...
After the phone call, you felt better. Well, as better as you possibly could. With a curt nod and a few hugs followed by an apology, you quietly left Allen and Oliver. Of course, they had both offered to walk you back to your dorm but you declined. You needed to be alone, at least until you would be bombarded with questions by Erza. Sometimes her nosiness was unbearable.
The walk back was as it always had been, this time the rain had died down to a slight drizzle. You found the sound of the light rain comforting and the time to yourself enjoyable. You took the same route you always did, and walked at the same pace. Nothing else had changed which confused you since you never once thought he would be standing there in your path.
Alfred had a puzzling look upon his features and it was evident that he had been in the rain for awhile. His bright blue eyes were what stood out to you the most. They had always been so beautiful. Now they were simply a painful reminder of what once was.
You were tired, you just wanted to go to bed, and you really didn't want to talk or even see him. Not after the embarrassing situation he "met" you in. You tried to simply walk right past him. It was almost a successful attempt at antisocial avoidance.
"_____, right?" He called out to you, causing you to spin around in place. "Yeah! Hey! We never officially met!" Alfred smiled widely, extending his hand out to you. It took everything just to keep your tears at bay. "I'm Alfred Jones! It's nice to meet you!"
You looked down at your feet, your shoes were wet and all you could think about was how many times you had "met" him before and how every time it ended horribly. "Yeah... Right.." You wanted to shake his hand but you couldn't. You wanted to touch him, to hug him and kiss him and tell him who you were and how much he meant to you but you kept your stance. You were his doughnut, but he would never know that.
"Hey, are you okay dudette? You were really upset earlier." You could see the concern in his eyes.
So you did what came "naturally". You faked a smile and gave a little laugh. That fooled anyone. "Yeah.. I'm okay. Thanks though."
But something happened that confused you. His mouth pressed into a flat line. "You can cut that shit out you know."
Your artificial smile fell and was replaced with real shock and confusion. "What..?"
He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest."I'm not dumb. I can tell when someone's faking. Now are you gonna tell me what's wrong?"
This time you were utterly taken aback by his reaction. You had never seen this side of Alfred. "Um..." But still, you never knew that was the one thing you wanted to hear for so long; for someone to realize your pain. "Yeah... Well... You're right. I'm not okay. I lost someone very special to me and he doesn't remember who I am." You didn't know what brought you to tell him, but you did. The words just fell out of your mouth.
"Oh... I'm sorry. That's horrible." Alfred's once stern face softened into a concerning look. "I couldn't even imagine that."
"Yeah. It's not the first time. So I've decided to give up, but it's hard. It's really difficult..."
"I know how you feel. I lost someone too." Alfred shrugged sadly.
"Really?" A spark of hope. Maybe he knows who I am? Could it be possible?
"Yep. Here," He reached into the back pocket of his jeans and pulled out something you knew all too well. He handed it to you and you studied your handwriting, twirling the (f/c) ribbon on your finger. "This was with my when I woke up." He sighed loudly and ran a hand through his hair. "I've been trying to find her, this 'doughnut'."
Once again you felt tears at the corners of you eyes. You refused to let them fall. You were stronger than that. Not knowing what to say, you stayed silent.
"I wish I could find her and ask her everything, who she is, who we were..." He sounded so sad. Like he has truly lost a part of his happiness.
"She's still in love with you." You blurted, realizing what you said. Alfred raised a brow. "I-I mean... That's my guess.. I can tell by how she speaks of you."
"Wow! You can tell all that?!" Alfred's eyes lit up like Christmas lights. "Hey! I have an idea! You're so good at these things so you should help me find her!"
You looked into his eyes and saw excitement and desperation swirling around in his irises. You couldn't say no, and you couldn't ignore the irony. So you nodded. "Ok... I'll help you."
"Yes! Thank you!!!" He hugged you tightly. You took in his scent and thought of when it always used to be that way; just you and him.
