Chapter 36
*Shimizu Hada's POV:
Six hours of hiking has passed. It was around three-o-clock now.
In those five hours, we've ran into five killing-machines. The good news is that we didn't break a sweat eliminating them.
Mohammed almost got bit by a snake, bird poop landed on Katie's shoulder, we got chased by a swamp of bees, and mosquitoes had a field day on us.
All that walking we were doing was hurting my feet, and my right shoulder ached from me carrying a cloth bag with a heavy bomb inside.
We weren't allowed to take a damn break. I was so hungry; we haven't eaten since yesterday morning. God, I wanted to scream. This was making me lose my mind.
Most of us were quiet, except for Gaia and Robin chatting to pass time.
It was hard looking at Robin's scar, even if it was covered. It was hard seeing her in pain. That scar stretched from her eyebrow to her cheekbone, but it still didn't take away from her beauty. In a way, it made her look more fierce.
"Can we please take a break?! We've been walking for hours! I'm so hungry" Kimberly asked with a groan.
"We will take a break once we get to the lake. It should be about an hour away by now. The cave is near the lake, we'll catch some fish while we're there."
"What kind of fish do they have?" Gaia asked him, walking up next to him.
"I'm pretty sure all kinds" Danny responded. "We'll make a fire in the cave and eat there. We can't eat outside, the killing-machines will see us."
"So, we have to sleep on hard rock?!" Mohammed asked, not very happy about it.
"Would you rather sleep outside, exposed to those machines?" Danny asked him with a cocked eyebrow.
"Well...no."
"I thought so."
Seconds Danny responded, he suddenly stopped.
"What is it? Another killing-machine?" I asked, ready to fight.
"No. I had another vision from the future."
Danny looked terrified. His expression showed he was lost in thought.
"Well, are you gonna tell us what it is?" Kimberly asked.
"The extermination of experi-babies will only last for a short amount of time because the headquarters will be destroyed."
"Yes! So W.E.A will be destroyed after all! Whoo-hoo!" Mohammed cheered.
"No, it's not that. Months after it shuts down, they will let out a powerful man-made virus that will kill off a good portion of the world.
"What?!" I yelled in confusing and shock. "Why let out a virus if half of the world's population are already experi-babies? They wanted to get rid of half of the population correct? Then it wouldn't be any problem, not to sound like I'm on their side or anything but-"
"No, they were wrong, I was wrong. The population of experi-babies globally isn't three or four billion, it's actually 800 million. Only 800 million people in the world are experi-babies. But recently, that number has been increasing from the fact that more people are being experimented on. There are only two million experi-babies in the U.S."
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I sunk in what he just said. We were rarer than we thought.
"So you lied?!" Kimberly shouted at him with clenched fist.
"No, I did not. I believed in their statistic, I believed there were more of us than it really was. They said 3-4 billion of us were experi-babies, if that were truly so, our world would've really been chaotic. How could I have been so stupid?! It's obvious, the government lied and made it as though their were more experi-babies out here causing trouble than it really was. They purposely placed us all in a bad light in order for other's, or should I say "Regular-Humans" to hate us. Even though there are those of us experi-babies who use their powers for mischief, a good portion of us used them for humanitarian purposes. But of course, the government wanted to make it seem as thought there were too many of us, and majority of us were evil people, just so they can have a reason to get rid of part of the population, and this deadly virus will be most of the work, wiping out four billion people."
Me and my friends looked at each other, fearful of everything he had told us, fearful of this unknown virus.
"I just don't see the point in creating experi-babies, if a virus is going to do most of the work anyway?!" Kimberly said to Danny in confusion mixed with anger. "Can you figure out what the point was?"
"No. I can use my powers whenever I want to, but some things it just won't allow me to see until it's time for me to see it" Danny responded, beating himself up for being deceived by the Government's false numbers of experi-babies.
"What is the name of the virus?" Robin asked.
"I don't know, I just know that we have to keep moving. Let's go" Danny replied as he got himself together and kept walking.
I stayed silent as we walked through the jungle, trying to sink in what I just heard. Everyone around me were silent and tensed, nervous about what was to come in the future. First, the extermination, now a viral outbreak, and to no that the government lied about how many experi-babies there were globally just to cause unnecessary panic was appalling.
As a coping mechanism from all I have just heard, I began to daydream about a world with no more W.E.A.
