Chapter 26

*Shimizu Hada's POV:

"I am so sorry that you have to go through this Katie. This must be really hard for you" I said as I placed my hand on Katie's shoulder.

"Yeah, it is" she whimpered as she wiped her tears.

Me, Katie and Danny were standing around the grave that we finished burying Kamryn in.

We had been standing there for about thirty minutes, but had a moment of silence for about a minute.

"It's funny really" Katie spoke up after the moment of silence.

"What is?" I asked as me and Danny looked at her.

"One time before, she told me that when she gets old and dies, she would like to be buried in the forest or jungle. She wanted to be one with nature. She wanted to be surrounded by it. Little did she know that she would die so young, and have her wish be granted unknowingly by us."

"It's kind of like a coincidence right?" Danny asked.

"Yeah, it kind of is" she looked up at Danny, tears still pouring down her face. She began talking to Kamryn.

"I promise that I will be strong for you. I promise that I will continue to keep going and fight through every little struggle that comes my way. I promise that I will be brave and not be insecure and hate myself because of my powers. Like you said before: "my powers don't define me, they are just a part of me". You scared off bullies for me. You comforted me through our hard times when we were being passed around from foster home to foster home. You were always there for me. You will always be in my heart, soul and mind. I can't wait to see you again when it's my time to go. I love you, rest in peace Kamryn Scott, my one and only sister."

Katie started crying again.

"Long live Kamryn" Danny said as he looked up at the sky.

"Fly high Kamryn" I said, trying to hold back tears. Even though I only knew Kamryn for maybe an hour or so during the revolt, it was still a very sad thing to see her die. It was sad to see Katie lose the only family member she had left.

Katie turned her head at us.

"Since I don't have any family left, hopefully, maybe, I can look up to you guys as my family."

"Of course. Maybe you can look up to us as big brothers" I said with a faint smile.

Katie smiled back, but suddenly frowned again.

"Do you want to know how we got captured and taken to the camps?"

Me and Danny looked at each other.

"Sure" Danny nodded.

Katie got up as she stared at her sister's grave.

"At our last foster home, we were abused by a drunkard couple. We were abused sexually, emotionally and physically. It got so bad once that the boyfriend of the couple pulled out a gun at us because we didn't do the chores right. After about six months, me and Kamryn were fed up and made up a plan to run away. We took some medicine, clothes and even stole the couple's money. We ran away, maybe about seven miles from San Francisco and stopped at a gas station to take a break and to get something to eat. As we were eating outside of the gas station's store, a F.E.M.A truck pulled up. Us knowing about the call for an extermination on "experi-babies", we tried to run, but it was too late. They already caught us. They injected us with something, something that made us not able to use our powers. They forcefully placed tape on our mouths so we couldn't say anything and then tossed us into the van."

"Wow" I responded, extremely sad to hear her story. It sounded like she and Kamryn came from a tough life.

"That's terrible. I was taken away from my backyard" Danny spoke up.

"Really?" I asked.

"Yes. Don't you remember Shimizu? I was on the phone with you when it happened. I was warning you about Mina."

"Oh yeah, I remember."

"Who is Mina?" Katie asked.

I looked at her.

"Do you mind if I explain how we got caught? Because it is a long story" I asked her.

"Sure" she replied.

"I'll make the story short. After the President announced the extermination, me, my friends, and our parents were in a panic. Me and my friends discussed things privately in another room. We tried to figure out where to go and what to do. That's when my friend Beval called Mina on the phone. Mina was this girl whom we thought was our friend, but really wasn't. We went to her sweet sixteen and everything. She went to our school and was in the process of dating my friend Beval. She invited us to stay at her and her dad's hideout for a few years, but we've only stayed there for a month. A few days ago, Mina invited us for breakfast at her Mansion, so we had to leave the hideout for the first time in a while. She even insisted that we hung out with her for a while after. Little did we know that she would set us up."

As I was explaining the whole thing, Katie was staring at me, not even blinking for a second. She seemed very interested, yet, a little confused.

"While we were in the library, Danny called and warned me that this was part of Mina and her dad's plan to set us up and that the F.E.M.A guards were already there. Afterwards, I ran and told my friends, but before I could tell them properly, Mina gave out a signal for the guards to come out from their hiding spots and ambush us. They forcefully injected us with something that made our powers impossible to use. One of them knocked my friend Robin out for fighting back, and I think one of them knocked me out as well. They placed us into the van and....yea, that's what happened."

