Chapter 25
*Gaia King's POV:
We were on the highway for what felt like a half an hour.
Katie couldn't stop crying, but nobody tried to calm her down anymore. She just wouldn't budge.
I felt so sorry for her, I couldn't imagine what she was going through. She and Kamryn were orphans. They lost their parents at a young age, so all they had was each other. But now, Katie had no one. She was all alone now, with a bunch of people that she rarely knew. She was only twelve.
Kamryn was still laying there, long dead on Katie and Robin's lap. Blood was all over their pants, and the metallic smell of it filled the truck. Danny rolled down the windows a bit to take away the smell.
As Katie was crying, she ran her fingers through her sister's hair. Robin tried to distract herself by looking out of the window, tears still flowing down her face.
Robin, Mohammed and Katie sat in the back. I sat in the middle seats with Beval and Kimberly. Kimberly was to my left and Beval was to my right.
It was around 5:00 am, but the sky was getting no lighter, mainly because it was still winter, but the atmosphere was different. I wasn't as happy as I should've been. Even though I was free, I was anxious, scared, and angry.
Anxious, because I was worried that the police would find us and place us back in the camps or in jail. Plus the fact that we basically stole a police truck, they would give us a lengthy sentence. Scared, because I knew that this was only the beginning, and that we would probably be spending the rest of our lives hiding in the shadows.
Angry, because of Robin. What kind of friend was she to laugh at my pain like that?! I couldn't even look her in the eyes anymore. I feared that she would tell Beval.
I didn't say a word to her that whole night. She tried to talk to me a couple of times, but I ignored her. I didn't have anything to say to her.
As I was deep in my thoughts, suddenly, I felt somebody touch my arm. It was Beval. I jumped a little when I realized that it was him.
"You good? You were staring into space" he stated.
"Don't touch me, please" I blurted out, scooting away from Beval. He gave me a bewildered look.
"Sorry" he replied in confusion.
I looked away from him, trying not to blush.
"You know, you have been acting strange lately" he stated with seriousness.
"Huh?" I asked as I looked back at him.
"You have been acting strange around me for months. What is wrong?"
I didn't say anything, I just looked down and played with my fingers. That's when he leaned over to look at my face. I looked up. His face was filled with concern.
"Come on, tell me what's going on with you. You can tell me anything" he said in a friendly tone.
I bit my lip.
"Gaia, you don't have to be shy, it's just me."
"That's the thing Beval, I'm shy because it's you."
"Huh?" he replied, giving me a confused look.
"Nothing, don't worry about it, I am perfectly fine. Really, I am" I quickly said, forming a fake smile.
Beval just furrowed his eyebrows and nodded his head.
"Okay then."
"Sorry I had you worried" I apologized.
"It's fine, I just felt like you were hiding something."
"Beval, we are best friends, we don't hide anything from each other."
I felt very hypocritical saying that.
"That's right" he smiled. He leaned back into his seat and looked out of the window, like everyone else was doing.
I looked back at Robin to see if she was watching me and Beval and sure enough, she was. I gave her an angry look and turned back around.
"Hmph" I said as I crossed my arms and pouted.
The next thing on our list that we had to worry about was finding a place to hide from authorities because we knew that they will be looking for every single experi-baby that escaped.
Hopefully, Danny's brother lived someplace rural, where a lot of people didn't live.
Who was his brother and where did he live? We didn't know.
"What are we going to do about Kamryn?" Katie whimpered from the back of the truck.
We all looked back at her.
"We will find a place to give her a proper burial" Danny stated in an sympathetic way as he was driving.
"I want it to be surrounded by wildlife and nature" Katie stated.
"It will" he responded.
"Thank you" Katie said as she wiped away tears.
I looked over at Kimberly whom was sitting right next to me, she was looking out of the window. Her leg was twitching rapidly, and she was biting her nails. She felt eyes on her and looked at me.
"What are you looking at?!" she scowled at me.
"You" I said boldly.
"Well stop doing so, I'm not in the mood. I'm tired, I'm cold, I'm hungry and I feel terrible."
"I know, I know. I do too, I don't really feel well either, my throat is hurting like crazy and I feel pretty hot" I said to her as I placed my hand on her shoulder.
"Not my problem" Kimberly said as she brushed my hand off her shoulder.
I rolled my eyes. Even during sad moments, she was still mean.