The sun shined as I was standing outside of a San Francisco movie theater. I was older, in my mid-twenties. The wind blew gently, and the temperature was spring-like. Everyone around me was happy as they walked in and out of the movie theater, no feelings of sadness could be seen.
"Mizu" I've heard an older Robin say with a smile. She, along with an older Beval, Gaia, Kim, Katie, Mohammed and Danny approached me from the parking lot.
"Robin" I smiled as I wrapped my arms around her, then kissed her cheek. A group hug with all my friends followed.
"Let's hurry, the movie should be starting soon" Gaia squealed in excitement as she grabbed Beval's hand. The two jogged into the movie theater with us slowly following behind.
"Sit next to me okay" Robin said with a flirtatious tone.
"Why wouldn't I?" I chuckled. "Being by your side is all I could ever ask for."
What Robin didn't know was that I had a ring in my pants pocket. A marriage ring, just for her after the movie.
"Hey Shimizu."
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Uhh, Shimizu?"
"Yes, my love?"
Next thing I knew, I felt someone slap my cheek, snapping me out of my daydream.
"Get a grip!" I heard Robin yell at me.
"Ow, why would you slap me?!" I yelled back in anger.
"Because you were freaking me out, calling me sweetheart and such!"
"I was daydreaming!"
"What could you possibly have been daydreaming about at a time like this?"
"Is there something that you need? You were calling my name after all" I groaned in annoyance? giving her the side eye.
"Hey love birds, no arguing" Danny huffed.
"Love birds?! Yeah right!" Robin scoffed as she crossed her arms. She then sighed. " Shimizu, I wanted to ask if you wanted to catch fish together, you know, at the lake? We can work as a team" Robin insisted with a cheeky smile.
Why would she ask me that, out of all people? Aren't we all catching fish together?
"I mean, sure, why not?" I responded with a shrug and furrowed eyebrows, slightly confused.
"Great, it can be like a little challenge where whoever gets the most fish wins. It can be us against Gaia and Beval, Katie and Mohammed, and Kimberly and Danny" Robin smiled as she began skipping like her girly-girl best friend Gaia.
"Hey, so what is the plan after we leave this island? Like, what are we going to do?" Beval asked Danny, ignoring Robin's idea.
"Our goal is to try to rebel against the U.S. government. If we can at least tell people of the United Nation's plans, we will be making progress."
"Honestly Danny, this is torture. I feel like we're heroes, but heroes on a suicide mission. How can only eight of us take down the United Nations? We're just kids" Kimberly added on in discouragement.
"How can all eight of us cause an extermination camp revolt that hit the news nationwide? How can all eight of us cross the Pacific Ocean, survive a mega wave and end up on a dangerous island? How can all eight of us still survive after hours of fighting several killing-machines? How can all eight of us come up with these brilliant plans to try to save humanity?" Danny explained, trying to prove a point.
"Well, you're sort of the one who comes up with these brilliant plans, not us" I said as I scrunched up a little, nervous to make that statement.
Danny sighed in frustration.
"What I am trying to say is that we're stronger than we think. We made it through hell and back and we can survive anything. Who cares if you guys are only fourteen or fifteen? I'm almost twenty-two and I'm pretty sure no one my age could survive this!"
Katie slowly, but nervously raised her hand as if she were in class.
"Umm, I'm twelve. I just turned twelve in January" she stated.
"I'm thirteen" Mohammed spoke up in a bubbly tone.
Danny face-palmed himself with a groan.
"What I am trying to say is that, no matter our age, we can survive anything. We are mentally strong people; we will make it through. It's all about the survival of the fittest. We just have to keep our head in the game and-"
Abruptly, Danny tripped over a tree branch and fell on his face. Me and the others tried our best not to giggle.
"Oh, and please don't quote anything from High School Musical, it's corny" Kimberly sniggered as she shook her head and crossed her arms.
"Shut up Kimberly!" Danny scowled as he got up and dusted himself off, obviously embarrassed.
"Are you okay?" I asked him, placing my hand on his shoulder.
"I'm fine. I just lost my balance, that's all" Danny said, tensing up a bit.
Eventually, we paused in place as we began to hear hear growling from our right.
"Danny, Katie and Mohammed, I suggest you guys should hide over there" Gaia sternly said as she pointed over to a tree in front of us.
This time, there were two killing-machines. Both were trolls.
The fight lasted roughly five minutes. It was a bit of a struggle eliminating them because they moved so fast, but we succeeded. The good part about it was that no one was hurt.
