Chapter 37
*Robin Douglas's POV:
Silence. Silence was the only thing that could be heard on the way to the lake. I didn't bother to break it, Danny didn't, Shimizu didn't, nobody did. I just held my tongue and lowered my head.
We stopped walking and watched the beautiful pond of water.
The waves crashed inches away from my sneakers. Beval's sniffles and whimpers could be heard as his tears splashed down on the sand. I wrapped my arm around his shoulder, trying to comfort him in every way that I could. But I knew, even that wasn't enough. It wasn't going to bring Mohammed back.
Before we left for the lake, we placed any beautiful flowers we could find and settled it on the rocks Mohammed was buried in. He would've loved that.
Mohammed was a boy filled with joy, laughter and goofiness. He was sort of like Gaia: a bit of an airhead, but bubbly and sweet. He did get on our nerves a bit with his ditsy-ness, but overall, he was brave, and always joked around in the most stressful of times.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Shimizu asked me. He carried an injured Katie on his back.
"It's okay I guess, I've seen better" I replied in a quiet voice, not really in the mood to talk.
"Do you, um, still want to catch fish together?" Shimizu asked me as he rubbed my back, comforting me. I looked at him.
"Maybe. I'm not really in the mood for any competition" I responded, before looking over at the others.
Danny had his arms crossed, looking down at the ground, upset about what had happened. He buried the top of his shoes in the sand.
Kimberly, who had a sprained foot and bruises all over her, looked pissed off and not wanting to be bothered or messed with.
Gaia rubbed Beval's back, trying to comfort him in his grief. He was angry and was mumbling to himself. His fist was clenched, and I could see him shivering.
"None of us are" I finished.
I wasn't in the mood to do anything, all I wanted to do was lay in a ditch and soak in a pool of my own frustration. But I knew, eventually I had to be strong. I had to be Robin again. For the sake of experi-babies.
"You see that rocky cliff right behind this lake? That is where the cave is located" Danny pointed, bring up the courage to talk. "Let's keep moving."
And that's what we did.
"Gaia, I want you to go and catch as many fish as you can. Do you see that abandoned canoe over there near the center of the lake?" Danny pointed out.
We stopped in our tracks to locate the canoe. I placed my hand on my forehead, blocking out the light of the sun. There, I could see a brown canoe, just drifting along the small waves.
"While you both are on the boat, you can guide fish over to the canoe and Robin can catch them. If Robin doesn't want to go then Beval can go with you" Danny said before he glared at Beval. We glanced at him as well.
"Not in a mood to catch fish" Beval responded, looking away from everyone as he walked away.
"Well Beval, I kind of, sort of need someone to make the wind blow us back to the shore after we catch fish" Gaia replied to Beval as she rubbed her arm.
"Eh" Beval groaned, indecisive. "Fine, I'll blow it to the shore."
Beval swept his right hand to the right and made the wind blow east. The canoe cruised over to the shore and abruptly stopped as it reached the sand.
"Thank you Beval" Gaia thanked with a small smile as she hugged Beval.
"No problem. Let's get this over with" Beval replied with a dull expression as he and Gaia began walking.
We watched Gaia and Beval walk ahead of us, walking around the lake to where the canoe was, against the shore. They were side by side, only centimeters from one another, close if you tell me.
"They clearly like each other" Shimizu said in a happier tone of voice than before.
"You're just finding that out?" Kimberly asked him.
"No, I mean, just look at those two. They can't stay away from each other. Gaia always tries to get close to Beval, and I always catch Beval eyeing Gaia."
"Well, I'm glad Gaia gained enough courage to tell him how she felt. That was pretty brave of her" Kimberly said as she watched those approach the canoe.
"It took her a long time to do it apparently. I'm just glad he didn't reject her. I'm sure if you had a person you liked and told them about your feelings, they would feel the same way" Kimberly said with a small smile as she nudged me, trying to make me feel better. She then glanced at Shimizu, then back at me.