"Hang on guys, we will be there in about ninety minutes" Danny spoke up.
"Where does your brother live?" Mohammed asked from the back.
"Underground" he responded.
Me and my friends paused and looked at each other.
"Underground? Why does he live underground?" Kimberly asked.
Danny was silent for a few moments.
"He has to hide from W.E.A. If they find out he is still alive, they will find him and kill him."
Silence filled the truck for several moments.
"Wait a minute, we have to go underground again?! We just came from underground a few days ago" Robin spoke up.
"Well, like it or not, we are going back underground again."
"Why couldn't his house been in a forest, in the mountains or in someplace rural or some-"
"Do you want to live or not?!" Danny snapped as he looked back at her, swerving the car a little by accident.
Robin, a little startled, slouched down.
"I do" she responded.
"Then I suggest you be quiet and be grateful!"
I looked back at Robin. She placed her head down, a little embarrassed that she was yelled at, because usually, she was the one that yelled at people.
After a long hour and a half later, I felt the truck make a right turn. The sharp turn woke me up. I opened my eyes and realized that I was laying my head on Beval's shoulder. Beval was leaned over, asleep, laying his head on his hand, on the truck's door. I looked to my left, Kimberly was slouched over, snoring.
The only people who weren't asleep was Katie and Robin. Katie was still quietly crying. Robin forced herself to stay awake, her eyes were becoming pink and the bottom of her eyes were becoming dark.
I looked outside. The street was rocky, hilly and nothing like the smooth and wide highway street. This street was narrow and there weren't any signs to tell me where we were. There were hundreds of snow-covered trees all around us, dancing and blowing in the freezing wind.
I could see a glimpse of the rising sun in a distance, and the sky's colors ranged from turquoise to purple and pink. It was beautiful.
"Where are we?" I groaned as I rubbed my eyes, sitting up straight.
"We are in Oregon" Danny replied, looking at me from the rear-view mirror.
'What? Why are we in a different state?" I asked.
"Umm, because my brother lives in Oregon" he replied, as if I asked a stupid question.
"How far are we from his house?"
"We should be there in the next ten minutes. Sit back and relax."
I slouched back in my chair again. To make time go faster, I went back to sleep.
"Wake up kids, we're here!" Danny shouted at us as he opened the door and shook us awake.
I jumped up, startled.
"Ugh, why did you have to wake me up like that?" I groaned as I wiped my eyes.
"Yes, because we are at the location" he replied nonchalantly.
Kimberly sucked her teeth and mumbled under her breath, furious that she was woken up in such a way. Annoyed and frustrated, me, Beval and Kimberly got out of the truck.
We were deep in the forest, no sign of streets, highways or people anywhere. We were just surrounded by nature.
Shimizu was already awoke and standing near the truck, looking around. Danny pushed down the middle seats so Mohammed, Robin and Katie could be able to get out of the truck from the back.
Mohammed quickly climbed out.
"Let me have her" Danny insisted to Katie and Robin as he leaned into the car, holding his arms out. They willingly gave Kamryn's body to him. He placed her over his shoulder.
"Please, be gentle" Katie pleaded.
"I will" Danny nodded sadly. He looked at Shimizu.
"Shimizu, do you want to help me pick a place to bury her?" Danny asked.
"Yes, I can help" he nodded.
"I want to come along as well!" Katie implied.
Danny and Shimizu's faces were filled with pity for Katie. They felt really sorry for her.
"Of course you may come along with us, she is your sister after all" Danny said.
"Wait, where is your brother's house? Well...his hideout?" Beval asked, then corrected himself.
Danny pointed.
"You see that big rock over there? The entrance to his home is right under it."
I, along with my friends looked at the large gray rock that was yards away from us.
"But first, there is something that I need to take care off" Danny stated. He gently placed Kamryn down on the ground and climbed inside of the truck.
"What are you doing?" Robin asked.
"I'm trying to find a match. I need to lite this truck on fire."
"Why?!" I asked.
"The police are able to track down this truck to its location. I do not want anyone finding us."
"How can anyone find us if we are underground?" Mohammed asked.
"The police dogs can" Danny replied as he climbed out of the truck, he finally found a match.
"But what if we cause a wildfire?" I nervously asked Danny.
"We won't. The trees are too far for the fire to be able to touch them. Stop worrying so much."
He picked up a piece of wood from the ground and rubbed the match against it.