After the fight, we walked a bit faster. We couldn't stroll around anymore. All that fighting was getting tiring, I didn't want our abilities to be affected by our fatigue.
An hour and a half had gone by. The ground below us was getting steeper as we walked up a big hill. My feet, thighs and quads were becoming sore to the touch.
"The lake is pass this hill. We should be able to see it once we get up there" Danny grunted, trying to catch his breath.
He was right. When we finally made it to the top of the hill, we could see the lake. It wasn't too big, but it wasn't too small either. Palm trees surrounded it. The water itself was clean and blue, and the waves that crashed on the shore were calm and steady.
"Uh, Danny, can we please stop here? I have to pee" Mohammed said, hunching over as he held his bladder.
"Yeah go ahead, we'll wait here. If anyone needs to use the bathroom, find a tree and do it there" Danny announced to us.
Just like that, Kimberly, Mohammed and Katie left.
I slouched down against a tree to take a break from standing. I placed my cloth bag down and let out a deep sigh. My knees were hurting, my shoulders were sore, and let's not even talk about my feet.
Robin went over and sat next to me near the tree trunk.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so thirsty. Hey Mizu, can you shoot water in my mouth?" Gaia asked me with a puppy dog face, clasping her hands together. She was sitting on a rock about yard from me and Robin.
"Oh wow, why didn't I think of doing that sooner?! I could've clenched my thirst already" I responded in frustration as I got up.
I sprayed some water in my mouth, and in Gaia's, Robin's and Beval's.
"Yo Danny, you want some water?" Beval turned around and asked him.
"No, I'm fine...thanks."
"Man, if there were no killing-machines or W.E.A on this island, I would've planned on staying here forever. This island is beautiful" Robin sighed as she looked up at the beautiful birds passing above us.
"I personally would choose San Francisco. I mean, that's what I'm used to anyway" I replied to Robin.
"That noisy city? With all the earthquakes and the unnecessary hype? You've got to be kidding me" Robin scoffed.
"I agree with Robin, the city isn't all that" Beval agreed, crouching down in front of me.
"I rather be in a noisy city and live a peaceful life, then to be on a paradise like-island and fight for survival. Just saying" Danny spoke up as he stretched his back.
Before any of us could respond, we heard a distant scream from Katie, Mohammed and Kimberly, along with a loud sound of rumbling.
"What the hell was that?!", Robin shouted as she jumped up.
"Oh no", Danny mumbled as he began running over to where the noise was coming from. I placed the cloth bag back on my shoulder and I, along with Robin, Gaia and Beval got up and ran with him.
"Katie! Mohammed! Kim!" I cried out as we pushed our way through bushes, spider webs and leaves. Then, we paused in place. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up from the site that I saw.
We were still on the big hill, but it looked as if the part of the hill that connected to the flat ground had collapsed.
We moved closer to the edge, we were about thirty feet up from the flat ground. Once we looked down, we saw Kimberly, Katie and Mohammed buried in rocks. The ground that was underneath those three must have collapsed into a landslide.
"No!" Gaia cried out, forcing herself to slide down the rocky landslide. We followed.
My heart was racing, I could feel the tears coming and adrenaline taking over my body. I prayed in my head that they were still alive.
As we got closer, we could see slight movement from Kimberly and Katie. Thank God.
In a hurry, we picked up and tossed the rocks off them, some were heavy, some were not.
We could hear groans and moans, but we could also see blood.
"Shimizu..." Katie moaned in pain.
I picked her up and took her fifteen feet away from the scene. I placed her gently on the ground and started to check to see if she was bleeding anywhere.
There were scrapes and bloody bruises on her arms, legs and face, but no tremendous amounts of bleeding.
"I'm fine, just in a lot of pain" Katie grunted as she got up. She tried standing on her two feet but yelled and hunched in pain as she held on to her leg.
"I think it's best if you sit down for a minute Katie" I suggested, slowly sitting her back down. "What happened? How did you guys get here?"
Katie stuttered for a bit before giving a clear answer.
"I was on my way back from using the bathroom and I saw Kimberly following Mohammed. She was asking Mohammed "where are you going? What do you see?". He replied with "it's my parents, I see my parents down that hill, across from the creek."
It didn't make sense to me. Mohammed's parents were shot dead when they were trying to fight the F.E.M.A Officers. How could he have seen them?
Katie's voice begins cracking and she started crying.
"I was confused and decided to join them to locate Mohammed's parents. Right when we were about to go down the hill and across the creek to where Mohammed's parents were...the ground collapsed."
