He and Cody are in a battle, when in a rage against the enemy, when Cody tries to calm him, he ends up thinking he's being attacked, using his sword to slash him.

It causes him to get a gash over his eyes.

After that, Cody could no longer see. He wore bandages over his eyes to his the scars, of which the weapon that caused them permanently blinded him.

Joe struggles to see his brother cope with this and tries to help him as much as he can.
