Chapter 35
*Celosia "Robin" Douglas POV:*
I sucked on my teeth to get a piece of meat out that was stuck in between them as I stared up at the white ceiling above.
The ceiling was nothing but a void of white that seemed never ending the more you stared into it. It could easily drive you insane. It was plain, no emotion. No color what's so ever. It was like a state of nothingness.
The clanging of doors opening and closing were heard in the distance. Sometimes I would even hear women arguing and fighting with each other, officers shouting commandments and more.
It was jail.
It was March 20th. I've spent the last six months in it, awaiting my trial for killing the World Leader.
But, you wanna know something? I don't regret a single thing, and I don't give a single fuck.
I will take on my sentence with a smile, if it means saving the world from John Victran, who was only going to lead the world into war and chaos. He was corrupted, greedy and power hungry. In the beginning he just hid it behind his caring, gentle demeanor and pretend to care about world peace just to get people on his side. And it worked...but only for so long.
Not only did he kill my lover's mom in cold blood, but he constantly threatened countries who didn't want to be part of and/or left the one world government. The video that was posted was only the icing on the cake where he revealed everything to us at the prison, not knowing he was being recorded. Everything that was said worked out in experi-babies favor. The people turned on him even more than they already were. Both rich and poor, old and young saw their wrong doings. That's when the protests started to happen in support of experi-babies.
It was slow, but more people were turning to our side.
It made me smile thinking about it. I may have a life sentence, I may even be sentenced to death but if sacrificing my freedom and life means that experi-babies can live in a world where they aren't ashamed of who they are, then I'll accept whatever comes my way.
I flopped flat on the bed which felt like hard cardboard. Rolling up the orange sleeve of my uniform, I scratched my arm.
I can't tell you the last time I had a good nights rest. It's been a while. I barely leave my cell and when I do, it's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I spend the rest of the time reading, sleeping or exercising in my cell.
Plus, it prevents me from too much interactions with the inmates which may lead to fights. It wasn't like I was scared, but unlike my younger self, I wasn't a fighter anymore. It's not worth it.
I could slowly feel myself drifting into sleep as the white ceiling started to become fader and blurrier.
I was almost into dreamland until I heard my cell door unlock with a loud clang.
"Ms. Douglas, come with me", a male staff demanded as she wiggled her finger. Her face showed no emotion and her body language didn't say much either, so I couldn't pinpoint what it is what they wanted.
Was it a visit? Was Gaia, Beval, my parents and the others visiting me? They haven't done so in a month.
"Make sure to pack all of your items too", they finished.
"Um, what's going on?", I asked as I sat up. "Am I being transferred to another jail?"
"No. You are being released", he shook his head. He smiled a small smile, something I haven't seen him do at all since I been here.
I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering if he went batshit crazy.
"What? What do you mean? I-I killed the world leader," I explained.
"Yes, but someone paid for your bail. But that's not all, millions of people protested for your release, even celebrities. But I'm sure your driver will tell you more about that. Now pack your things, and come with me."
Packing everything that I had in my cell, I followed him to the front desk.
At the front desk I filled out my release paperwork and documentation. Once I was done, I was told that my ride was already waiting outside.
Facing the doors, carrying multiple bags in my hand, there was a loud buzz before the jail doors pulled apart.
I walked towards it as the cold wind chilled my entire body, even with a heavy jacket on, it still gave me goosebumps.
The sun blinded me, causing me to squint as I began walking out into the outside world. As my eyes adjusted, shouting filled my ears. Around the jail was protestors, holding up signs. Thousands of them.
"Re-lease Celosia! Re-lease Celosia" was the chant they were shouting.
Some of the signs that I could make out said:
"You saved us!"
"Release her!"
"I stand by Celosia!"
When the crowd noticed I was freed, they cheered loudly. Cameras from news networks were facing me. News Reporters were broadcasting live.
I was speechless. I wasn't sure what to say or do. I was free. I thought I would spend the rest of my life in jail or end up getting on death row. But no, it was clear, because of my friends and family, I was free. They protested my release while protesting for the rights of experi-babies to live in a world with no fear of persecution, hatred or discrimination. They protested so I could live my life like everyone else.
I smiled as I dropped my bags and waved at them high and mighty.
Suddenly, I heard a loud beep.
It was a red car that was parked on the side of the road, in between the crowd of people and the jail. When the window rolled down, I gasped.
It was Noah. He was the one offering me a ride. A smile arose on his face as he beeped the horn again.
I smiled as I grabbed my bags and ran down the steps towards the car. After Noah popped the trunk, I placed my bags in, slamming it shut.
I hopped into the front passengers seat.
"Oh my god, what is happening?", I sighed with a smile, tears about to fall down.
"I hope you used the bathroom, because we have a long drive ahead of us. I'll explain the entire way there", Noah smirked.
"Where are you taking me?"
