Chapter IV
Extra note: Kate is French
________________
I raised an eyebrow at Logan disbelievingly. Normally I would believe what he said, but the man who stood in front of us now clearly wasn't paralyzed. He didn't look all that impressed to see us here either.
"I'm not a professor," the man repeated. "I can't do anything for you. Leave."
The blonde woman shot him a glare. "I can, however. Stay," she said. I recognized her accent as French.
Jack hesitated. "Who are you?"
"Kate Franz," the woman said. "This pain in the neck is Charles Xavier and the lady over there-" she nodded to a brunette girl in a silver jacket and black pants I hadn't noticed before standing in a hallway, "-is Saila Valdez."
Saila nodded to us, spinning a pencil in her hands like a baton. Her eyes flicked to Charles and then away again guiltily. Charles grumbled something I didn't catch, earning himself another glare from Kate.
"We need your help," Logan said.
I resisted the urge to slap my forehead and gently pushed Logan away. "That can wait for a moment. I am Gallia Ishla, this is Logan Howlett and Jack Flycker."
Logan sighed. "Now we need your help."
Charles scowled. "I seem to recall us coming to you for help and refusing. Why should we help you?"
"Because the reason we're here is to stop the end of mutants everywhere," Logan growled.
Jack clapped his hands, but instead of a slapping sound, a loud drumbeat echoed through the room. Everyone instantly turned toward him.
Logan shot me an irritated look. "I thought you said he didn't know about his powers yet."
"I did say that," I agreed. "Nobody said it was the truth."
Jack looked at Charles defiantly, ignoring Logan's even more irritated glare. "You haven't listened to any of our reasons. Right now, we are going to sit somewhere and you are going to listen to everything we have to say before you make a decision."
I looked at Jack in surprise. I don't think I've ever heard him tell someone what was going to happen without giving them an option. He was persuasive in other ways, but what he said now seemed to be doing quite a good job.
Charles looked taken aback for a moment, then thoughtful. "Fine. I'll listen."
Kate let out a long breath like she had expected something bad to happen. "We'll use the study," she said.
Kate led us across the huge entryway to a heavy, dark wood door. Charles, Logan, Jack, and I all followed her. I glanced back to see if Saila was coming. She acknowledged my look with a nod and vanished in a flash of silver lightning and sparks. I blinked. She must be a mutant too.
"Excuse the mess," Kate said, giving Charles a dark look as she opened the door. "But someone hasn't bothered to clean it recently."
Charles just rolled his eyes. The room beyond the door was dimly lit, but when Kate opened the curtains, light flooded the room. The desk was cluttered, and several papers were hanging precariously over the edge. The far wall was covered in bookshelves. Underneath the window was a long couch with a glass coffee table in front of it.
Jack, Logan, and I sat down on the couch while Charles sat down behind the desk. Kate sat cross-legged on the floor. Everyone, including myself, looked at Logan.
Logan leaned forward, staring intently at Charles. He told Charles everything he'd told us, about coming from the future, and everything about the future that needed to be changed.
When Logan finished speaking it was silent for several minutes. Kate closed her eyes for a moment and Logan flinched slightly but said nothing. Kate opened her eyes a moment later and looked at Charles, her expression unreadable.
Charles studied Logan's face. "And how do I know you aren't lying?"
Kate scowled and said something in French that I didn't understand.
"If you don't believe me then look in my head and see for yourself," Logan growled. "I'm no liar."
Charles shook his head. "I can't."
Logan blinked and stared at him. "Bull."
Charles glared. "Really, I can't."
"And he's not going to tell you why." The unfamiliar and oddly accented voice made everyone turn to the door. Luck leaned against the doorframe. Her expression was serious. Charles, Kate, and Logan looked shocked.
"Speak your mind, Luck," Kate said softly. "You know we'll listen."
Luck nodded respectfully to Kate, then turned her green gaze to us. "Saila and Hank created the medication that allows him to walk," she said, her voice almost sounded wolfish, but I discarded the idea immediately. "The same medication blocks his telepathy. He's as powerless as any other human on Earth." She looked at Charles disapprovingly. "And even I can't convince him to stop."
Charles didn't meet her gaze. "You didn't come here to say only that."
"No," Luck agreed. "I speak to you as a friend as well as some much-needed wisdom. Wolverine speaks the truth, and you should listen to what he has told you. I will help him, with or without your permission."
The room fell silent once again. At last, Charles sighed. "Where do we start? We don't have enough mutants to break Erik out of the Pentagon."
Logan smirked. "I know a guy."
