Memory

In that moment nothing seemed to matter; everyone and everything else was a blur in your eyes. Tears fell from your widened eyes and stained your cheeks. You didn't care who saw you. It was really him. It was Alfred. You stood adjacent to him and studied his features. Alfred's eyes were still bright but there were light bags beneath him and upon his face was a small smile. He was much skinnier than you had remembered but you didn't care because it was him.

"_____? Love?" You heard Arthur say from the phone but you could barely speak. Concern was strung through his strong accented voice.

"_____! What's wrong?!" Erza exclaimed, turning around to you. She looked you in the eyes and held your hand. "What happened?!" Even though you had just met her, Erzsebet seemed like a great friend. She was strong, and caring, and genuinely cared about you.

Allen and Alfred didn't know what to say. What could they say? They both barely knew you and you were silently crying.

You let the tears fall and the wind blow as you continued to stare at him. You were at a loss for words but somehow you managed to say the very name you vowed never to say again. "...Alfred." He was gone. You remember leaving him with a note and a kiss weeks ago. The one you loved the most, would sacrafice your life for was right in front of you. The love of your life.

What happened next shattered your already cracked heart into pieces. "Hi...? How do you know my name?" It was just like last time. His memory was hazy and he didn't recall everything you had been through.

There was only one thing you could think of doing, you had been doing it for a while. You furiously wiped your eyes and faked a smile. "Oh sorry. Erza told me about you.." You could hear your voice cracking and just wanted to leave. "I hate to leave like this but something's come up. I have to go. I-I'm sorry...!" You quickly turned away and ran. You ran away from everything. You forgot that Arthur was still on the phone and by the time you put it back up to your ear his volume was loud.

"_____!? Love?! Are you still there?!" The Brit yelled from the other line.

You sniffled and wiped some more stray tears that kept falling without your permission. "Y-yeah. I'm still here..."

"...you saw him." He gasped quietly under his breath.

"Yeah...He didn't know me. He didn't recognize me." Even as you spoke, more tears continued to stream down your cheeks. Your voice was just above a whisper, as if the words you were speaking were forbidden. "A-Arthur... I can't go through this again... I-I just can't..."

You heard him sigh. "..._____. I... I'm sorry. It was the same way for me too. He didn't remember me but I convinced him. You... You'll have to do the same." You could tell Arthur was disappointed; he really wanted Alfred to recognize you so you both could be happy. You deserved that much after all, right?

"No... I'm sorry I can't. It's obvious that what we..." You stopped and changed your choice of words. "What I had with him wouldn't work. Arthur this is the second time. And I just... I can't do it again. I just got him back then he was pulled, yanked away from me!" Now you were sobbing. The stray tears fell as you walked and you did nothing to stop them. It was a lost effort. "I can't have that happen again. He seems... He seems happy. Alfred seems happy right now. Why would I ruin it?"

You finished your speech, your t shirt and cheeks stained with your wet and salty tears. "Goodbye Arthur." You said quietly, leaving no time for his answer, and hung up.

If he didn't remember you, then why remind him? It'll only just mean pain for the both of you. And you couldn't take any more pain. After it happened, you went away, shut yourself out from the world. You hid your feelings and your heart and boxed everything up tight. Never did you want to feel that way again. You continued to walk across campus, this time you stared at the ground, arms crossed over your chest. You had stopped crying, but every time you thought about the past, the dam broke. You found a nice spot to sit under a small tree. The more you looked at the tree, the more you noticed. It was a willow. Then the memory flooded your mind.

...

"Hey Doughnut! Look! Look at me!" Alfred called from the old, grey willow tree that hung above his lawn. You were over his house. You had watched a movie earlier that day; it was a scary one. Alfred had insisted, even though they scared the living daylights out of him. He was scared and you hated to admit that you sort of were too.

"Alfie! Get down! You're going to get really hurt!" You were concerned. Of course you were. You loved the blue-eyed-bushy-tailed idiot. He was climbing a tree.

Alfred smiled at you as he swung from a branch. He was upside down and his blonde hair fell in his face. Unsurprisingly especially to you, his cowlick stayed right side up. "Don't worry _____! I can't get hurt! I'm the hero and the hero never gets hurt!"

You shook your head and watched him as he climbed and swung, at one time he sang a couple songs from Tarzan. When he finally came down he looked you in the eyes and smiled brightly. "I love you. You know that?"

You giggled, blushing intensely. "Of course I do silly. And I love you too."

"Gosh if we get any sweeter, we'll give both ourselves diabetes!" He laughed, grinning widely, his eyes shining bright. You laughed along with him, keeping the moment close. You never knew that you would lose him.

...

There was thunder. It was loud. Then the rain started to fall. You looked up at it.

Really? Of course. It has to be cliché

The cold rain mixed with your hot tears as you cried silently. You thought about the memory and how as you thought about it, everything seemed grey except the bright colors that you remembered to be Alfred. Even as you thought of that name and said in over and over in your head, he didn't remember you. And he wasn't yours like he once was.

And he never would be again.

...