"Oh no" Katie frowned. That's so disappointing Shimizu. It's disappointing that you were betrayed by your own friend."

"Well, the good news is that we are free now, and trust me, it will stay that way" I smiled, pulling in Katie to hug her. "We will protect you."

She hugged back.

Danny looked up at the sky. Rain clouds were approaching fast.

"The rain is coming; I can feel it. I think we should head back no-"

BOOM!

"What was that?!" I asked Danny in a panic.

"Hm, that must've been the car exploding from the fire I caused. No worries, the rain will stop the fire. It's going to be pouring hard all day."

"We should go. I don't want to get caught in the rain. We're already a little sick from doing work out in the harsh cold, getting caught in the rain would make it worse" I stated as I began walking back. Danny followed.

Katie blew her sister a kiss and tried to catch up with us. It was a six-minute walk back to where his brother's underground home was.

"Hey Danny. I have a question?" I asked, right before he was about to whisper to the ground in a foreign language.

"Yeah?" he asked.

"What do you say to the ground in order to open it up? What language are you speaking?"

"Well Mizu, that is for me to know and for you to not find out. But the language I am speaking is Arabic."

I felt kind of embarrassed asking that question. I didn't want to come off as rude.

"Oh okay. I apologize for asking."

"You don't have to apologize. It's just a question. Stop trying to be so polite all the time. It's cringey" Danny chuckled.

"I can't help it. Being polite is a part of me and it is because of how I was raised. My family honors good manners" I stated, pushing my glasses up.

"It looks like the old Shimizu is back. I guess we can say goodbye to the tough Shimizu" Danny smiled at me.

"Oh ha-ha" I said with a sarcastic laugh.

Danny leaned forward and whisper to the ground in Arabic. Me and Katie moved back a few feet and the ground began to rumble and open.

"Ladies first" Danny said to Katie.

Katie, a little nervous, slowly climbed down the latter that was still in place from Danny setting it up to leave underground.

I climbed down next and Danny climbed down last. He said something in Arabic that made the hole close, as if it was never opened.

He grabbed the flashlight that was on the ground and began walking to the metal door. We followed along. It was pretty creepy down there. Spiders were crawling all on the walls, it smelled like dirt, and it was extremely dark.

I felt someone grab on to my arm. It was Katie.

"It's scary down here" she whimpered, looking forward

"Yeah it is, but don't worry, I'll protect you" I smiled.

Katie glanced at me and flashed a small smile.

When we approached the metal door, Danny banged on it about five times.

"Noah, it's Danny" he said.

Several seconds later, we heard a response.

"Prove it."

"Again?! I just did about forty-five minutes ago" Danny groaned.

"I want proof, you could be from W.E.A, trying to pretend to be my brother. What is my favorite color? My favorite band? And favorite food?"

"Your favorite food is chicken salad, your favorite color is yellow, and your favorite band is Imagine Dragons" Danny said in frustration.

Silence filled the air. Next thing I knew, I heard the door unlatching. By how long he was unlatching the door, it had to be secure to the bone.

Suddenly, the door opened, revealing Danny's older brother.

"Listen Danny, one of the girls, I think her name is Gaia, she passed out" Noah said.

"What?! How?" I asked.

"She was showing symptoms of a bad fever. You don't have to worry though; I gave her some medicine. Afterwards, she took a quick shower. Right now, she is resting in the guest room. Hopefully, the medicine would stop the fever in about two or three days. What was that booming sound by the way? It shook the whole place."

"The police truck blowing up" Danny smiled.

Without saying a word, me and Katie walked through the door into Noah's home. Danny followed. It was so warm in there. It felt so good getting out of the freezing cold, I was at such ease.

Right before I was about to flop down on the couch, Noah stopped me.

"Wait! You must take a shower first before you sit on my couch! I will give you your towels, wash cloths and toothbrushes. I also have some clothes for you two to wear" Noah said before walking away.

"Thanks, and hey, do you know where my friends are?" I asked Noah.

Before he could make a left turn down the hallway, he stopped and looked back at me.

"They're downstairs in the basement, watching TV."

"Oh, okay. Is it alright if I go to the guest room and check on Gaia?" I asked politely.

"Sure, just try not to wake her."