"You guys might want to move out of the way" he said, turning his head to us.
We backed up about seven feet.
Danny threw the match into the car and watched as it made a fire that quickly spread.
"Now it will be as if the truck never existed" Danny said with a sinister smile.
"How are we going to put the fire out?" Shimizu asked.
"We won't, but mother nature will" he said before looking up at the sky. "It's going to rain in less than an hour."
"Are we still able to find a nice place to bury Kamryn?" Katie asked, trying to get Danny to get his attention back on her older sister.
"After I let my brother know that I am here, then we will go find a spot to bury her. We are still able to, even if it rains" Danny responded.
"Okay" Katie nodded as she crouched down and held on tightly to Kamryn.
Danny walked over to where the rock was. He began pushing it back.
"Need some help?" Beval asked.
"No, I am fine."
A few moments later, he stopped pushing.
"The entrance is right here" he said to us, pointing down at the ground where the rock had been.
Me and the others just looked at each other.
"Uhh, okay then" Shimizu said before he began approaching the spot. We followed along. The ground looked normal, I couldn't even tell that someone's home was right under it. Good.
Danny crouched down and placed his face only inches away from the ground. He whispered something in a foreign language. It sounded like Arabic.
"What is he saying?" I whispered to Mohammed.
"I don't know, I can't really hear it" he replied as he furrowed his eyebrows and squinted, trying to listen.
Danny stood back up.
"Step back" Danny said.
We quickly moved about five feet away from the spot. Suddenly, we heard the ground rumble. The ground where the rock had been began to crack and collapse.
Because of the rumbling, I almost lost my balance. Thankfully, Mohammed caught me.
"Thanks" I said.
"No problem" he smiled a little.
The rumbling lasted for ten seconds. Once it was finally over, me and my friends slowly walked over to the big hole in the ground to see what to expect.
The hole was about four feet in height and four feet in width. But it looked to be about eight feet deep.
"Excuse me" Danny said, wanting us to get out of his way.
We backed up, giving him some room. Danny jumped into the hole, landing with a big thud. He looked up.
"Are you guys coming or not?! It's a bit of a land, but I'm sure you guys will be okay. Katie and Shimizu, you two can stay up there, I will be back in a second."
"Okay!" Shimizu shouted down at Danny.
Kimberly hopped in first. She lost her balance at impact, but Danny helped her up. Mohammed hopped in second, Beval hopped in third, Robin hopped in fourth and I hopped in last.
Danny said something quietly in Arabic again and the hole began to close.
"What did he say?" Beval asked Mohammed.
"Why are you asking me? First Gaia, now you" Mohammed said in annoyance.
"Because you and Danny are the only ones here who can understand and speak Arabic" Beval snapped back.
"Guys, please. Now is not the time for arguing" Danny claimed.
It was dark, I couldn't see much at all. That is until Danny grabbed a flashlight from off the ground and turned it on.
In front of us was a hallway or a tunnel of some sort. The walls around us were concrete and lead the way to a medal door. The door looked secured. Next to us on the ground was a ladder, which I am sure was for if you wanted to leave the place.
Danny began walking towards the door, we followed.
"I wonder why W.E.A. is after his brother" Kimberly whispered to Beval.
"I don't know, maybe he exposed them on their bullshit or something" he shrugged.
"Hmm, or maybe he saw something that he wasn't supposed to see and that is why they are after him" Mohammed guessed.
Danny began banging on the medal door.
"Noah, it's me, Danny. Me and a few of my friends are here!"
Several seconds later, we heard a deep voice from the other side of the door.
"Daniel? Is that you?"
"Daniel? That's his real name? Danny must've been a nickname" I thought to myself.
"Yes, it's me."
"Prove it! What is my favorite color? My favorite band? My favorite food?" he asked.
"Your favorite color is yellow; your favorite band is Imagine Dragons and your favorite food is chicken salad."
Seconds later, we heard some things being unlatched on the door. Next thing I knew, the door sprung wide open.
I could finally see what it looked like on the other side of the door. It looked like the inside of a regular house, but underground. I didn't see windows of any sort.
Danny and his brother immediately hugged each other. His brother was pretty short, about 5"6. He looked to be in his middle or late thirties. He was bald, had caramel skin, glasses, and was of an average weight. He had a huge scar on his forehead.
"I was so worried about you; I was afraid that the guards would get to you and place you in those camps."
