Mel had initially refused but after some coaxing and cajoling, she had agreed.
"No, go. You've been wanting to go. Everything will be fine. The kids will have a movie and dinner and they're gonna to bed after. How hard is that?" I replied soothingly and Mel pursed her lips, thinking it over.
"Alright, alright, I'll go. It's just too bad that little Andrei is sick so both he and Grayson can't come over."
Andrei Kolosov was the newest and youngest addition to the Kolosov family and he was about six months old with striking blue eyes and hair as dark as Katerina's.
"Mel, just go now," I ordered, knowing that she was stalling on leaving due to some poor misconception that when she got back home, everything would be in chaos or that the house was on fire or some rubbish like that.
As if I was incompetent in taking care of four children that were all under the age of ten.
"Okay, okay, I'm going," she snapped at me before leaning down to kiss the top of Kat's head who was engrossed in the latest Disney film showing before reaching down to kiss both Charlie and Sebastian on the cheek. Wyatt was off in the garden playing with the damned dog.
"So remember, I have a detailed colour coded chart that shows bedtimes, activities that can be done, bath times, food for dinner and-"
I rolled my eyes once more and clasped my hand over Mel's mouth, and interjected before she can continue, "Go, you'll be late. I'll call if anything happens."
Mel narrowed her eyes once at me before giving a nod. With a peck on the cheek, she was gone.
Glancing at the clock, I figured I had some time before the twins got bored with their blocks and the Disney film ended, hence, I ambled into the kitchen to read the detailed instructions that Mel had prepared and snorted in amusement that it was indeed colour coded and some words were underlined liberally.
Slade,
Remember, bedtime for the twins is at eight. They are to have their baths at half-past seven and no later. Bedtime for Kat and Wyatt is nine, baths are at eight. They are to have no candy no matter what they say and this includes ice-cream.
Dinner is in the fridge, I prepared chicken pot pie with extra servings of mashed potatoes that can be heated up and be served. They can have a choice of broccoli or apples for vegetables. Make sure that all four of the children have a good portion of it and not just a single piece.
No horror shows at all. No outdoor activities after seven. Before dinner, they are free to do as they like.
Love, Mel
P.S Do take note that you're the adult and don't be pushed around by them. :)
This seemed easy enough. I scoffed and placed the note back onto the kitchen counter. Why the hell was Mel freaking out? Again, how hard was it to take care of kids?
One hour later, I was sincerely regretting my words.
"Sebastian stop that right now!" I ordered as I was met with the sight of my three-year-old son who was attempting to climb on the table. My son turned to face me and giggled before continuing his ascent and I growled under my breath before tugging him away from the wooden furniture and placed him back onto the ground which he began grumbling.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" Kat hollered and I turned around to see her and Wyatt jumping enthusiastically on the sofa. That very image gave me visions of being in the hospital with Kat and Wyatt in casts.
"Stop jumping on the couch and sit down!" I barked out immediately.
Both Kat and Wyatt pouted and sat down but amidst all of the chaos, I realised that Charlie was not here in the sitting room with the rest of her siblings.
Fuck.
"I want dinner!" Sebastian complained as he began banging his tiny fists on the table which caused Kat and Wyatt to join in.
"DINNER! DINNER! DINNER! DINNER!"
My head was pounding, I was fucking tired, the house was a mess, the damn dog was barking non-stop and my youngest daughter was missing in the house.
I was royally fucked.
But the thought of Mel having the satisfaction in being able to prove that I was incapable of taking care of my own kids made me grit my teeth and I forced myself to ignore the fucking headache that I was experiencing.
"We are not having dinner until the both of you have fed the damn dog and washed your hands," I addressed Kat and Wyatt who frowned and both opened their mouths to argue until I added, "If you don't listen, we won't have dessert."
Screw Mel's rule about candy. I needed it to be used as a bargain. Mentally, I apologised and hoped that Mel wouldn't find out.
"Fine," Kat grumbled and went into the kitchen as Wyatt trailed after her.
Feeling slightly pleased that I was able to solve at least the problem with the damned dog, I hefted Sebastian into my arms so that I could keep an eye on him while hunting around the house for his sister.