"Huh?" Shimizu asked, wondering why she glanced at him like that.
"I don't think we should be worried about romance right now. I'm overwhelmed with so much emotion and we've just lost friend not even an hour ago. The constant feeling that our lives are in danger just stresses me out. I understand the concept of talking about something else to get our minds off of it, but I don't think this is the time. Maybe when we get back to San Francisco, we can worry about that kind of stuff " I quickly explained to Kimberly in distress, but secretly trying to make sure Shimizu didn't realize she was hinting that I liked him.
"I understand. I just thought that maybe talking about positive things would help" She explained in an apologetic manner.
"No, not this time" I replied as I shook my head with a small smile.
"Danny? Where is the cave?" Katie asked, looking around as she was still on Shimizu's back.
"Right there, do you see those vines? They are covering the entrance" Danny pointed to the far right.
"Oh great, nobody will ever tell there's a cave there" She replied, with a hint of happiness.
"Let's gather up some sticks so we can make a fire. Gaia and Beval are getting the fish now" Danny said while picking up as many sticks as he can find up off the ground.
I looked over at Beval and Gaia, they were pushing the canoe as far as they could out into the water. Once they got far enough for the boat to float on its own, they jumped onto it.
"They better hurry, I'm starving" Kimberly said, limping over to a pile of sticks.
Because of her sprained ankle, she couldn't walk much without pain. Danny offered her a ride on his back, but she turned the offer down. She could be so stubborn at times.
When she reached down, she accidentally applied pressure on to her sprained left ankle. She shrieked in pain and fell back on her butt.
"Kim? Are you okay?" I yelled, running over to her.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. I just need to get used to it, that's al-"
"What you need to do is sit down and not add any more pressure to your injury. You already added pressure by walking on it, you don't need to do anything else until it heals. So therefore, sit down and let us non-injured folk do the work. Got it?"
Because of my authoritative and parental voice, Kimberly was slightly offended, but kept her snappy words to herself.
"Pfft, fine, I'll sit here. I'm not going to argue with you" Kimberly responded in defeat.
Shimizu placed Katie down near a tree and gathered up sticks along with me and Danny. Once I got enough, I walked over to the cave.
The green, leafy vines covered the entire entrance, I couldn't see through them at all. They were heavy to move out of the way.
Inside was a seemingly endless void of blackness. It was like a rocky tunnel. It was scary and it creeped me out a bit. I was never afraid of the dark, but it was something about dark tunnels that terrified me.
"Let's place the sticks inside in a pile, about fifty feet from the entrance. Not too far, and not to close" Danny suggested, as he moved himself through the vines, into the cave with Shimizu following.
We placed them down about fifty feet from the cave's opening. Suddenly, we ran into Katie and Kimberly, whom were limping into the entrance.
"What?! Huh?! I told you to sit down! What part of "you are injured" don't you underst-"
"Oh, shut up Celosia. Sooner or later we both would've had to come in here anyway. We just decided to do it sooner. Now if you'll excuse me-" Kimberly snapped as she nudged me out of the way.
"What did I say about calling me by my first name?! Why do you and Shimizu do that?! It's annoying!"
"Please leave me out of this" Shimizu pleaded to me before scrambling out of the cave.
Ignoring him, I continued arguing with Kimberly.
"And don't push me or I'll-"
"You'll want? Lite me on fire?" Kimberly asked, pretending to be scared.
"Ugh, you are just so annoying. You just don't get it!" I growled, gripping on to my red curls. "Why can't you just-"
"Enough arguing!" Danny ordered at us as he was leaving the cave. "God, I will never understand young teens. They argue over everything."
Kimberly huffed in response, but then, she did the unexpected. She hugged me.
"I'm sorry for calling you Celosia. I'll sit here in the cave with Katie. You continue doing what you were doing" Kimberly apologized before awkwardly breaking the hug. "I'll try my best to be nicer, for you guys."
