Rabid (😨-🔪-💔)
(Story details:
Hazel was bitten by a rabid animal a little while back.. now, she has the rabies disease and its taking a big toll on her family's lives, as well as her own. This is told from Cuphead's POV.)
Things had been so hectic ever since Hazel got rabies. She has been so scared of being near us because of it.. any moment, once ever one, or if we are "lucky", two days, she could start foaming at the mouth and go nuts. I didn't hold any anger back on that damn animal that bit her and did this to her.. its lucky it even got away alive. I doubt it wouldn't have lived long though, as I called animal control about the bite, the animal's looks, and the incident location. They probably euthanized it by this point, cause it's impossible for a rabid animal to run far enough before animal control catches it after a call. And to be honest, I wouldn't give a sh*t if it did die, it deserved it for what it did! No one, human or animal, big or small can hurt my family and get away with it alive!
At 7:34 PM, Me and Bekkah were sitting on the cough watching some TV, and Hazel was getting ready for bed. Mugman likes to help Hazel get her bed set, as she moves around in her sleep a lot and the blankets are all over the place by morning. However, we started to hear some commotion going on upstairs where Hazel's room is. Like.. the sound of someone in distress. I was about to sit up and run upstairs when the door was slammed open, and we saw Mugman carrying Hazel in both arms. "GUYS, ITS HAPPENING AGAIN, GET A TOWEL!!" He hollered, and Bekkah gasped fear before she jumped off the couch and turned into a wolf to run faster to the bathroom, where we keep the towels at. My face went pale as Mugs ran down the stairs, and I was able to see Hazel, indeed, foaming at the mouth and breathing short, rough heaves as she got weaker. "H-here, put her on the couch..!" I exclaimed, taking Hazel from Mugs and placing her onto the couch. We had to be careful with this. In less than a minute, Hazel could loose control, like a real, rabid animal.
Bekkah soon returned with the towel. We use the towel to hold her down firmly to prevent ourselves from getting bitten and getting rabies ourselves; especially Bekkah. She can end up suffering the same, exact thing Hazel is if she caught it. After Hazel's rabies attack calms down, we use the towel to clean her up. Bekkah turned back into a human again and handed me the towel. For now, we let Hazel have some space to breathe and prepare herself, rubbing her back to comfort her before it happened. She was clearly in anguish, leaning forward and holding her belly, coughing up multiple splatters of that all-familiar white foam as she sputtered out inaudible words of pain as her voice was cutting off from the whole ordeal. We could only make out certain words. Like "I don't want this.." or "It hurts.." and even "Stay back, I-I don't want to hurt you..". It hurts us more to see her like this..
Before we knew it, Hazel let out a strained gasp and slammed her hands onto her lap, starting to quiver and growl. We knew what was happening... she was about to loose it. I opened the towel and positioned it in an open position so I could quickly throw it forward to hold her down once she morphed, and the others backed up a bit, until I could get her held down. Its important to keep her immobile, because she will attack us if we don't, and we need to let the rabies run its course through this "attack". So long as her infected teeth doesn't make contact with us, we will be safe from the disease. Scratching wont get us infected too, just her bite, and being able to get us rabid ourselves when the foam gets into our system. Suddenly, Hazel seemed to throw herself back a bit before she morphed into a wolf with a loud snarl as she zipped her head back and forth looking at us, seeing us as an instant threat. I quickly threw the towel on her to catch her off guard before placing both my hands on her, making her lay on her side so she couldn't try to lift herself up on her paws and get away easier.
Like any animal that feels threatened, she instantly started letting out growls, barks and howls, desperately struggling under my hands, biting and scratching toward us all in a way of defending herself and trying to get out, at the same time as her aggression was making us look like chew toys. It tore at my heart having to hold my own daughter down like this in such a way, but I knew it wasn't her fault. She would never do this to us, not on purpose. Not ever. Mugman and Bekkah couldn't do much to help, other than stay by the couch as the whole thing went down, being prepared to grab Hazel, pull me away, or provide more power in holding her down if things got way out of my control. Hazel continued howling and thrashing around, mind set on nothing more than tearing the towel apart, or even ME, to get free. I could barely keep myself from crying at this wretched sight, as tears trickled down my cheek onto the towel every few seconds. I didn't want to do this, but I had to. It was for Hazel's own good, and to protect ourselves. As all this was running through my mind, I felt a burning sensation on my wrist and Bekkah gasped. "CUP, WATCH IT!" I looked down and exclaimed to see Hazel digging her claws into my hand while trying to reach her head to it and add more damage through a bite, barking angrily.
Before she could do anything more, I yanked my left hand away, and saw she left four thin scratch marks on my wrist.. she got me good, as blood was instantly dripping down my arm. Luckily, this was just a minor wound and it would heal on its own; no hospital care like stitches would be needed. If she had been more violent with the scratching and didn't try to bite me, rather keep up the scratching, it very well could have been very different. She didn't bite me, thank god for that, but damn did it hurt! I violently shook my scratched hand up and down and hissed at the pain, before I put it on her again after the sensation died down enough for me to distract myself from it. However, since my hand now has an open wound, I can NOT let that foam get on me! If I do, and I somehow get it in that wound, I can say farewell to not having rabies. I kept firm grip on her, and my body lost tension as her thrashing seemed to slow, and her growls, howls, barks and yelps ceased. Soon, she was completely still, other than her chest visibly rising and falling in swift pants and whines. It was over.
I lifted my hands, and lifted the towel to wrap her up in it, grabbing one corner to wipe her mouth clean on spit and foam, and to get the small bit of blood off her claws and paw. I heard her whisper with a broken, cracking, and weak voice. "D-dad..?" I looked down and exhaled sharply, both in relief, but also anguish. "Yes, Hazie.. its me.. its over now, don't worry.. lets get you to bed..." I said softly, petting her head gently and kissing her head as I walked up the stairs while Bekkah went back to the bathroom to get some bandages for my wrist for when I returned. Once in her room, I saw some spots of the foam on the carpet, but we could deal with that later. Right now, we all needed to recover. Especially Hazel. I gently placed her on her bed, and put the covers over her. She was already passed out from exhaustion when I looked at her again. Must've fallen asleep on the way up. Thankfully she will be all better by morning.
I walked downstairs again, and leaned against the wall with my right hand on my face. I hate this.. I hate seeing Hazel suffer... no.... I loath it, despise it.. wish it would just stop. While I was reflecting on what happened, Bekkah put a hand on my shoulder and startled me, as I was zoning out and didn't notice her. "Her Cup, lets get you patched up." She said softly, showing me the bandages, and some peroxide to prevent infection. I put my injured hand out to her and she began to carefully drip the peroxide onto the scratches, making me flinch from the stinging pain, before she wrapped the wound tightly with the bandages, but being careful not to make it too tight that the wound may get worse, or even hurt me in the process. Once my wrist was bandaged up and on the road to healing, me, Mugs and Bekkah all headed to bed as well. Though I know, even though it ended, it will happen again... and again... and again. Most likely to happen again starting tomorrow.. as usual.