I started in the dining room first, the playroom after, which was followed by the bedrooms. As each room came up empty, I became more frantic. It didn't help that Sebastian was complaining about being hungry and was looking close to tears. He was seconds away from a full blown fit when I entered the study on the first floor to see Charlie curled up on the sofa having a nap.
The normalcy of that action made me snort a little as the panic and anxiousness in my gut disappeared from finding that she was safe and sound. Mel would never let me hear the end of it if she knew I lost my own daughter in my own house just after a mere hour of babysitting.
Hearing Sebastian's whimpers, I quickly soothed him before reaching out to carry Charlie with my other arm and in no time at all, Sebastian was deposited into his high chair and by now Charlie had woken up and was rubbing her eyes blearily, her strawberry-blonde curls that she had inherited from her mother was all messy and in knots. But at this moment, I couldn't care less. All I could think about was preparing dinner on time before all four kids threw a tantrum.
Dinner passed in a much less hectic and chaotic state.
There was almost a start to a food fight where Wyatt had accidentally hurled a spoonful of mashed potato into Kat's hair and I could feel my temple throbbing from the piercing screech that sounded out. In return, Wyatt had received a mouthful of chewed up apples on his plate of food and a shoving match started.
Bath time was equally messy and for the millionth time, I wondered how Mel managed to do all this on a daily basis with no food fights or screaming or even any spillage from the bath water. By the time the twins were done with bath time, the whole bathroom looked like it was one from the Titanic when it sank.
Quickly, I put them both to bed after reading a short story and deep down, I was hoping that Kat and Wyatt weren't turning the kitchen into a war zone after I had given them the promised ice-cream cartons.
To my immense surprise, everything was calm in the kitchen as both Kat and Wyatt were playing some game on the iPad as they ate their ice-cream.
When they were finally in bed, I staggered to the sofa and sat down, eyes taking in the huge mess around the ground and not to mention the mess in the bathroom as well as the dishes and the mess that have to be cleaned up.
I did have to admit that a small part of me wanted to leave the cleanup to Mel but it wouldn't be fair to her. Hence, with a large groan, I forced myself to clean up the mess and when I was finally done, I sank onto the bed and fell asleep, sheer exhaustion causing me to fall asleep before my head even reached the pillow.

Case #2
"Brother," Grayson greeted casually as he entered the house, holding onto Andrei with Wyatt trailing behind him.
His twin nodded and shoved a slip of paper into his hand and Grayson blinked when he realised it was more than a sheet of paper. "Look at it," Sebastian snapped and crossed his arms defensively. "It's like she doesn't think I'm capable of taking care of my own children which I bloody fucking can, thank you very much."
Grayson resisted raising an eyebrow in question, knowing that the mere action would rile up his incensed brother even more. Mel had not been pleased when she found out from Katerina that Charlie had been missing for an hour, ice-cream had been allowed, a minor food fight had occurred and the bathroom almost flooded despite his brother's best attempts to hide it all from her from the previous babysitting episode.
Claire and Mel had gone for another outing where it was just the both of them and Grayson didn't mind seeing that Claire deserved some much needed break from their youngest son, Andrei who was born much earlier this year.
Grayson hid a smile as his twin began to rant about the unfairness before scoffing as he shut the door. "It's not like you being here will make things easier for us. My own children are like tiny demons from hell, meant to torment me about candy or swear jars."
He couldn't help but snort at that, before laying Andrei into the little cot that Mel had kept from when Charlie and Sebastian Jr were younger before reading through the set of instructions that his sister-in-law had prepared.
Glancing through the set of instructions, Grayson could say it was extremely detailed and easy to comprehend. Bed and bath times were standard, dinner was already prepared in the fridge, no candy after seven this time seeing that there was another adult to supervise, the children have to clean up after themselves and so on. Finished with it, he handed the set of instructions over to Sebastian who growled and set it on the table with a scowl.
"You know what, I'll prepare dinner and dessert and you can entertain them," Sebastian announced before exiting the room dramatically. Grayson sighed and gave a lingering glance at his sleeping son before entering the sitting room to see his niece and his oldest son glued to the television and the twins scribbling on paper with crayons.
"Hi," Katerina chirped as he sat beside her.
"Hello," he greeted back and raised an eyebrow at her feet resting on the coffee table. "Katerina, please remove your feet from the coffee table," he instructed.
"Why?"
