The Yawning Grave          𓃦          The Bear

Chicago, July 2022.

ROMY SANTOS APARTMENT:

Romy sits outside on the balcony. The sun just started to rise and the city woke up. The cars are loud below, so are the people. On the contrast, Romy is quiet. She fiddles with the cigarette in her fingers but doesn't light it. Her cat sleeps by her feet.

The phone remains on her exposed knee but she doesn't dare to pick it up just yet. She allows DJO's Mortal Projections play on the computer placed upon the small table outside. She sips on the cold coffee.

Romy stills for a moment before dropping the cigarette on the table and opening her phone. She dials the number from the small teared up napkin. The phone gets pressed to her ear and she chews on her lower lip.

There's a blip on the other side of the line. CASSANDRA DUNLAP doesn't answer the phone. Romy decides whatever she should leave a voice note or not. She decides on the first.

ROMY:

Hi there. (a pause) It's – uhm – it's Romy Santos. I don't really know if you remember me or not but we spent that one Christmas together.

Mortal Projections end and Personal Lies begin. Romy's nails dig in the skin of her knee as a nervous tick.

ROMY:

's probably the last thing you wanted to remember; I think. But – uhm – I . . . (a pause) I don't really know why I called. I mean – I do! I do remember why I called.

A loud beep of a car below and loud curses of the people.

ROMY:

(a pause and a sigh) I didn't know. About Mikey. Michael, I mean. I don't . . . I don't know if he'd want me to call him that (a nervous chuckle)

Romy shifts in her seat. The old plastic cracks underneath and her cat wakes to move away from the noise.

ROMY:

I'm really sorry, Cassandra. I don't think there are words to express just how sorry I feel. Uhm – I know we haven't talked in a long time and I sort off just disappeared off the face of the Earth and all that but . . . I saw Cristopher the other day and he gave me your number. I just . . . (a pause again) I just hope you're okay. I mean – as much as you can be okay.

Romy sighs and looks over the balcony and to the sunrise above the city. She thinks about saying the words or not.

ROMY:

I'd love to see you one day again. Uhm – obviously we have nothing in common. Not at this point, really. I mean! (she stops and curses herself) I didn't mean it in that way, I just (a long and loud sigh)

Romy scratches just above her eyebrow and closes her eyes. She feels embarrassment and anxiety creeping in her chest. She runs her hand across her chest to calm herself.

ROMY:

I'm sorry. I'm not really good with emotions and stuff. Things like this scare me. It's why I couldn't sleep tonight 'cause I just kept thinking if I should call you or not. But I decided to do it either way 'cause . . . I just wanted to say my condolences. But I did mean it – that I'd love to see you one day. You and the baby – if they're born yet, I don't know. Cristopher didn't say anything but he was in a hurry so . . .

The people down on the streets talk loudly through the morning chaos. The song changes again and her cat moves around her legs and under the chair.

ROMY:

I think this is all. I already made a fool of myself so (a nervous chuckle). Anyway, yeah! Call me. Or don't! Whatever you want. Uhm – I won't be angry either way, really. You probably don't even remember me but still . . . I wanted to give it a shot. So . . . take care. Bye.

Romy places the phone on the table in exchange for the unlit cigarette. She presses it between her lips and takes the purple lighter to lit it up. The city wakes but she wishes she was asleep for eternity.

everyone welcome my loser gf romy & her even more loser friends !!! she's a sweetheart (most of the time! sometimes actually. actually only to cassandra)

this started off as a carmy fic but then it developed in multiple ocs x characters because i fell in love with mikey and sydney sue me!!!! it will still focus mostly on romy and carmy for most of the time BUT cass, cris & boo play an important role in the story!! 

romy has a BAD case of never getting over anything!! she's very complicated within her own feelings so she will be making mistakes and doing bad things. she's done it in the past and she WILL be doing it again!!😍😍

i also tried something new with the synopsis don't know if i like it but it's here!!!