I was bewildered and a little scared. Something was not right about that story. It's either Mohammed was hallucinating, it was a ghost, or someone or something was in disguise of his parents.
"Come on, I gotcha" I heard Robin say to Kimberly as she held on to Kimberly's torso, pulling her up off the ground. Kimberly was limping and her arm was bloody.
But Mohammed, he was still laying there, not moving at all.
Beval was hysterical. He was screaming and crying out for his friend. Gaia hugged him, trying to calm him down, but it didn't help.
"Mohammed! Mohammed!" he screamed. He collapsed on to the ground with Gaia still holding on to him and wailed.
His cries, I will never forget those cries. They will haunt me for the rest of my life.
"Stay here, I have to go see what's going on" I said to Katie before running over.
I ran over and saw Mohammed lying there. Kimberly and Katie were lucky to only survive with injuries and wounds. Mohammed wasn't so fortunate. He was laying on his back. His legs were broken and twisted in a disturbing way, his eyes were half shut, his head was busted from either the impact of the ground or rocks falling on him. A pool of blood was around him.
Danny gripped on to his hair, cursing silently as he paced back and forth. Tears were streaming down his face.
Robin and Kimberly held on to each other as they cried. Katie was heard crying from a distance.
"Oh my god" I mumbled, taking my glasses off.
I sat on my knees and watched for any chest rise. There were no signs of respiration.
I placed my two fingers on his neck. No pulse.
I placed my two fingers on his wrist. No pulse.
Lastly, I laid my head down near his heart. No sound of a heartbeat.
It was clear now, Mohammed was dead.
I closed my eyes and cried, gripping onto the dirt below me.
"Why? How did this happen? Why now? Why ever? We lost Kamryn and now we lost a great friend of ours" I thought to myself.
Beval ran over to Mohammed, still hysterical.
"Mohammed, get up! Get up! Get up!" he cried, shaking Mohammed. His purple eyes dulled as tears poured down his face like a waterfall.
Danny had to drag Beval away and hold him.
I placed my head back up after crying. I looked forward and out at the other side of the creek in front of us. There were two people looking back. It was Mohammed's parents.
"Look!" I shouted at Danny and the others. They looked up at the two people across the creek.
Suddenly, Mohammed's parents began changing form. They changed into pale-skinned, alien-like figures with wide black eyes.
That's when I realize they weren't Mohammed's parents, but killing-machines. But how could they change form into Mohammed's relatives?
Beval, full of rage, pushed Danny off of him and he stormed over to the creek. His purple eyes were glowing, his breathing became more rapid, his face was red and his teeth were grinding.
The wind blew harder and quicker from Beval's strong emotions.
The alien-like killing-machines began running back into the jungle.
"Beval?" Gaia asked in confusion, slowly making her way over to him.
Beval placed his arms together, nearly crossing them and spread them apart speedily.
A big wave of air brushed from him and out towards the side of the island where those two killing-machines were.
The wave shocked all of us. We got down on the ground to protect ourselves.
The wave stretched one-fourth of a mile wide. It demolished everything in its path. Knocked down trees, plants, and it even destroyed those two killing-machines. They were torn to pieces. Any killing-machine that was within a 0.25-mile north radius of us had to have been destroyed.
After the wave of wind, he turned back around. We backed up a little, somewhat scared of Beval. His head was down, and his face was emotionless. His bangs covered his eyes, but I could still see tears pouring down his face.
"Let's give Mohammed a proper burial. Since we have no shovels, we will bury him under the rocks and place flowers on them" Beval said with a shaky voice, pointing to the rocks from the landslide.
I felt sorrow for Beval. He created a bond with his second best male friend behind me, but lost him brutally. I created a bond with Mohammed also, but I wasn't as close to him as Beval was.
The parents, the landslide, I had to think to myself: it wasn't a coincidence. It couldn't have been.
Somehow the killing-machines knew there was going to be a landslide and lured Mohammed away to the edge of the hill, with Katie and Kimberly following along. And what better way to get to Mohammed than to pretend to be his parents?
"Mother nature didn't cause this landslide, W.E.A headquarters did" Danny spoke up with a serious tone as we all placed rocks on Mohammed's body. It's like he knew what I was thinking.
How? How was that possible? Was W.E.A headquarters just located on the island, or did it control it?
All I knew was that Vulcan island was a terrible place.
We had to hurry and find W.E.A headquarters, before it killed us off.