I flashed her a small smile as my eyebrows furrowed. I shook my head with a sigh.
"You know, I kind of like you this way: a smart-ass, and a little mean. It's kind of like looking into a mirror" I said, placing my hands on my hips.
"Huh? But we are nothing alike. I was known to be a bully and you were known to be a violent tomboy who was always in fights at school" Kimberly explained, bewildered.
"Well, I'm not that much of a violent tomboy anymore. Not like I used to be" I responded.
"No, you're still tomboyish. I can tell by the way you act" Katie spoke up. "You're energy says it as well."
"Ah, okay? But anyways, are you two doing okay about, you know?" I asked Katie and Kimberly.
"Mohammed?" Kimberly asked. I nodded.
"Not really. It still hurts. I can still see Mohammed dying right there in between us. His legs were busted up and broken" Kimberly said in intense sadness before she began crying. "I can't the picture out of my head."
This was the first time I had ever seen or heard Kimberly cry.
"It's going to be okay. Stay strong, stay strong. I am hurting too, you aren't alone" I said, comforting her with a hug.
"Why is this happening to us? I'm scared Robin. What if W.E.A really is trying to get rid of us?" Kimberly whined as she hugged me back. Katie joined in on our hug.
I opened my mouth a little to answer but closed it when I realized I didn't know exactly what to say.
"The killing machines alerted the W.E.A Headquarters of our presence. W.E.A headquarters controls everything on this island, so they are trying their hardest to get rid of us. But if we are aware and watch our surroundings, we can defeat them. Once we blow up the Headquarters, all killing-machines will shut down, W.E.A's all over the world will shut down, and no more kidnappings of young children and infants will happen" Danny clarified after he and Shimizu walked in with more sticks, overhearing our conversation.
"Exactly how big are we making this pile?" I asked, letting go of Kimberly to face Shimizu and Danny.
"Big enough to roast several fish on sticks. But this pile is big enough" Shimizu answered as he dumped his sticks into the pile. "Robin, start the fire. It's pretty dark in this cave."
Flames lit up from my two hands as I placed them on the sticks below me. I placed my hands away as I watched the fire slowly grow as crackling noises could be heard as the sticks were engulfed into the flames.
While Shimizu and the others huddled around the fire, I walked over to the entrance of the cave and peeked through the vines. I watched as Beval and Gaia were pulling the boat over back to the shore.
"Hey, is everything alright over there?!" I yelled to them. They turned their heads towards me.
"Yes, we caught fourteen fish, so each person has two to themselves!" Gaia yelled back. "The fish are in the boat; they are a nice size too."
"Good job guys!" I said, putting on a big smile with a thumbs up.
"Shimizu, give me your bag. The one with the bomb in it. They are going to need something to bring the fish over in" Danny said, holding out his hand.
"Ok, but the bag is going to smell fishy" Shimizu warned , taking his bag off his shoulder and taking the bomb out of it.
"They'll give it back once they dump all of the fish out" Danny responded.
"I want to help" I volunteered, snatching the bag away from Danny. I began running over to the entrance.
"Oh, okay sure?" he responded, bewildered.
I forced myself through the vines and ran at full speed towards Beval and Gaia, whom were holding a fish.
"Hey, I got a bag for you to put the fish in!" I yelled, approaching them.
"Oh, great, I didn't know what we were going to do with all this fish" Gaia said, receiving the bag from me. "Come on Bev, let's place the fishes in the bag."
Without a word, Beval helped me and Gaia pick up the gray medium-sized fish from the canoe and into the cloth bag. Some fish were still alive, others weren't.
I glanced at Beval. His eyebrows were lowered, and his eyes showed anger and tension. His whole-body language showed anger.
"Ayee Beval, my bestie, my main man, my ride or die, my brother from another mother, my wonder pet, my-"
"Is there something that you need?" he asked with agitation as he looked up at me.