"Because the table is not meant for you to rest your feet but for the placement of things in the sitting room and such things include beverages. It is considered highly unhygienic so now, I'm afraid I do have to insist that you put your feet down," he said firmly and Katerina scrunched up her nose and blinked at him. "No."
"No?" he echoed and he could see Wyatt hiding a laugh behind his hand as he feigned interest on the cartoon showing on the screen.
"No." A firm tilt to her chin and Grayson stood up. "Katerina, put your feet down this instant or I would be forced to remove your entertainment on the television and you would have no other option than to practise the pianoforte till dinner."
His niece didn't bat an eye as she ignored him and inwardly, he huffed. "Katerina, I am not giving you a choice but an order. When I count to five and if your feet is still present on the table, you would be sent to your room."
"Why? This is my house," she fired back and Grayson wanted to snort at her logical comment but if he did so, it would only encourage her further and he really didn't need that.
"This is not up for discussion, Katerina. This is not a constitution but a dictatorship. Hence, feet off the table," he said firmly and his niece glowered up at him with a face that strongly reminded him of his brother's expression when he was told off by his wife that he tried really hard not to laugh.
He was not too aware regarding the kind of housekeeping rules that his sister-in-law had, but he assumed that it was marginally satisfactory based on Katerina's manners. However, he had a strong suspicion that it was based on Sebastian and not Mel.
Reluctantly, she slipped her feet off the table and turned away from him, clearly not happy with being told off by him but Grayson didn't particularly care. He was feeling pretty confident and satisfied that he had managed to get Katerina to listen to him. Not many could, the only person who could do that would be Mel. At that moment, Charlotte handed a pink crayon to him and he sat down and began colouring a pre-drawn flower on the colouring book as she crawled onto his lap.
It was probably about five minutes later when Wyatt called out, "Dad, Andrei woken from his nap."
"Andrei has just woken up from his nap," Grayson corrected and Wyatt shot him an annoyed glare that was eerily reminiscent of the face that Claire made when something didn't go her way.
He got up from his position on the ground, keeping an eye on all four children simultaneously and picked up his son from the cot. He certainly didn't want a repeat of when Charlie had supposedly gone missing.
The day Andrei had come into his life was one of the most precious memories he had - after meeting Claire and Wyatt of course. He had never imagined himself as a family man, settling down with children and a house, let alone giving tutoring for homework. However, after Claire and Wyatt and now Andrei, he couldn't imagine living life without them.
Sometimes, deep down, he was afraid that it was all just a lovely beautiful dream and when he woke up, he would be alone without his family and his brother. This was something he had never shared with anyone except Claire who had just listened and responded by telling him that she would always be there for him as long as she was alive.
It may have seemed melodramatic for some but for Grayson, it was perfect.
Gently, he rocked his youngest son in the crook of his arm and soothed him. Andrei had the slight temperament of Claire, which in other words meant that he was more vocal than Grayson himself. However, he had favoured the Kolosov genes with his grandmother's dark hair that Katerina also had and the bright blue eyes that all Kolosov men had. Grayson smiled as Andrei blinked up at him and as he entered the sitting room, he could hear a slight argument starting as Katerina raised her voice at her brother who apparently ruined one of her toys.
However, noting that her youngest cousin was in the room when she spotted Grayson, she lowered her voice but her glare was still as heavy as she levelled it to her brother who glared back at her. Wyatt was keeping silent as he watched the scene with amusement when little Sebastian responded by throwing a crayon at her.
"Stop this childish behaviour at once," Grayson ordered. "We are civilised and hence, we do not use such juvenile actions such as throwing things or raising our voices to express ourselves. Now, apologise to each other for your unseemly actions and be done with it."
Katerina sulked and tossed her hair behind her back and muttered a 'sorry' before turning to the screen, while Sebastian scowled before sullenly apologising and turning away.
Once more, Grayson smirked in satisfaction. Yes, he definitely had it.
"How the fuck did you do that?" His brother growled irately from his position at the doorway, having seen the whole scene of Grayson managing to get the situation under control with no repercussions. If it were him, Kat and Sebastian would have argued to the top of their voices until the whole house could hear what was going on and eventually it would have led to a huge fight with loads of screaming and tears.
"Swear jar!"
"FUCK THE DAMN JAR!"