"I won't" I said before turning to Katie. "You can go with Noah; he will give you some fresh clothes and will start the shower for you."

"Okay. I hope Gaia is fine" she responded with concern. "I can't...I can't lose another person."

Her eyes were starting to become teary. I pulled her close to me.

"You won't, it's just a fever, nothing more. She already took some medicine, so she should be alright" I said.

After a few more seconds of hugging, Katie forced herself out of my grip.

"I'll go find Noah now" she said as she began walking down the hallway to our right.

"The guest room is down this hallway to our left. It is the 3rd door down" Danny directed to me as he locked the front door.

"Thanks" I smiled faintly.

I walked down the hallway and counted as I passed by the doors. On the third one, I just stood there, wondering if I should go in. I didn't want to disrupt her sleep, but at the same time, I wanted to be sure if she was doing alright.

I blew my breath and slowly turned the knob to the room. There was a loud creak as the door opened. I gashed my teeth, hoping that it didn't wake her.

The guess room wasn't big nor small. It had no windows or television; the walls were white, and the floor was carpet. It did have an air mattress. I supposed it was set up by Noah for us to lay on.

Gaia was laying sound asleep on the bed that was behind the air mattress. The bed was queen sized, so about three people could sleep on it.

But sadly, no one could be able to, since Gaia was sick, and so happened to be laying on the bed.

As I was looking at Gaia, I heard a voice.

"Hey Mizzo."

I opened the door fully and my eyes gazed over towards the left of the room. It was Robin. She was sitting on a chair near the corner of the room.

"Oh, hey. I didn't know you were in here" I claimed.

"Yeah, I decided to stay in here with Gaia. I just wanted some quiet time to think about some things."

I examined her facial expression. She was frowning.

"What's wrong?" I asked. She looked at me.

"Is it about Kamryn?" I asked her.

"No, it's just that, well, I did something to make Gaia angry."

"And what was that?"

Robin paused for a moment, then spoke up.

"She told me something that was unbelievable. She told me to promise her that I wouldn't laugh, but I forgot her promise and laughed anyway. I thought she was joking."

"What did she tell you?" I asked.

Robin pointed.

"First, close the door and come over here."

I quietly closed the room door and walked over. I crouched down next to the chair that Robin was sitting on. She inhaled.

"Gaia likes Beval."

Those three words threw me off. It surprised me. I never knew that Gaia had a thing for him. There were many girls at our school that liked him, who would ever knew that one of them was his best friend. That was utterly shocking. I wondered if he knew about it.

"Wow, umm, wow. I didn't know that they um, liked each other" I responded, a little shook.

"I don't know if Beval likes her. He doesn't even know that she has these feelings, and I think for right now, it should stay that way."

"Why?"

"Because, who knows how Beval may respond to it. He might be freaked out or who knows."

"Do you think she is going to tell him any time soon?" I asked.

"I don't know. That's up to her."

Gaia was always a sweet, kind and bubbly girl, but she also had a habit of not sharing her feelings or emotions. Because of that, I figured she would keep those feelings inside as well. I figured she probably didn't have the guts to tell him how she felt. Icould relate though.

I didn't have the guts to tell Robin how I felt about her. When I kissed her on the cheek a few days ago, she pushed me away. That must've been a sign that she didn't feel the same way I did. I have liked Robin since the time I met her. She was always so kind to the victims of bullying and had a soft heart for them. Even though on the outside, she was as hard as a rock, on the inside, I saw something sweet, kind and loving.

"Hey Robin, why do you fight for victims of bullying?" I asked her randomly.

She looked at me with a confused look, wondering why I asked that.

"I'm just asking because, well, you always fought off bullies and had a soft spot for victims of bullying" I added.

She looked forward and laid back in her chair.

"Maybe I should tell you why I am so, well, violent."

"Sure. I am willing to listen" I said, crouching down near her.

Robin blew her breath.

"I wasn't always this violent and impetuous. There was a point in time when I was somewhat like Gaia, just not really a girly-girl.  I was highly emotional and cried over everything. I was too sensitive. You see, I was bullied heavily in elementary school. They made fun of my name, my eye color and called me a weirdo because of my powers. Teachers didn't pay me any attention and it was all because I was an experi-baby. I was one that because I didn't know how to control my powers and would mistakenly light shit on fire."