I sucked in my lips, surprised my plan to cheer him up didn't work.
"Well, I wanted to know if you were okay" I said in a shy tone.
"I'm fine."
He said no more after that.
After all the fishes were stuffed inside of the bag, we made our way back to the cave.
"He is still upset about Mohammed, so don't take it personally" Gaia whispered to me, keeping her eyes on Beval in front of us. "I am too though. Mohammed was just so sweet. I can't believe he is gone, and in such a brutal way."
"I don't want to think about it. I try not to, but the reminder is always there, around us" I responded.
"It's alright. We will make it through. Mohammed would've wanted us to keep moving" Gaia said, motivating me as her dimples formed, making a small grin.
Gaia always had a beautiful smile that would inspire you to keep living and know that there was hope for the future. Her almond shaped eyes fitted her round face perfectly, and her Hershey-colored skin shined from the sun's rays. Her coarse hair stood up in all angles as they were in high pigtails and her thin legs walked gracefully. Gaia was a mortal version of an earth goddess, inside and out.
Thirty minutes had gone by. Quietness filled the cave as we silently roasted our first round of fish over the fire, each one penetrated through the mouth.
Nobody bothered to talk to anyone, that's how hungry we were. We haven't eaten since yesterday morning.
I looked over at Mizu, whom was sitting right next to me on the hard, rocky ground.
He was deep in thought.
"Hey Mizzo, what's on you're mind?" I leaned in and asked him. He looked at me with raised eyebrows.
"Um, just thinking about about the world being a utopia where experi-babies and regular-humans can live in peace. Together. I was also imagining my life in a utopia being peaceful and having a well established photography business" Shimizu answered me as he fantasized.
"I imagine myself playing for a well-known professional soccer team, but other than that, I don't really know what else I would do" I explained.
"I'm not sure what I want my life to be like, but I guess a gymnast" Katie answered, deeply thinking about it.
"I would own a piercing and tattoo business, and everyone would be satisfied and love it, cause you know...our world would be a utopia" Kimberly chucked.
"I would try and run for president" Danny answered.
"I would become a famous singer. I would be on the same level as Beyoncé" Gaia claimed with a big smile.
"How about you Beval? What would you want you're life to be like in a uto-"
"I don't know" Beval interpreted Danny rudely. A silence surrounded us as we looked at Beval. "I don't feel like talking right now."
Danny let out a deep sigh.
"Listen Beval, I know it hurts, but Mohammed is gone and he's not coming back. We have to keep moving forward and stay focus. I know Mohammed was a good friend, he was to us, but we can't keep drowning in grief. There is a point in time where we have to-"
"Shut up..."
"I know Beval did not just say "shut up" to Danny" I thought to myself as my eyes widen, shocked at how Beval responded.
"What?!" Danny asked, obviously offended. Beval stood straight up as he clenched his fist.
"I said shut up! Don't tell me everything is going to be okay when it's not! Don't tell me to stop mourning over someone that died earlier today!" he shouted as he stormed over to Danny. Danny stood up, just in case if Beval tried to do anything.
"Listen kid, I never said to stop mourning, I simply said to keep moving forward, even when it hurts! Don't try to twist my words around."
"Why are you so optimistic, even at a stressful, debilitating time like this?! What the hell is wrong with you?! You've lost your mom and dad years ago, so I would expect you to be somewhat sensitive to Mohammed's death. But no, your insensitive, unemotional ass want to be an dickhead and tell me to move on and let him go!"
Shimizu stood up from the ground to deescalate the situation.
"Guys, guys, please, let's not argue, let's just sit down and-"
"Insensitive? I'm insensitive and unemotional? For telling you the harsh reality?! Beval, you've always had a problem with letting things go, from Mina to Mohammed. At least I am strong enough to keep moving on with my life and not stay stuck on one chapter. And another thing, keep my parent's out of this!" Danny yelled back, interrupting Shimizu's plea.