"They did, but we've only stayed there for about two days. We revolted out of that camp, many guards died, and some prisoners were killed. Me and the kids right here are fine for the most part. Unfortunately, one of their friends that were with us died while we were on our way here. Her name was Kamryn."
"Oh, I am so sorry to hear that" Danny's brother said to us all. Danny began introducing us.
"This girl right here, her name is Gaia, that's Robin, Beval, Kimberly and Mohammed."
We all waved.
"Nice to meet all of you, my name is Noah Abbasi."
Danny pointed down the tunnel.
"There are two other kids up top, one is named Shimizu, and the other is Katie. Katie is the sister of Kamryn, and Shimizu is injured, a bullet went through his arm."
"A bullet huh? And these kids escaped with you, right?" Noah asked.
"Yes, but I knew four of them before we were placed into the camps."
"Really? So, all of you must've been experimented on" Noah said as he stroked his chin. He looked at me.
"What is your power?" he pointed.
"I can control earth, but I am not able to use my powers. Before the F.E.M.A guards took us to the camp, they forced a needle into us. What they injected into us caused us to not to be able to use our powers" I answered.
"No worries, I have something that will take care of that" Noah smiled.
"What power do you have?" he pointed at Robin.
"I can control fire" She answered.
He looked at Beval.
"I can control air."
He looked at Mohammed.
"I can read people's minds."
He looked at Kimberly.
"I can shape-shift into any animal that I want."
"Interesting, and what about the other two, up top?" Noah asked Danny.
"Oh. Them? Shimizu can control water. But I don't know what Katie can control."
"She has flexibility" I spoke up.
"Wow. Hey, did you guys know that Danny has psychic powers?" Noah asked us.
"Yeah, we knew" Robin answered.
"I didn't" Kimberly stated.
"I didn't either" Mohammed spoke up.
"Is it okay if they stay here with me, that is until we figure out a plan?" Danny asked his brother.
"Sure, of course, as long as they don't eat up all of the food," Noah said before looking straight at us. "You children look pretty dirty, sick and tired. You must've all been through some hard times. A few of you are in your pajamas."
"You see, we were kidnapped and taken to the camps in our pajamas" Beval explained to him.
"Hmm, I should have some clean clothes for you all to wear. I also have a guest room that Danny sleeps in when he comes to visit often. If it's okay with Danny, you all can sleep in there."
"Oh no, it's no problem at all" Danny shook his head and waved his hands.
"Come, come on in, let me give you some towels, wash cloths and toothbrushes. Once you all are done washing up, the clothes will be waiting for you on the bed. Girls will take a shower first, boys second" Noah explained as he directed us into his home.
As I walked in, I realized that the place was small. There were only two bedrooms and one bathroom. There was no upstairs, but a downstairs that lead to a basement.
"I will be back. Me and Shimizu will have to find a place to bury Katie's older sister" Danny said with a sad facial expression. Noah made the same facial expression.
"Tell Katie that I am deeply sorry for her loss. It must be hard losing a sibling" he said in sympathy.
Danny nodded and turned his flashlight back on. He began going back. I was going to watch him go, until Noah shut the metal door.
"I'm gonna get you some towels and such, stay right there. Please, don't sit on any of the couches. Not to be rude, but I don't want any of them getting dirty or stained up."
"I understand" I nodded at him.
He began to make his way.
"It feels so good getting out of the freezing cold doesn't it? It's so warm down here" Robin smiled at us as she stretched.
I didn't say anything to her. I just looked away. Suddenly, a weird sensation overcame me. I began feeling dizzy.
"Yeah, it sure does, but that doesn't take away the fact that most of us now have colds and fevers!" Kimberly stated.
"G-guys?" I called out. They looked at me.
I swayed from side to side, finding something that I could hold on to.
I didn't know what was wrong with me. I started feeling even hotter, dizzier, and disoriented.
I collapsed on to the floor.
"Gaia?!" Robin shouted as she and Beval, along with Kimberly and Mohammed ran over to me. Beval placed the back of his hand on my forehead.
"She's burning up! Find Noah and ask him for medicine for a fever. Hurry!" he shouted at Kimberly and Mohammed.
They nodded and quickly ran away to go find him, shouting Noah's name.
"Robin....Beval" I mumbled.
Everything was so blurry; I couldn't think straight. I couldn't see clearly. I felt so weak.