Robin?! Bullied?! That was extremely hard to believe. But it honestly explained a lot. She was probably the way she was because she had a lot of anger built up inside because of the bullying.

"The one that affected me the most was when I heard a teacher say to another that I would probably end up in jail by the time I graduated high school, and it was all because my powers were highly destructive. I started hating myself and closing people off. By 4th grade, I was fed up with the bullying and started fighting back...literally. But to this day, I still feel as though I am not being my true self, but I feel as though my true self is a mess.

That's when I stood right up. It startled her a bit.

"Robin. You are literally the most amazing girl that I had ever laid eyes on. Even though you try to emotionally close people off, I could still see through your serious expression and see a sweet girl who was misunderstood all throughout her childhood years. If you really wanted to close people off, you would've pushed me away and we never would've been friends."

"Well, yeah, but Gaia was the one who called you over to talk. I didn't want to engage in conversation."

"But you did it anyway, and the more we talked, the closer we became and the less closed off you were. Correct?"

"Stop trying to disprove my feelings. I am and I feel a certain way for a reason. But thanks for trying to prove how friendly I am" Robin smiled at me in sarcasm.

She was so hard to get through. My words were like bubbles. It popped when it touched her instead of going through.

"I'm not trying to prove anything. All I am saying is that you can still be your true self. Masking your true identity makes things even worse. Eventually you won't really know who you are because you've been trying to become someone that you're not" I explained to her before grabbing my arm. "Robin, your existence itself is gorgeous. Your red hair is like your power: fire. It does what it wants and doesn't listen to anyone. You are fierce, passionate and strong. You don't take crap from anyone and you aren't scared of anything. You are the definition of girl power. You amused me with your insults and sense of humor. You amazed me with your soccer ball skills. You dazzle me with your smile, your beauty and your heart. It is so pure, it's like gold. You are an incredible girl and-"

I stopped myself. Robin's eyes were becoming watery and I could tell she was very surprised that I felt that way about her. She got up from her chair and hugged me.

"Thank you Mizu."

I hugged back.

"Even though I never said it, I swear, you are so thoughtful. You're polite, smart and reasonable. Whenever I want to blow someone's brains out, you try to be logical with me. You're the only one that can really tame me."

I tensed up when she said that.

"You're the one who really brings out my soft side. You're the one that calms me down when I am angry, stressed or frustrated. You cheer me up when I am sad. You comforted me through my troubles. You helped me with homework and my grades went up by the help of you. You were always there for me when I needed you. I care about you, and you care about me. That's why I-"

She stopped herself.

I paused and looked at her, wondering what she was about to say. She looked at me. We were still holding one another in our arms.

Robin snapped out of her gaze and tried to pull herself out of my grip, but I wouldn't let her. She gave me a confused look. That was my chance to tell her how I felt...no, that was my chance to show her how I felt.

I slowly leaned in, my face was getting closer and closer to hers. I was calm on the outside, but screaming in victory on the inside.

Surprisingly, Robin didn't push me away, she didn't even say a word. All she did was close her eyes, preparing for what I was about to do. My lips were a few inches away from hers when suddenly, Beval came barging in.

"Guys, guys, come downstairs, you need to see th-!" He paused as he saw us holding one another.

We pulled apart from each other, as if nothing happened.

"Oh my, so when did this happen?" He asked with a cocked eyebrow and a smirk.

"Oh shut up, you twit! I should be asking why your loud ass barged into the room while Gaia is trying to sleep!" Robin scowled as she walked up to Beval and shoved him.

"Well you see Red Robin; I was going to tell you guys to come down to the basement."

"Why?! And don't call me Red Robin, you train-track-toothed, son of a-"

"Red Robin, yummm!" Beval yelled, singing the trademark song of the restaurant "Red Robin".

Next thing I knew, Robin jumped on Beval, and the two started fighting. I had no choice but to laugh. Those two were hilarious.

"Okay, okay, enough guys" I chuckled as struggled to break them up. After I few tries, I succeeded.

"Now, Beval, what did you want to tell us?" I asked him.

"I wanted to tell you guys that we saw something on the news that you wouldn't believe. There was a house that was on fire in Sunnyside, San Francisco, and I think it was Mina's house" he explained as he stood back up, dusting himself off.

"What?!" someone yelled.

We looked towards the bed, only to see Gaia sitting straight up, shocked at what Beval said.
