Their final march
I've been here before, when the fields were lush and green.
But, the hell that is war has made it tortured and obscene.
The sound of unending gunfire tears at my fragile mind.
Amongst all this death, the peace I need, I cannot find.
I trudge along in rank, my head and rifle hanging low.
I fear and yet I hope, a bullet will strike a silent blow.
The enemy desperately fights as they rush in their retreat.
They run from our anger and from their inevitable defeat
I march ever onward, passing death and decay
Tiredly I follow my army chums, come what may
Off in the distance the war rages on
That is where we are heading, to the battle and beyond
There was no warning cry for us to dive down and duck
An exploding mine, a friend taken, by the weight of his own foot
There is no time for fond farewells, nor service that we can utter
We close his eyes, cross his arms and leave him in the gutter
For days we have pushed through the bloodstained muddy mire
Exhausted, we rest within a church, and beneath its broken spire
Winter winds will soon be here, a chill is in the air
Frost bites at our toes and fingers and peppered our hair
My pack is now a pillow, I lay my head painfully down
Sleep is still hard to find, but for once, war, there is no sound
Morning mist rises up; the sun's rays weakly shine
Not a soul is moving, of life, there is no sign
As the sombre night passed by, war came to visit us
Whilst we slept it pounced and took without any fuss
The radiant sun crests the trees, out calls the morning larch
Now we wake and at last, and begin our final heavenly march
No longer off to fight our War, no Victory, no Berlin
To the Germans we will never lose, but neither will we win
We leave behind our earthly bodies and severe our earthly bonds
We float above the dewy grass, above their swaying fronds
We rise up to the pearly gates; we rise up unto the Lord
We march into his Kingdom, for peace is in his word