"You'll see, Noah said, putting his foot on the accelerator.
I nodded slowly before putting on my seatbelt, the crowd and their shouting disappeared behind us.
We were silent for a few moments as the radio played Beyoncé's new music.
"Remember that money that coward Alex received from the world leader after turning us in?", Noah asked randomly. "When he confessed everything out of guilts, he gave the money to Snimizu."
"Yeah?", I responded, trying to see where he was going with this.
Shimizu during the prison break in, Shimizu ordered a solider to give the bag of money to someone trusted inside the prison."
"You?"
"Yes. I'm the one who bailed you out. He wanted that money to be protected in case something happens. And thank god it was enough because your bail money was expensive. But we also have enough left over for something else as well."
I was about to open my mouth but instead I was interrupted with "you'll see".
Noah sighed with a grin on his face
"A law passed Celo, a few weeks ago. What law is this you may ask? It's called The Experi-baby Act. This law states that it is now illegal to discriminate against an experi-baby of any kind, and any hate crime committed against them will result in jail time. And there's even talk of the government offering scholarships and free programs to experi-babies who need it."
My jaw dropped to the floor. I smiled in disbelief as tears arose in the corners of my eyes.
"Gaia, Beval and the others were the ones really out there during the marches and protests. Instead of celebrating her 24th birthday, Gaia spent it organizing protests. They worked hard so you could be freed. Hikari's 15th birthday just passed, but her, Tyler and her friends spent that time handling the social media posts and events at their high school. Because of everyone's hard work these last couple months, the government listened and the law passed. Most are happy about it, but of course, you still have your experi-baby haters."
"Yes, of course," I nodded with an eye-roll, but then I realized something else. "But wait, the one-world government is partly the reason why this all happened. How did they all come to an agreement?
"What one world government?", Noah smirked at me. "They arrested those who played a part in the W.E.A agency, the extermination, the outbreak and the political tensions. Currently, we are voting in new people with clean records."
I blew my breath in relief. I felt like I was in a dream. This couldn't be real. I had to have been still at that shelter, hunting for food, or that jail, lying on that cardboard mattress. But no, I wasn't. I has just watched thousands of people surround the jail, chant for my release, and now I was in Noah's car being driven to wherever, being told that we didn't have to worry about anything else anymore. We were safe. We had the law to protect us. We could finally live in a world where we were people first and experi-babies second.
The drive to wherever took a little over 30 minutes, and no matter how much I asked where we were going, I ended up getting back the two words "you'll see".
I was drifting back to sleep again when I felt the car stop and the car door open.
I furrowed my eyebrows, opening my eyes. This was the best sleep I've gotten in months and I was heartbreaking for it to end. The passenger's seat topped the jail's bed.
I lifted my head up and looked around. We were in Outer Sunset, parked outside of the garage of Noah's house
"Huh?", I exclaimed, opening the passenger's door before getting out. "Why are we at your house? And don't say-"
"You'll see."
At that moment I wanted to slap that smile right off his face. It was annoying me that he wouldn't just tell me why we were hear. What did he want to show me?
I grabbed my things out of my trunk and followed him, visibly frustrated.
He wiggled his keys into the door, and I could've sworn I heard commotion from inside.
Opening the door, it was dark with no lights on, I couldn't see a single thing, but when he turned on the living room light...
"SURPRISE!"
I jumped backwards, clenching my things. A smile arose on my face.
I saw my best friends: Beval and Gaia, and my coworker and now friend, Roshni Viswanathan.
I saw Danny, Isabella, their son Christopher, Thomas, Tyler, Hikari and her friends Yasmine and Devon with party-horns. I even saw Katie, Mr. Hada, and mine, Beval and Gaia's parents.
"Welcome home baby!", my mother cried out as she and my dad ran to hug me.
I hugged them both tightly, something I should've done many times before.
"I love you guys! I truly do", I responded, tears coming down my face.
"We love you too. Thank you for being a daughter who not only saved us, but saved millions of others as well,"
My mother wiped a tear from my cheek before they both broke the hug. Next thing I knew my two best friends swarmed over to me.
"We missed you!!", Gaia, Beval and Roshni said at the same time as they hugged me.
"I missed you guys too! Thank you so much for all of this!", I hugged back.
I looked around at everyone, tearing up again. "Thank you so much for protesting! You worked so hard that they finally passed a law to protect any discrimination towards us. If it wasn't for you all, I would still be in that jailhouse."
There was a deep silence as everyone smiled each other, as if they had a secret.
"Actually Celosia, we didn't even show you the real surprise", Danny chimed in, stepping towards the kitchen. "Follow me".
We followed him to the door that lead to the backyard of the kitchen.
As he was opening the door, I felt my heart racing, wondering what or who it could be.
When I looked out and realized who it was, my orange eyes lit up like a flame.
"Sh-Shimizu?!"