Danny and Beval were now face to face with each other, looking each other dead in the eye.
"You're psychic! You knew all of this was going to happen, didn't you? You knew Kamryn was going to die, you knew a big wave would destroy our boat, you knew we would get stuck on this island and struggle for survival, you knew Mohammed was going to die!"
"Beval, you are out of your mind. My psychic powers only work when it needs to. I can't predict anyone's death; I can only see into the future. But I wouldn't expect you to know that with your woe-is-me attitude. So therefore, I am not going to argue with a whiny, boohooing , emotional-"
What happened next caused me, Shimizu, Gaia and Kimberly to jump into the mix.
Beval punched Danny.
As Beval began punching and hitting him, Danny slammed him on to the ground and held him down.
"Beval stop it!" Danny yelled at him. But Beval didn't stop.
He ended up punch Danny across the face, which led to Danny fighting back.
"Stop it! That's enough!" I screamed as me and Shimizu tired our hardest to pull Danny off of Beval.
It was pretty difficult trying to pull away a twenty-one year old man, an angry one if that.
"Stop fighting, please!" Gaia screamed as she and Kimberly tried to push Danny off of Beval.
"This is not the way to handle things! Whatever happened to thinking rationally?!" Shimizu yelled at Danny and Beval.
Katie was hugging her knees near the fire, crying, scared because of the fight.
After moments of struggle, we finally managed to drag Danny off Beval. But Beval wasn't done. He wanted more.
His eyes were red, his entire face was red. His lip was bruised, his hair was messy, and his shirt was ripped.
Danny fell back on his butt and touched this left cheek where Beval punched him. Even though Danny didn't resist, me and Shimizu still held him back.
Beval tried to jump on Danny but was quickly stopped by Gaia.
"Beval stop!" She yelled, holding him back.
"Let me go, get off of me!" Beval screamed in anger, squirming in Gaia's arms.
"Please, just calm down. Please. I know you are upset, but you have to calm down. Please Beval, calm down!" Gaia pleaded. Instead of just holding him, she hugged him from the back.
It took a few seconds, but Gaia's plea and her hug caused Beval to maintain his composure. He stopped resisting and fell to his knees, with Gaia still holding on to him.
"Beval?" I called out.
His head was down, his wavy shoulder-length hair hung over. His fist was still clenched in his lap.
"What has gotten into the both of you?! Danny, you are twenty-one years old arguing with a fourteen year old boy. That is not the Danny I know! Beval is going through some emotional turmoil, hell, we all are! He needs all the help he can get from his friends!" Kimberly angrily lectured at Danny. She then turned to Beval. "Beval, it is not Danny's fault for Kamryn's death or Mohammed's death! Danny is trying his best to keep us safe! Danny's power comes whenever he wants to use it, he just can't predict anyone's death! You two need to get it together because at the end of the day, all we have is each other! We need to stick together and stop fighting!"
Kimberly scoffed as she stormed over and sat back down near the fire.
"Now let's sit down and eat!" She added.
"Beval, please, let's go back over to the fire and eat our fish, peacefully" Gaia suggested in a kind voice as she stopped holding on to him.
Beval dropped his head as he hunched his shoulders, starting to weep.
My eyes became teary as I watched my friend have an emotional breakdown over what happened.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I just want to go home. I can't take it anymore. I want to go home. I want to see my family again. I can't be here anymore" he cried out, gripping his hair tight.
Danny, full of sympathy, got up and went over to embrace Beval.
"No, please, don't touch me" Beval said to Danny, shoving Danny away. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, it's okay, I know it's a lot to take in. I apologize for calling you names and being insensitive. I hope you can forgive me" Danny said, trying to hug Beval again. Beval returned the hug.
Even though I was disappointed in the aggressive actions of Beval and the insensitivity of Danny, I was happy that they made up and tried to move on. It really showed the mature parts of their personalities and how willing Danny was to help a broken friend get back on his feet.
